No new Beck/Hannity affiliate

Mike Gallagher. He's off as of 1/17 (WOR).

Oof. Not that Mike Gallagher's really any better. WOR would be better off with a local host in that timeslot, or at least someone younger than 55...

They haven't mentioned 10 to midnight or midnight to 2, have they?

Apparently they don't like him New York either.

Glenn Beck dropped by New York's WOR radio station over poor ratings.

No new Beck affiliate in New York either. Rush and Sean are still on WABC. :)

What may be happening is a trend. In Baltimore, WBAL went live and local day parts and WCBM became the Rush/Hannity station, the latest 12+ numbers for Baltimore show WBAL with 4.1 vs WCBM's 3.3. In Wilmington WDEL went live and local day parts and WILM became the Rush/Hannity station, the latest 12+ numbers for Wilmington show WDEL with a 3.4 and WILM with 1.8.

This may be happening in other cities, especially in the Northeast, but may be happening in other metro areas. Burn out may be finally happening after 20+ years. This one trick pony (ultra right wing preaching host focused show) has had a long run by any broadcast standard, but even the most popular TV shows get worn out and get replaced by newer shows. This may be what's starting to happen in the political talk radio world.

The other thing that has happened is there is far more right wing thought available now on Fox News, Drudge Report, Human Events, Tea Party, Sarah Palin, etc, so that maybe conservatives don't need so much preaching at them now to validate their views of the world, or they've grown tired of hearing the same thing day in and day out. Over exposure. Too much of a good thing.

So maybe finally WPHT in Philly and NYC's WOR are seeing a similar drop offs in their market shares and those stations have decided to go more live and local for probably similar reasons WBAL and WDEL did a few years ago.

Many in Philly have lamented the loss of their great heritage talk stations WCAU and WWDB. This new incarnation of the former 1210 WCAU today's 1210 WPHT might bring great ratings for that long time talk station and much happiness to the city of brotherly love.

I haven't seen any numbers, but as someone who used to love the Beck show then pretty much came to despise it, I can hazard a guess as to what went wrong and the action they're taking to fix it.

When Beck's show made its debut, it was talk radio with CHR production values. It was edgy, it was funny and it wasn't preachy. Listeners were referred to by Beck as "sick, twisted freaks." Over a several year period, it lost the edge and CHR styling and evolved into what it was last year. That awful "we will be the key" theme over dark, foreboding music led into what could only be described as preaching by Beck. The entire show had a somber tone and wasn't any fun at all. It was three hours of doom and gloom every day. Who wants to listen to that? The only time it was any fun at all was when Beck was off and Pat Gray and the show's producer were hosting.

I tuned into the show on the way to work this week and was surprised. The foreboding music was gone, replaced by upbeat theme music reminiscent of the show's earlier days. The delivery was upbeat and fun and the former focus on presenting topics in a humorous way seems to have returned. If they keep this up, I might actually enjoy listening again.

Maybe Beck might bring back his "Moron Trivia" and "Jeopretardy" bits if he truly wants to make his show fun again.

I used to hear Beck occasionally on WFLA when I visited the Tampa-St. Pete area. Back then he was a local, sort of red-neck version of Howard Stern. More bar talk than political talk. Maybe he should have stuck with that.

You guys all bring up good points as to what folks really liked about not just Beck, but Rush too. Both can be funny and entertaining. Maybe talk radio is now ready for the next new thing, someone new and younger as radio ad execs want to appeal the a younger demo anyhow, doing what Beck and Rush did back in the earlier days when they were the young turks. They both are so tarred as such over the top GOP partisans now, it may be too late for them to pull others into hear their shows.

Would some stand up comedian be able to clean up their act for radio and have enough interesting stuff to say using their ability to entertain to become the next great thing in Talk Radio? Sort of the radio version of a Jay Leno, Letterman, Conan, etc, who'd have interesting, entertaining, funny, stuff to say, yet could mix it up with callers. If so, who would you suggest?

I realize most of you can't get WDEL at www.wdel.com/ , but you can listen online. Next week, try listening to Al Messitti from 9am -12noon. He's a former reporter/columnist for the News Journal, but has an interesting show. I don't agree with all he says, but he's very entertaining and informative. What about a national show similar to how Al does his show?

Or for those with a half decent HD radio lying around, WDEL is receivable in the Philly area on WSTW-HD3.

Of course, if WDEL follows through on their Construction Permit for 10kw and a new pattern which has much better northern coverage, the station will easily be heard in a good portion of the Philly metro.

The most vulnerable CC station right now is Radio 104.5

I wonder what this station is billing because the commercial breaks are awfully short. Nevertheless, I highly doubt we will see "Rush Radio 104.5" or any sort of FM talker with Beck/Hannity on 104.5 (or even 106.1 for that matter).

I was talking to one of the news reporters in the WDEL newsroom a couple of weeks ago, and they said that the WDEL had put the 10K upgrade on hold, for now, due to the economy. Delmarva did do the upgrades to the WSTW tower though, from what she said.

That's interesting - and telling: Money for FM, not for AM. Not unusual, though.

When people say "the economy," they really mean poor sales. Several recent stories have appeared about Acme and Genuardi's/Safeway closing stores - because of "the economy." Meanwhile, there are also stories about how business is booming at Wegman's, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. I notice that often when one of the older chains is closing, it's because one of the newer chains has moved in nearby or is about to. The main issue is advertisers aren't buying radio. A close second is radio's unwillingness to invest in itself.

Much of the interference on the AM band is stations interfering with each other. So stations increase power. Guess what happens? More interference. Then add IBOC. Even more interference.

mabye GEN-X 104.5 ???? if the ratings dont improve cc will have to find something to do with 104.5

Maybe Rush Radio 104.5? If Radio 104.5's ratings don't improve, CC will have to keep its options open. GEN-X is a possibility, but IMHO if flipping 104.5 to Rush Radio is the only way to get Beck and Sean back on the air in Philly, CC will consider it. :)

Less than two business days left to find new Philadelphia affiliates for Beck and Hannity (not to mention a new Beck affiliate in NYC).

I don't think it's going to happen. Monday will come and go, and neither will be heard on a station within the Philly market.
