Not impressed with B94

Dan, when did Blink 182 have a hit last?? Maroon 5 has a brand new album out, of course it's going to get played often. I would hardly call the new songs slow or "whiny."

I'm betting the heavy playing of recurrents is to determine what people do and don't want to hear more of. Also, if they want to differentiate themselves from Kiss, they won't be playing as much rap, and rap is what's on the charts right now.

I'm just saying, B94 was associated with playing artists such as Blink 182 when they left the airwaves. I listened to the B and got accustomed to what type of artists they played and it was surprising that when they came back the type of artists were of a different category.

This actually has been the summer for whiny songs on Top 40. Even Kiss has put these sad songs in heavy rotation:

Big Girls Don't Cry
When You're Gone
Wait For You
Who Knew
Hey There Delilah
Home

All of these songs were monster hits, and B94 is putting them all into heavy rotation at once.

My only annoyance with B94 right now is the Nickelback overload. I'm not the biggest fan, so it's upsetting to hear them playing all five singles from their recent album.

I'll give it a few months and wait for the airstaff to be in place before I make any real judgment of the station.

Exactly. (i.e. playing those artists to death is part of why they tanked)

Dave, I agree with you on the Nickelback, I think that's why my best friend isn't digging the station. That and they're not playing enough Bon Jovi for her taste (which is a lot more than most people's taste) - but then again the new BJ album is very country-like and I'd be surprised if B 94 old OR new played it.

Oh, so B94 should be an Oldies station?? (Time marches on. Are they to be a CONTEMPORARY hit radio station, or a station locked in the past?)

B-94 played Blink 182 when they were hot, not b/c B-94 had some sort of special relationship with that band.
B-94 is playing a lot of Nickleback, b/c chicks who listen to CHR radio dig that band. Hell, Billboard Magazine is now saying Nickleback could have the album of the decade.

B-94 may not be playing Blink 182, but they are playing Fallout Boy, Linkin Park, Finger Eleven, All American Rejects, Green Day, the latest from Matchbox 20, The Fray, Evanescence, Snow Patrol, and other acts that CHRs play in 2007.

Keep in mind though that they are NOT a Rock station, nor have any intention of being perceived as one. They're a CHR/Pop station so the core sound is still Pink, Fergie, Rihanna, Kanye West, Britney, Justin Timberlake, Tombland, Nelly Furtado, and Gwen Stefani.

agreed chrles...keep in mind, if you're a 40 year old guy who'se in it for the music...you're not supposed to like b94...and if you are a 40 year old guy, and you are listening, and you don't like it...they're doing their job.

I think it was Sam Walton who once said "there is no such think as bad publicity". If that's the case, all these nay-sayers bashing B94 must be making the folks at CBS quite proud. I am not going to sit here and split hairs over whether or not they are paying too many recurents or too many oldies or not enough "current music" as truthfully its a matter of taste and personal opinion anyway. B94 is going for "mass appeal" and from the level of excitement they have generated in a week be it positive or negative, I'd say they are off in the right direction. For my musical tastes, I find them to be "dead on". Can't wait till they toss the DJ's into the mix to see what the final product sounds like but for my ears at this juncture, I'd take them over Kiss anyday. Its quite refreshing to hear the songs played at the proper speed for one.

Anyway, let's keep in mind the station is still "young" and evolving and its really hard to say what the final product will sound like until a month or so once the airstaff and permenant programming staff is in place.

OK, I'm 48 and I like it. What does that mean?

It probably means you're an old CHR guy who digs radio with some energy and excitement...and that doesn't have to involve the music at all with a good CHR...imaging, processing, jocks...you can hear a killer jock talk over a piece of crap and it sounds fantastic...music is basically about 3rd on the list...1, jocks...2, imaging...3, music...and 3 may be a tie for processing...maybe music is a 3 1/2...

Remember this is a station that is still in its reborn infancy. Yeah it sounds like it has a chance but then it still doesn't have an air staff and has the same management that wrecked the last couple of formats.

Oh, they can play all the Nickelback they want right now as far as I am concerned. Most interesting new stuff out there right now.

B 94 isn't playing that much hip hop as Kiss 96.1 is right? Which is a good thing. When I had it on the stream for B 94 they were spacing the songs like "Buy You A Drink", "Smack That" far apart and not one after another which is good. After all they aren't a hip hop station so a CHR station doesn't need to be playing 2 or 3 hip hop songs in a row like this "Party Like A Rock Star", "Buy You A Drink", "You Make Me Better".

CHR and "hip hop stations" aren't mutually exclusive. Some CHRs like Kiss are more urban/rhythmic leaning, but those that aren't still play a good amount of hip hop because that's what's occupying the Top 40 charts.

I sent my package to Keith at B94.... hopefully I'll hear from him soon.
