No Joke. Star 101.5 Flipping Today Too

What baffles me is how Seattle-Tacoma doesn't have at least 1 mainstream current Hip/Hop & R&B outlet? Omaha freaking Nebraska has had one for a long time. How is there not the revenue there to support it in Seattle?!?!

The amount of RFI on AM has increased massively in the past 20 years. KNWN-AM probably isn't as listenable as you think, especially in places like Everett. Plus the fact that engine noise is another factor and some cars (EVs, but even some regular ICE vehicles) have NO AM in them...makes me wonder why 101.5 didn't just go to KNWN.
Also: Ask the Average Joe, age 35 (born in 1989)...do they even know what AM radio is? Or if they do, they probably think it's where all the right-wing talkers are. (Somewhat right, i.e. KTTH, KVI)

I listened to KNWN crystal clear from Seattle up through Bellingham two days ago. Reception was excellent and 1000 was easily listenable (without excess static). It’s not FM, and listeners may elect not to listen if they don’t realize where KNWN is located on the dial, but I don’t really see reception as being a massive problem.

A simulcast on 101.5 would be a nice perk to have. But I’m not sure it would make a huge difference. Maybe they see 97.7 as being good enough for their purpose (and would prefer to put 101.5 to another use).

Likewise, KCBS is immensely popular in San Francisco. How much of the population listens on FM 106.9?

When I’m in the Bay Area, I usually listen to KCBS on 740. Of course, 106.9 sounds great in San Francisco, but many of the outlying areas get a strong and reliable signal from 740. San Francisco is a rare area where AM does work better, even if the popularity of AM is bottoming out.

KMPS-AM 1300 launched nearly 50 years ago, with "Modern Country" competing with the existing KAYO-AM 1150, the station that featured talent such as "B. Buck Ritchey, "Bashful" Bobby Wooten, etc. It took only a few years to force KAYO to try other formats. The addition of a separate FM Country format on 94.1 didn't hurt. And KMPS-FM lasted for many many years. But that was then. In today's world, flipping formats is like flipping burgers.

And when a station with a 1 share flips format, the 1% comes out of the woodwork. The other 99% don't even know or care of the flip.

Car agency guy is right. Should have put Hank on 97.7, and News on 101.5. It was two years ago that I speculated that the changes at Star would spell doom. Lotus really screwed up when they let Kent Phillips walk. Lotus consultant didn't know the Seattle market from a whole in the wall and didn't put much faith, if any into research? Morning team at first cracked the mike every song and break with horrible results.
Music was unfocused and imaging was the worst I've ever heard!
No offense to Julian, but he had no AC background. I'm sure he'll do fine in a younger demo of music. There's no way he could compare to Kent in the afternoon.
Kent and Alan in mornings built the legacy of KPLZ. Once a heritage station, it's sad how fast Lotus took it to the bottom. Now this????
Should put News Radio on 101.5 and call Hank an April Fools joke before it's to late! No way will this market support 3 or 4 country stations, that's if you count the Everett station. WHAT A JOKE!

When it comes to KPNW, Bill is spot on. 99% have never heard of the station. (Bill is by far along with David, Kelly and Little Boy Blue the real radio brain trust on this website) Was there ever a full marketing press for KPNW.
I hear talk on here about tech bro's? Other than those with girl friends, I doubt they even know radio exists.
BTW, where's Kelly Alford when we need his wisdom?

Funny thing, when I typed in 101.5 Hank FM in my search engine, to check out the website, instead of the local station website, I got a bunch of results for 101.5 Hank FM in Dayton, Ohio. Woops.

Probably true, and that is part of the problem with the AAA KPNW. If you're going to launch a new format, and part of your target is those who either are a) older demos who already drifted to Spotify and Pandora for their AAA fix after radio dumped it, or b) younger demos who don't "tune around on the FM band to see what's new", you're going to have to do something like advertise.

With a format like Country, where it's a highly popular format, and there still are big stars with a lot of star power, perhaps it's a different matter.
