>Well, it was known for weeks Bart was getting 1 to 3pm. Howie is kind of a 'local' Al Franken. I believe WHJJ is using Glover and Bart as gappers. Next year WHJJ will likely 'change' for real. WHJJ is just using these two so as to heal wounds . WHJJ ratings will likely stay where they are for now. I think its about getting away from Air America. I dont think Bart was the right choice for that.

It's Arlene radio. Has she actually taken over programming the station?

Arlene is fine, but she's an anomoly. You can't make a whole station out of novices; the awkwardness and the unprofessionalism is grinding on the ears. I can deal with 3 hours of Arlene, but not a whole station.

During fill-ins, Howie's kind of interesting because he's a union guy. Do I want to listen to two hours of "angry union guy" a day? No. He's a one trick pony. And he talks wayyyy tooo fasttt. I don't even catch half the crap he says. He was interesting on Wednesday Night Fights. He should have stayed there.

Helen Glover can be interesting in short bursts. But she does alot of namecalling from what I've heard. I called the other day and got half a sentence out before she hung up on me. And 80 percent of the time she sounds bored. And she doesn't listen to the people she interviews; just keeps asking them questions they have already answered.

I dunno, they're only a couple of weeks into it, and things may improve. I don't know who they have producing the shows either, and that's going to be key if you've got novices on the air. I used to work with some big Boston talkers in my day, and those egos were bad enough. I was going to put in my resume because I really like the station, but I'm too old for this crap.

A bigger problem is that this is a small state and barring an extraordinary story (e.g. the Cianci trial, the Station Fire) there's really not a lot to talk about.

HJJ...Needs Talent.

Whoa...wrong. I don't think HJJ's managment is the best either...but talk radio is a TALENT game. Hate DePetro all you want, but he's a MASTER at uncovering and staying ahead of the biggest stories - and elevating the smaller ones to needed stature in "dry" times. With syndication, novices, and old warhorses, you just don't end up with as electric and listenable a product.

IMHO.

maybe the approaches are wrong in R.I talk.

too much retread on hosts and topics. Open it up!

It's not just a matter of "opening it up" to talk about more/other things. Part of the skill is to localize everything possible and relate it back to RI:

Hurricane Katrina-Rita? Flooding New Orleans? Sounds familiar - 1938. We built a Hurricane barrier - will it hold? Is it in good shape? Get Maintenance? What are our evacuation plans? We've got a plaque on The Biltmore indicating water level. What would be covered with water today that wasn't around then?

Federal Aid Money for the Big Easy? Billions are/will be handed to officials that are RIGHT NOW in court on corruption charges. $60 Million missing. Louisiana is historically one of the most corrupt states in the union. Sounds familiar. If RI were to need aid, who would be in charge of the money?

You get the idea. Every national story can have a local angle. Love Him / Hate Him...that's what DePetro is good at.
