NO MORE MISTER ROGERS NEIGHBORHOOD ON TELEVISION???

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello There,
My name is Bob I live in Chicago IL.
I am a real big fan of Mister Rogers Neighborhood since the first day it was aired in 1968.
This past Labor Day, One morning, I woke up to tuned into channel 11 to watch Mister Rogers Neighborhood at 6am. Instead, there was no Mister Rogers Neighborhood; instead, Sesame Street was in its place. I said to myself what in the hell is going on here?

Tuesday morning when I got to the office, I’ve called WTTW channel 11 and they had told me that they’ve added brand new children programs and taken Mister Rogers Neighborhood off the air, due to the fact that Mister Rogers Neighborhood was considered to be old technology and WTTW channel 11 said to me that Mister Rogers Neighborhood wasn't living up to today’s standard of children programming.

Also WTTW channel 11 tpld me that that ratings were kind of low, and the show as rather boring for the children of today. WTTW said to me that he died in February of 2003, and his shows are no longer being made since after his death.

I think this is unfair of what WTTW 11 are doing with there programming, because to me Mister Rogers is NOT old technology! I think today’s modern TV shows are nothing but trash and a waste of my time. (Except for my good, buddy Kermit on Sesame Street)

I qwas wondering about what are your thoughts of what WTTW Channel 11 had said about Mister Rogers Neighborhood considered being old technology?

(1) Do you agree or disagree with WTTW 11?

(2) What are your feelings about this issue?

(3) For everyong on this board; Is this fair? or is it unfair?

What Do You Think???...

I think it's a shame they pulled Mr. Rogers off. The aim of the show is for people so young, how would they know it was boring?

Study the kids' reactions, perhaps? Talk to parents about whether it engages children's interest? It's not that hard.

It's understandably sad to see something from your childhood disappear (though an adult watching Mr. Rogers without the intent of sharing it with their kids....well, it's interesting); but time does go on and tastes do change. The show did have an extraordinary run, and shaped many a child's life in positive ways. It is to be commended for its commitment to quality and class.

Painting all "new" shows that have come along with one brush is pointless. There are many fine educational and wholesome shows airing across various channels including PBS, Nick Jr. and others.

If the ratings for the program were low, relative to the other educational programming they could fill the time with, that is a fair justification for making a change. Sesame Street is an equally worthy program, and if more people are watching it, these kinds of things will happen. It's perfectly fair--there is only so much airtime, and the fact is even with PBS, the viewership level is important.

Sad perhaps, but fair nonetheless.

It's on 5 days a week here in Cincinnati at 6am, 10am, and 1:30pm. 6am on WPTO 14.4, 10am, WPTO 14 analog and 14.2 digital, 1:30pm on WPTO14.4 Sunday at 8am I believe on WPTO 14 an 14.2.

Times change, and while Mister Rogers had his place, I say WTTW can move on if it and its members so desired. Some of the topics dealt with are timeless, but with the competition from other shows today, and the fact there are many other issues nowadays that we never talked about in the 70s and 80s such as homosexuality and the Internet, stations have to change with the times. That said, as public television stations, if the station members want the show then keep it on by all means.

You put the kid in front of the TV and if he isn't bored he watches. If not he'll start bugging you or he'll change the channel.

Can you buy Mr Rogers on DVD?

Not that it matters, but did Mr rogers even know what a computer is?
I havn't seen the show in years, but it better not be teaching kids what a typewriter is!

I don't think Mr. Rogers would cover homosexuality much, even if it was taped today and the producers were looking for ratings.
He covered all types of people, but I don't think their sexuality came into play, at least the years I watched.

Mr. Rogers was a devout Presbeterian, so I doubt it.

You meant Fred Rogers was a Christian when he was alive.
In one episode, during when he taken is film crew onto a location at a Museum of Dinasaurs. He had mentioned something that he said when while he read something in the Bible about dinasaurs at one time.

I happen to be a Presbyerian-what's that prove? Some of us are open minded and accepting of others. The one-size fits all approach doesn't always work.

Actually, PBS is continuing to feed MISTER ROGERS -- but just once a week for use on weekends. Local stations can decide to continue stripping the programs on weekdays from their own tapes. In Milwaukee, WMVS/Channel 10 continues to air it Monday-Friday at 12 noon. Too bad about Chicago.

I caught a few minutes of Mr. Rogers last weekend, on my local (Sonoma Co., Northern California) PBS station. I think KQED in S.F. dropped it after his death.

As a parent of a young one, I've checked out most of the shows on that schedule on my local station, and your assessment is so far off the mark it's not even in the same area code.

There are a number of engaging shows with positive social lessons that speak to little kids. Not all speak to their parents, but that's fine. We grit our teeth and bear it because it ultimately helps the kids.
