No Morgan (BZ)

Some people are like that.No smartphone, no computer, no TV

With the virus forcing people to work out of their homes, I'd expect to see that become the new normal once it's over. Expensive radio studios in big brick buildings are as obsolete as record stores. Don't need em.

And even in the past there were cost cutting efforts like having 7 or 8 stations in the same building.Youtube has a video with a tour of the American Radio studios in 1995--WRKO, WEEI (on AM), The Eagle 93.7 and Mix 98.5.Wow, save on real estate by putting them all in the same building...

..and now doing shows from home.
Where are the studios for K-Love 107.3 gonna be where the sale closes? Who needs studios...

We. were just having knock down drag-outs over "how dare there not be a main studio" and now, of necessity, we don't need one.

K-Love never uses local studios. That's been the case for years.

Non-coms had an exemption from the local studio rule, and then the FCC expanded that rule to all radio. So no legal requirement for local studio.

When you applied for a job in radio, the qualifications used to be a good voice. Then it became ability to do digital editing and digital music scheduling.

Now it's having a home studio. The good news is most colleges are teaching their students all of this. An entire generation of millennials are living this lifestyle now.

Moving forward, the main reason for a local studio will be to interact with advertisers and the community. Sales & promotions will keep local studios alive. But if you're local talent, you better learn about home studios, or hire a tech guy.

I'm not a radio guy but it would seem that at-home broadcasting would probably have as a prerequisite some level of tech savvy that a guy who still to this day continues to write... phoned... in... trivia... answers... down... while... on... the... air... likely doesn't possess.

Brudnoy used to seem to be something of a luddite about computers, but once he started using one on the air I thought he seemed to start relying on it to an annoying extent. You'd hear him clicking away and saying "uh huh" "mmm" and seemed to not be paying close attention to what callers were saying.

Then again, who would voluntarily retire from a job where all you really have to do is show up & talk?

@MorganWBZ
WBZ notified me today. I am on hiatus for now and will update as I get more information.

I have been assured The Morgan Show will be back. Until we are together again, be kind to yourself and one another.

That said, EMF does have local promotions offices in some of their larger markets. New York is one example -- I believe the office is in Yonkers. We'll have to see if they deem Boston worth the investment.

Btw I mentioned this on the In Memoriam thread but my friend Frank Ochieng, frequent guest of Morgan and Jordan, passed away at age 54

Someone started a Fans of Morgan White Jr page on Facebook.Lately there are posts guessing Morgan was let go by the station and had a non disclosure agreement so can't say anything. Not sure if that's true or not.Once in
awhile Morgan posts on Twitter saying "we're still waiting to hear". About half a year now.

Other posts say "face it he's gone" and wonder if he can do brokered time somewhere.

non disclosure?

of what?

that he may no longer work there?

Not a chance in Hell, if he was no longer working there he could tell you so.

IF there was a settlement of a employment related lawsuit, there are legitimate uses of non disclosure agreements (N.D.A.) and or non disparagement clauses, but he could still say he was no longer employed there, just not why.

Could he buy his own time somewhere?

Sure, but if you want to be HEARD it is to cost you some $$$ and I don't think Morgan has a few grand in his pocket to pay the first months lease fees up front, or wants to go out in this economic climate and try to hustle up sponsors.... and if he tried to hit up any of the sponsors he heard placed in his spot load while on WBZ A, and it got back to the Evil Empire, you can bet he would get a cease and desist letter.

The reality?

Stations have learned that people have accepted the fact that weekend hosts are gone, the company is saving a little money, nobody is protesting over on Cabot Road to bring back Morgan.

Welcome to the new normal.

He could do a FB live if he wanted to, if you follow the newly married Mistress Carrie on social media, not only does she have a great podcast, but her Tuesday night FB Live " Cocktails From The War Room" is very interactive via the comments she sees while discussing topics, she will answer specific people and comments in near real time.

But if you think it sux to be in radio in this climate, think of all the Pilots that have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on training and education and are probably never going to fly as an ATP again as the industry contracts... those jobs are not returning anytime soon, if ever.

Was mentioning the same thing--he could buy time elsewhere if he wanted to get on air and sell ads to pay himself back but yes iHR could be upset if he's taking ad dollars away from them.
Don't think he's done shows for awhile at restaurants (purely bars still shut down here).
No events are listed for Sept on his site.

Could be he's furloughed, getting health care benefits (maybe) but no salary or air time. Not "laid off". Again his
Twitter posts are simply "still waiting to hear".

Unfortunately, I kinda doubt it. Many people who were originally told they were "furloughed" from stations (and other businesses) months ago due to the pandemic eventually got notice a few months later that they're not coming back, once the station (or other business) realized that they can still fulfill operating at their bottom line either without the existence of those employees positions (such as eliminating the few remaining paid live local overnight announcers in radio), and/or dispersing the duties and responsibilities of an eliminated position (such as an eliminated management position) among other personnel in addition to what they were already doing (and not necessarily with an increase in pay for that additional work).

Back during the transition I really thought Morgan had little chance of staying even when he was on the air.
But I didn't know if he was the single minority broadcaster on the station. If he was, I thought that might have bought him some time, at least. What iHeart has at the station now IDK? They probably don't care.

I do miss Bradley Jays show by the way. Haven't listened to BZ after 6pm in a long long time.

Some have been calling WBZ's Bill Flaherty trying to get Morgan back on, according to the facebook group. Not sure if that will work (I doubt it will!) though listener protests back in the CBS days
brought back Brudnoy who'd been replaced by Tom Snyder, and Steve Leveille who'd been replaced by Overnight America.
Leveille returned in early 2009 and retired in 2012.
Wikipedia under WBZ;
"Overnight host Steve LeVeille retired from WBZ on June 8, 2012; after a year of rotating guest hosts that included Jennifer Brien, Morgan White Jr., Bradley Jay, and Dean Johnson, Brien was named the new host on June 25, 2013.On October 3, 2013, the station announced it was canceling the Jen Brien Show with immediate effect. Bradley Jay then took over the overnight show, renamed Jay Talking."

That was the weeknight overnight.Morgan's weekend show continued even after Jay
was cut last Jan., and he has been off since March.
Jay was the last DJ on WBCN at 104.1 in Aug of
2009

I miss Morgan, Bradley, Leveille, and the 'BZ overnight terribly, especially during these crazy times.

Does anyone know what happened to Mustard and Johnson over on 850 AM on Saturday mornings? Last I heard, Craig had broken his hip, perhaps last Feb and would be out for a while.

Has that turned permanent?

I don't know what the big mystery is. If they don't plan on bringing him back and if they are what are they waiting for, why not just tell the guy.

On Facebook mentioning her appearance tonight at 11 pm on Dan Rea show/ WBZ, Donna Halper said she spoke to Morgan and he's still waiting to hear...

>>I spoke with Morgan last week. He is doing fine but wishes he had some news to share. He hasn't heard a word one way or the other.
