Nick Cannon

Good jock for CHR or DHA style rock... doesn't really fit formatically with RXP. It seems silly that he's on when you have talent like Paul Cavalconte on the sidelines. But really, that whole station is just not quite "there". When will they wake up and realize the same people who want to hear the new Phoenix or Pete Yorn don'twant to hear AC/DC, Guns and fricken Roses or Van Halen. If you play Guns n Roses, you may as well play Poison too. A station like RXP should be a refuge from that worn out music you can hear on DHA, Q-same 200 songs-104 or any other garden variety "titties and beer" rock station.

And also, STOP TALKING OVER THE MUSIC! What is this, Z-100?? You don't have to hit the post like CBS-FM on a supposed AAA... that goes for Cannon and all of them. Back to Cannon, he's just a little too "smart ass" for the format they are trying to execute. I'm not saying he's a bad jock at all, in fact, he would be great at any active rocker, hot AC or CHR.

Sorry the post was all over the place... RXP is like my Niagra Falls: "Slowly I turn......."

It could be a great radio station if they would only decide what it is they really want to be, and then focus on it.

Ummm....the original poster was referring to Nick Cannon, the new morning man who debuted on Tues. 1/19/10 at WXRK-FM-92.3 New York "923 NOW", a rhythmic leaning CHR station.

WNTIRadio, you're (probably) referring to Nik Carter, afternoon man on WRXP-FM-101.9 New York "New York's Rock Experience". Coincidentally, Nik worked on the 92.3 FM NYC frequency in its last incarnation of "K-Rock, New York's Rock Station", just before changing formats to its current CHR model.

Having said that, I can see the reasoning in your analysis of Nik & 'RXP!

Couldn't bare much of it, he seemed very lost, and really didn't fit the station sound by any means... but I'm assuming not knowing what radio station you are on, can't help?

See anything wrong from his tweets from this morning?:

I did see a reference (I think on Nick's Blog Page) to "Power 92.3 Now" & thought "that's weird", but maybe a one-time slip up by Nick or whoever runs his blog/Twitter/Facebook. But as it turns out, same mistake in several spots...something he better get corrected - soon!

nick sounds like a bad night show right now he needs a couple radio pros to co host with him and one hell of a producer to even have a shot at lasting in NY radio. His show has not had much if any content yet so maybe they are just going to make it a music show with a touch of nick

Eventually he'll be doing the show from Las Vegas in October when "America's Got Talent" starts up again. And he'll probably be doing some shows from L.A. as well. If he does these shows "live" they would be from 3-7am local (Pacific) time. I just don't know...is some voicetracking in Nick's future? Or just minimal voice "drop-ins"?

Which would reinforce your above points:

1. since he'll probably have little guidance with all the travel/odd hours, they'll probably keep his spoken parts to a minimum. Although the executive producer of the show, Jake Ray, who's worked at Hot 97 New York & at morning shows in Atlanta, Houston & Seattle, may provide hope for Nick if he travels with him.
2. this seems to be the way CBS Radio runs its CHR stations anyway: more music, less talk, even in morning drive. Although I haven't listened to Carson Daly's morning show on KAMP "97.1 Amp Radio" L.A. yet, but from what I've read it follows that same script. I could see where Carson would be given a little more leeway being as he's a seasoned radio professional who's worked previously in the L.A. market.

Don't want to jump to too many conclusions yet...one of the articles on Nick's blog mentions he'll be looking for a co-host, who may wind up carrying the load on the NYC end if Nick's away a lot & unable to do more than cameo appearances on the show. We'll see...

Yepp... my bad, thought it was about Nik Carter... but Nick Cannon was an insanely stupid idea. He can't even get through a sentence on America's Got Talent, don't want to hear him in the morning. Give some jock who's worked his (or her) ass off at a mid-market level a shot at the big time instead of another "celebrity". I give it until May, slightly longer than David Lee Roth. It's amazing the same company that was so smart and radio savvy with bringing CBS-FM back and hiring Jim Douglas on 102.7 can be so lame brained with this decision.

He didn't sound as bad as I thought he would...but then again, who knows if this will last....

The "black talk" seems so old and out of fashion these days. He sounds like rapper being interviewed on MTV in 2002 or something. The show didn't sound hip at all and that's bad news for CBS.

so if...say ethnic people are not to sound...ethnic on air...what is fashionable these days?

There's sounding "ethnic" with say, an accent. And then there is sounding illiterate, which crosses all ethnic boundaries. Cannon fits the latter category. It's not an accent, it's a speech impediment and inability to articulate. Whether he is white, black, asian, eskimo or martian, this is about being able to use the language properly ON the RADIO! There used to be a time when you had to be able to speak and communicate effectively to be on the radio or TV.

Gone are those days it seems...

I think "black talk" was the wrong term to use. What I meant was hiphop-slang. I don't think it's fashionable these days. The DJs on urban stations hardly talk like that anymore. Do they?

It was fun listening to Howard Stern rip on Cannon this past Thursday.

"He's hired a talent coach...it's funny that the host of 'America's Got Talent' needs a talent coach. A talent coach! What is that?" ~ Stern

Only Wannabee's D J's ( DJ's whom know nothing about Urban music and want to sound cool, but end up sounding stupid ).

I listened to Nick Cannon, and I can't stay on no longer than 10 seconds. Why are guys like Cannon behind the mic, but pros like Diane Prior are getting the pink slip?
