NFL Blackout Watch '12

One of the next victims could be the San Diego Chargers, as their home opener versus the Tennessee Titans could be blacked-out if they don't sell out by 1:25pm local time this afternoon. In Los Angeles, KCBS indicated on their web site that if the Chargers games doesn't sell out, more than likely that they'll go with the Jets-Steelers game instead. The Chargers were not one of the teams that took advantage of the NFL's revised blackout rule, sticking with the old rule.

One of the teams that has had attendance issues in recent years (and a target for relocation), Jacksonville Jaguars, have sold out their entire home schedule for the season, thanks more to new ownership infusing life into that franchise.

Any word on Miami's home opener against Oakland? What would WFOR-TV (CBS) channel 4 of Miami show in its place if that happens?

WFOR has the game on their schedule, as per TitanTV. I also checked the tickets page on the Dolphins' web site, and couldn't find any available tickets, so it's very certain that South Florida will see Raiders-Dolphins on CBS.

I'm not sure if they would be allowed to do that...does the NFL dictate that no other game can be shown in its place (with the rationale being "airing another game would keep fans away from attending the local game?")

I wonder how much money an affiliate loses out on by showing that (or filler programming like tennis, soccer etc) instead of an NFL game WRT local spots. I'm sure advertisers are lined up for NFL games while they sit on the sideline when something else plays.

SOmetimes they'd lose enough that it makes sense for affiliates to buy (or promise to buy) the rest of the tickets. KMSP (Fox-Twin Cities) has done that, as recently as last year. Granted, it the example cited below, it was only 400 tickets unlike the Chargers' game.

a station probably decides its not worth it to buy remaining tickets when it has to take a huge loss buying them, even at just a small loss it still gives them eyeballs to see the local news promos
 
People are really catching onto the fact that football is a game better suited for TV. There was an article about this in Sports Illustrated in the last week or two. I'm a huge football fan but I have no interest in ever going to a game live. The game is much easier to follow and more enjoyable on TV.
 
ansky that's what I tell everyone when they ask why I don't want to go to an NFL game. What so I can see maybe 1/3 of the game if I'm lucky and not in no man's land. The game on my 60 inch at home with surround sound will do just fine.

I tend to agree with that. Ever been to a NFL game? The timeouts for the TV commercials completely destroy the flow of the game, and seem to drag on forever. Same thing with college games that are televised.

Baseball is relatively unaffected by TV as the innings changes provide a natural place for commercials.

I'm pretty sure they can't. If a home game is blacked out, I don't think the primary market can air a competing game. Secondary markets, on the other hand, are sometimes required to show a team's away games but not the home games. So, some of them can substitute another game if the home team doesn't sell out. That's what's probably going on in Los Angeles with the Chargers game.

I believe it was four. In addition to Buffalo and the Chargers, Indianapolis and Cleveland stuck with the old rule.

I seem to think Cincinnati did too. It's par for the course for Mike Brown. Most of their games were blacked out last year because the fans finally got fed up with the poor management that's resulted in years of crappy teams.
