Nova Mess, Part One from the Tucson Observer blog

Ultimatejock,

What does a half hour show pay? Did they ever tell you? Did you ever ask.

Here is the Question, The LMA is between New Radio Venture and Nova M. Nova M is no more so that would indicate the LMA is also no more yet the signal is still active with some people that took over Nova M. Does the LMA Transfer or is it Void and now 1190 is no more than a pirate signal just waiting on the FCC to shut it down??

Here's an educated guess:

No, 1190 is not a pirate signal. New Radio Venture continues to be the licensee, and the Nova M LMA is still in effect until either A) Nova M liquidates, or B) Nova M fails to make a payment--at which time they'd be in default. My guess is that the first month's payment (for January) was made in advance and on 2/1/09 the LMA went into default mode, thus the "for sale" listing with the broker.

But, since NRV doesn't want the thing back, and they don't want to suddenly have to run it, the ex-Nova M staff continues to come to work everyday and find that the locks haven't been changed. So they continue to do their thing.

A further logical guess is that Dr. Mike and his newly-formed "On Second Thought" outfit are likely in negotiations with New Radio Venture to either commence an LMA for 1190 and/or buy the SOB as the World Headquarters for their successor station/syndication endeavor, sans Randi.

But until something formal is announced along those lines, it may be safe to assume that any dude with 10 grand can probably walk through NRV's door, plunk the wad of cash on the desk, and short-circuit Newcombe's negotiations.

Got 10 grand burning a hole in your back pocket? Always wanted to have your own radio station? 5,000 watts (day) on a decent (mid-dial) frequency... lightbulb power at night--but covers the southwest side of town like a glove...

How about a Punk station? Or maybe Indie Rock? Or maybe...

10 grand is half what KIDR's owners are getting for their LMA on an even crappier facility. The prize right now is 8~Sixty with much better coverage day and night. Plus TMISU are motivated to unload that beast! But the Nurse and I say it aint gonna work 'cause no one is pissed off at George Bush anymore and lib-talk radio has flat lined.

Oh, so KIDR found the "Greater Fool," eh? BTW, the recent price-tag attached to 740's recent sale could have played a role in Nova M's retreat from 1190--i.e., about half. And for all of KIDR's night problems (masquerading as "KCBS-II") that loose two-tower pattern at least (theoretically) covers most of the metro. Theoretically. 1190 misses big chunks 24/7.

Not sure if anyone's noticed, though, but the price of damn near everything has tanked in the last few months. And the line of "Greater Fools" clamoring to lay down big bills to rent crippled AMs in towns with 15 percent unemployment rates and "ghost town" suburbs has gotten appreciably shorter.
