Not Looking Good for "WPOT"

The future of "WPOT", the pirate on first adjacent of local WKAF 97.7 and broadcasting over WOKQ 97.5, looks iffy, on the FM side anyways, with WKAF's upgrade from 1700 watts to 2050 watts. Since operating under thier construction permit, "WPOT" is much less audiable in Boston.

We'll see what happens, maybe they will go internet only soon?

I didn't know WKAF did an upgrade until now, but they have been sounding (a little) stronger lately.

I was on Columbia Road in Dorchester today and WOKQ was over powering them!!

Cough Cough Hot 97 WPOT Cough Cough

The FCC needs to get serious about pirates.

As a matter of fact,

http://www.fcc.gov/eb/FieldNotices/2003/DOC-293314A1.html

#> On September 1, 2009, agents from this office confirmed by direction
#> finding techniques that radio signals on frequency 97.5 MHz were emanating
#> from 76 Esmond St., Dorchester, MA
<snip>
#> The field strength of the signal on frequency 97.5 MHz was measured
#> at 181,163 microvolts per meter (uV/m) at 66 meters, which exceeded the
#> maximum permitted level of 250 uV/m at 3 meters for non-licensed devices.

So, 181.163 mV/m at a dx of .066 km ≈ 2.91 (".00290555" kw) watts ERP?

aaah...

so how long until there are enough complaints against Big City 101.3 to get the FCC to act on them?

Anyone else notice that 97.5 is much stronger than they have been? They had been getting stepped all over by 97.7 but today in Dorchester and South Boston they were coming in crystal clear. They were even interfering with 97.7. Also, on 93 north of downtown, they were getting overpowered by WOKQ. Now they are coming in. I wonder if they did anything with their signal.

There is always 87.7 works like a champ in NYC.
One big difference
87.7 in NYC is licensed (the audio of an LPTV station) and can be heard 40 miles away, and has a format that appeals to more listeners than a Caribbean station. Its city grade contour covers the most densely populated square miles in the country.

Yup, I first noted them up here in downtown Beverly Monday evening, then, at South Station, they were (are) coming in as strong as most of the other Dorchester area pirates (and have since——whereas before there was no trace of them).
So much for 2.91 watts! P=)

Universal Hub had a story about "Hot 97.5" and linked to an article in a paper called the Bulletin which conveniently did not mention that the station is illegal.

They broadcast from One Westinghouse Plaza (Ah, WPOT, a Group W station? :) )

Grade them an A for effort, F for legality.

Also: many in Congress support micro radio (legal) but will the FCC respond with 100 w or even 10 watt LPFMs?

No, they did broadcast from 1 WP——now they pump out the RF from
Esmond St:

Interesting comment from the above:

>>If a nice community-based station can be set up at any frequency they choose, then why not Mega-Maxi Corporation doing the same thing? Either the airwaves are regulated or they're not.

Hey, 890 is currently dark--why not let Entercom set up a station on that freq? I can _barely_ get the Sox on
WBOQ 104.9 at work--why not let them boost that power up to 50,000 watts? Clear Channel--now at
12 spots on your dial! We don't need no stinkin' FCC! :)

"I LOVE CORPORATE PIRATE RADIO!" :)

And they can raise their power just by buying a new transmitter on eBay, no need to file for a CP. If they want to go to 10,000 watts, just buy a 10,000 watt transmitter.

In the website chatbox last night, someone commented about the better signal, & Chubby Chub said the signal will get even better on Monday, I wanna see what they have up their sleve. I'm going into Boston Saturday, I will see for myself.

I hope it cover all of the Boston radio market. Thank God for pirate radio !!!!!!!

Hot 97.5 dont seem they are going any where they run around boston like its an legal station, and i cant lie its a good station its way better then pop/hip-hop jamn 94.5...... am not even from boston too

I hope their new signal makes it good into Waltham, I go there every weekend and it would be a pleasure to hear this pirate on FM besides special trips into the city.

Just remember, the stronger they make their signal, the more interference with WKAF 97.7 and more complaints = FCC shutdown sooner or later.

These other pirates are still up and running because most of them aren't interfering with much, and most of them are on first adjacents to out of market stations like Providence and Nashua/Manchester that don't make it good into Boston. This station is on the first adjacent to a legitimate Boston station! Obviously the frequency choice wasn't well planned, but then again what else do they ahve to choose from in the 97's in Boston? Nothing. 97.1, first adjacent to a much stronger Boston station, 97.3 strong fringe signal from New Bedford station, 97.5 first adjacent/WOKQ fringe, 97.9... idk, but antoher first adjacent.
