No Kudos Airtime to Metrocenter/South Jackson?

I think I know the answer to this question, but has anyone noticed that the radio stations gives little to no time to kudos or airtime to anything GOOD happening in Downtown, South Jackson, or at Metrocenter Mall? The focus of todays radio seems to be broadcasting live, kudos, or alot of airtime to places like North Jackson, "the crime free" Madison and Flowood, why nothing in South Jackson, Downtown or Metrocenter Mall? Burlington Coat Factory should have recieved high kudos for opening at Metrocenter Mall but instead all that they received was Brock of Mix 987 not speaking so highly of it? Theres so much props to Northpark Mall that it sickens me. I know the focus of today's business is to leave inner city and move toward the suburbs, but lets not forget our capitol is Jackson, the market they serve is Jackson, not Madison, Flowood, Clinton or Pearl. It seems as though even the radio stations are exploiting not only the Metrocenter area but Jackson in general. It seems as though many of us forget the treasures Metrocenter Mall, THE shopping mall of our past. When I go to the mall, I go to the same one I've gone to since I was a kid, the Metrocenter Mall. Metrocenter is on a rebound, why not give it props?

Metrocenter is on a rebound

You are kidding right? I went to Jackson on vacation last summer. Mero hasnt changed from what it was in 97. Step out of your car and get mugged. Thats what most people think of downtown and Metrocenter. Since it has happened so many times. On another note Northpark is not all that either. It has no CD store. What good is a mall with no CD store?

I live in Baton Rouge the same thing was said about Cortana mall. I actually shopped there for christmas this year. Nothing had changed. People yelling, cursing, threating..one lady even hit a police car and threated to jump the cop...he just drove off.

Get used to the malls not having record stores......they're becoming a thing of the past.....sad but true. You think it's all about Northpark? Wait til Renaissance opens in the Spring of 08 in Ridgeland. People always gravitate to the new, shiny, and trendy places.....nothing personal towards Metrocenter. May they all thrive in the coming year. Happy New Years to you all

Radio stations in Jackson go where the demo is. AEs sell remotes based on the station audience and what will most benefit their client. Some radio stations don't have many listeners in the Metrocenter area. That's why they never talk about Metrocenter. It all comes down to the demo and where advertisers want to spend their money. Stations don't give away free advertising.

The record store recently closed at metrocenter, but is the one at Northpark closed also? I'm not surprised. I seldom buy records anymore. The only CD's I bought all year were a couple of christmas albums. Josh Groban and Manheim steamroller.
The previous post is right. People want to go where the new shopping centers are. Metrocenter killed off Jackson Mall, Northpark finished it off. Northpark killed Metrocenter, Dogwood is killing it off. Northpark is losing its Rankin County business to Dogwood. And the new Madison mall will likely kill Northpark. Remember when Mart 51 and Westland Plaza were the hot places in the 60's? Look what happend to highway 80. Just a shell of its former glory. Ive always liked Metrocenter, but I think Burlington Coat Factory is too little too late. Its kind of a sad place now. I was there this year and poor old Santa was looking a little long in the tooth, because there was very few kids getting their picture taken. There is grass growing in the parking lot where I used to park on the weekends.

For all you doubters, Metrocenter is going to get turned around, but this is not the proper forum to go into a full-length discussion on it.

I do agree with some of what mkjatobr is saying; however, it's the businesses that call upon the radio stations to do remotes. I'm sure Jack FM or Y101 would go the Burlington Coat Factory or Furniture Land if called upon to do so. I must admit that I don't know if it's quite that simple since I'm not well-versed on how remotes are set up. I did see Y101 broadcast from East Ford when the dealership was around, despite the fact that the surrounding area is overwhelmingly black, so that would disprove the theory of not paying attention to other areas of Jackson. But I'm sure Y101 wanted the cash, so they went there.

As far as where the radio stations give their attention to, you do have to look at each station's demographic. It's just like their advertising clientele: You don't hear a commercial for Aqua the Day Spa on WJMI because WJMI's audience isn't the demographic that business is going after, just like KJ's Superstore doesn't advertise on Jack or Y101 because those stations' demographics are different than that of KJ's. Race could play a part on what stations businesses advertise and who AE's call on--which is a shame if they do--but it would be a huge waste of money for a specialty business to advertise to an audience they don't want to target. Not all businesses are like Kroger or McDonald's, both which cater to a general clientele. It may seem wrong, but sometimes, an advertiser has to be discriminating in order to maximize the best value for their advertising dollar.

