Not Looking Good for "WPOT"

WPOT IS DITCHING 97.5 AND MOVING TO 87.7 MONDAY MORNING (remember I broke this to the board first)

This is good, WKAF has this pirate off their first adjacent, and 87.7 is 100% empty after the DTV transition. Wasn't a RI channel 6 station on 87.7 before the DTV transition so it hadn't been clear? Well, now it is, give it up for the new Hot 87.7 and peace out to Hot 97.5 the name sounded good but mad stupid frequency choice, now they're using their heads lol.

I hope Hot 87.7 is a pirate blowtorch and I am able to get their fringe signal out in Lowell :D

So....did they cut The Wave's coax the other week? ;-)

That was my first and immediate thought...then I remembered The Wave is/was 87.9! P=)

I suppose, WPOT will be on their second adjacent, and The Wave was on their first adjacent up on the North Shore.

I Heard From The Guy Who Owns 87.9 Via Email That They Haven't Gotten Any Reports Of Interference From The FCC And They Have Been On For Over 6 Years. He Also Said They're Returning To The Air After The Police Find Out Who Cut The Coax And Damaged The Transmitter.

The transmitter was damaged as well?

Maybe a wannabe FCC agent paid them a visit but no one was home :D

Even if and when they return to the air, 87.9 The Wave serves the North Shore, so interference with 87.7 WPOT will hopefully and most likely be minimal.

They've been on the air for 6 years? Daaamn!

One big difference
87.7 in NYC is licensed (the audio of an LPTV station) and can be heard 40 miles away, and has a format that appeals to more listeners than a Caribbean station. Its city grade contour covers the most densely populated square miles in the country.

I know that and the FCC is good with it. They plan on putting two more in Washington, DC and one other spot that I can't recall right now. The pattern is very interesting it is a figure 8 pattern. I can hear it along the Jersey shore past Belmar.

Yes there was a channel 6 in Portland, ME (WCSH) and the old (WTEV) Channel 6 in New Bedford.

He Said That They All Ready Have A Suspect. He Also Said That He Is Friends With Someone Who Works For The FCC And He Said That He Would Be Fine As Long As He Is Not Interfering With Anything.

Thats why the FCC isnt good at enforcement. Thats like a cop saying its ok to drunk drive as long as you dont kill someone :)

that said im looking forward to Hot 97.5's frquency change. I love the programming and how Chub and some of the other DJ's scream the entire time. The enthusiasm for the music culture and community is refreshing. PLUS Pat Garret's voice could sell me anything. He could narrate a children's book on CD and i'd listen to it over and over!

Now whats next....an 87.5? I wonder what percentage of tuners start that low?

Quite a few of them tune down to 87.5.

But all the pirate radio you're hearing (and mark my words, there WILL be more pirate stations in the future) is the glorious result of media consolidation. Too many stations in the hands of too few. Trying to combat this is like trying to combat street gangs. For every station you take down, more pop up to take their place. Not saying it's right to violate the law this way, but it's obvious there are people trying to A) Replace what has been taken off the air or B) Trying to fill a hole/innovate, something corporate broadcasters will not do on their own. Transmitters are cheap and easily available. This is something that corporate broadcasters and the FCC cannot legislate/enforce their way out of. Banning the sales of radio transmitters/kits is the same as repealing the Second Amendment in many circles. And with all these HD FM sub-channels, filled with cheap, fourth rate programming, maybe it's better to tighten ownership caps to pre-1996 levels.....

Well banning uncertified transmitters is perfectly legal. Ask Intertech Fm they got slapped with about 30 K in fines for doing just that. Kits are a different story.

Some of the digital radios go down to 76 mhz as well as the transmitters (Japan's FM). I am surprised that someone hasn't purchased a transmitter, they go down there for export, and a pile of Japanese FM radios. You could broadcast whatever you like and who would know. A private radio network. DOubt that the FCC would be down in the old TV Channel 5 and 6 monitoring.

The transition to 87.7 hasnt gone smoothly. It was all distorted which was rectified when it was switched to mono.

I wish I had thought about buying a transmitter and putting a Pulse 87 in Boston before "WPOT" claimed 87.7.

I wonder how many watts WPOT will be running on 87.7.
