No Oasis this year but...

Be on the lookout. You could be getting a new Smooth Jazz station in DFW next week. The BA Network is pushing for new full satellite affiliates in Top 50 markets. Dallas, St. Louis, Kansas City and even Pittsburgh are perfect fodder for it. Don't look for any localism. It will be fully syndicated, a selling point for BA. The station will be nothing more than a desktop computer at a satellite affiliate. The music will be the same, new millenium Muzak with covers of pop tunes and lots and lots of vocals. Smooth Jazz could be coming your way but it won't meet your "jazz afficionado" expectations. But at least the "format" will be there, even if the "music" won't.

Where did you get this information and where do you think it would end up? 100.3?? CBS seems to be all about the pre-packaged formats.

BA has been syndicating a version of smooth jazz since at least the beginning of the year, if not from late 2006. I understand that this is a supplement to BA's smooth jazz consulting services, and intended for smaller markets... although I see no reason why it could not be used in larger markets, too... or even on an HD-2 channel.

However, just because a format is available in syndication does not mean every market will pick it up. That's like saying that there is a new Bently dealer in town, so I have to buy a Bently (I wish).

how about on 96.7??

Could be... they don't have any appearances after tomorrow (9/2). What is that signal like? Can you get in in a building? ;D

Info comes from various articles written about the format this year, some even in R&R. If you put together all that's been said and with the timing for format changes you can kind of come up with what I said as a hunch. BA needs some love and a cheap way out for stations to get some ratings from ACs and current ACs without paying staff is irresistable for a lot of stations to pass up. Not saying that just because it's available stations will eat it up, but if you look at the Top 50 markets without a Smooth Jazz format, but strong ACs/Urban ACs with paid local staffs, you can hurt 'em in the pocketbook faster than you can in the ratings, and that's good enough for low or no maintenance formats like Smooth Jazz from a dish for starters. If I were a GM paying talent right now in a Top 50 market and not performing, and the BA guys got a hold of me they could sell me on the Network to go after rich ACs/UrbanACs.

Just looking at ratings and putting together the aforementioned hearsay about the format overall this year alone, my bet is on KMVK Movin' 107.5 to flip to the BA Network's Smooth Jazz format as Smooth Jazz 107.5 The Oasis. Makes sense. Remember, BA's sales team is as smooth as its music. It'll bring back a familiar brand to the market. This incarnation of The Oasis doesn't have to have a local staff and no one has to plug in voice tracks. Full time satellite delivered. No maintenance and in a market big enough to eat it up, this time more economically for the station. Again, just a hunch. I have no facts to back it up. I don't even agree with what's happening with the format overall. I just think I've seen and observed enough to feel schooled enough to have this kind of a hunch. If my hunch is wrong guess that will be my hunch BACK! :D

And much to the shgrin of a few haters strolling about in here, I hope your hunch is more than a crick in your back. Good times.