Metrocenter is on a rebound? Say what? Are we talking about the same crime infested South Jackson and downtown area or are you living in an alternate Jackson that I don't know about? Seriously, I don't mean to slam you but come on man/lady. How you can justify such a statement is beyond me. I don't live in Jackson but I've been there enough to know that the place is a dump. It's no wonder a lot of people are moving to the suburbs.

And with that: As someone already pointed out, the stations will talk about the area(s) where their target demo is. Like it or not a lot of citizens of Jackson are moving to the suburbs to escape the rampant drug and gang problems. North Jackson has managed to stay reletively (note that I didn't say "totally") crime and trouble free. Therefore, more people are going to go eat, shop and otherwise hang out in that area as well as the towns/cities surrounding Jackson. I don't go to Jackson at all if I can avoid it. I can do all of my shopping in Flowood or Pearl. Sometimes I'll go to the area where Northpark is but otherwise I'll steer clear of Jackson at all costs.

Agreed on the metrocenter post. Lat summer it was a total dump. It looked nothing at all like it did in 87!

Last summer when I went up there to watch the Braves play we stayed in Pearl. We shopped in Pearl. Pearl is a great town. We are going back this summer also. We also went to Northpark mall. I was bored. Nothing there. I was happy to find a beebop record store after leaving :D

Well, I'm not going to get in on any of the mall debates, but I do remember when I was still at Y-101, I used to do a lot of remotes at a car dealership near Metrocenter. There was a BP station right there at the mall where I would get ice for the cooler, etc., and I can remember that the cashier there was a really nice guy, and we got along great. I also recall that he always was armed and his 9mm was right there in plain view on his shoulder holster. I don't imagine many people messed with him. ;D

Hope all of you have a Happy New Year!

MC

If there's a problem, yo, I'll solve it;
Check out the hook while the BP revolves it...
Ice Ice Baby,
I need some Ice Ice Baby...

Hey thanks Golden Eagle for having faith in us at Metrocenter. Ya know Nina Holbrook says she has nothing more to do with Metrocenter? LOL. Anyway, yeah Metrocenter Mall is 90% leased, more spaces are open and less and less spaces are dark. Metrocenter is no longer considered a dead mall. Burlington, Belk and Sears are there to save us. You all can diss Metrocenter or Jackson in general all you want but its still the capitol of Mississippi. And when we get our revitalization finally we'll look at you guys and laugh. Keep your "crime free" Madison.

Oh and what about your "crime free" Madison/Ridgeland..... major police chase/shooting today on County Line Road North Park Mall area.. but I guess somehow thats Jackson's fault? Madison is still "crime free" huh?

Guess I dont need to give anybody here a geography lesson, huh? I was always under the impression that RIDGELAND and JACKSON were separated by County Line Road......not Madison. And yes, crime is not isolated to any one area, while another area is exempt......but I dont think anyone here on Metrocenters behalf wants to start keeping a tally. Frankly, I like shopping for antiques and you cant do that in ANY of the malls.

I hope you all plan on electing a non-criminal mayor then.

Criminal? The guy wasn't afraid to show his b---s and take a baseball bat to the dumb@ss gang members and crackheads in J-town. I say kudos to him, others should be out to follow his lead and show what leadership is about when it comes to protecting your citizens

Thanks for the kudos... Frank Melton is a very good mayor who isn't afraid of anything. Unlike those paranoid people in Madison who live behind gated communities because they're afraid of undesireables... yet did I point out how many cars and SUVs with Madison plates at Burlington Coat Factory the other day and night? Yet its the same people who once called Metrocenter the undesireable mall. And for you grits, Maybe we need to give you a geography lesson brotha. County Line Road seperates Hinds County, the city of Jackson and MADISON County, the city of Ridgeland.. am I right or no? As for Northpark or County Line Road, if you feel like fighting the traffic and possibly an accident (which could be worse then the fear of being mugged at Metrocenter) just to get to your high dollar stores you go right ahead. Which is greater? The FEAR of being mugged at Metrocenter or the car accident on County Line Road, which could actually happen? I guess you won't be mugged at Northpark ever huh?

Frank Melton is a very good mayor

:eek: ::)

Whatever! But I said I wouldn't get into a discussion about all of this. After all, this is
a radio board. There's a very good discussion board at the Jackson Free Press' website. Use that to talk about the things going on in Jackson.

Fun Factoid: The "M" in MRS Ventures stands for Melton....Frank Melton. He was once business partners with Jerry Russell, but my understanding is that Melton ran after business starting going sideways. Russell, of course, is the mastermind behind the destruction of 6 stations in Cleveland/Greenville.
