November 5: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on November 5. Discuss or comment as you please……

1956: The Australian Broadcasting Corporation makes its first TV broadcast from its Sydney studios. It is inaugurated by then Prime Minister Robert Menzies.

1973: KLCS (channel 58) signs on in Los Angeles. Owned by the Los Angeles Unified School District, it is currently one of just 8 TV stations nationwide owned by a local school district.

1977: CKCY-TV (channel 2, now CHBX-TV) signs on in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

1991: Actor Fred MacMurray (My Three Sons) dies in Santa Monica, California, aged 83.

1994: WTVU (channel 59, later WBNE, now WCTX) signs on in New Haven, Connecticut. The station’s claim to TV History Infamy is that the original construction permit had been granted in 1953! The original owners couldn’t make a go of the station, and sold the permit to another party in 1967, who used the channel for many years for a low-power translator for New Britain’s WVIT. This 41-year delay is the longest gap between CP/license and actual commencement of operation in TV history.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

The station was licensed to West Haven, CT as W59AA channel 59. I first saw the station's snowy color signal 30 miles away in New Britain, CT in the spring of 1995. They were technically the second WB affiliate in Hartford/New Haven. When that network started in January of 1995, the one night block of 2 hours aired on WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 of New Haven on Saturdays at 11:30 PM. Here's how it looked off an indoor antenna in New Britain in the spring of 1995:

1943: Television chef (and the possible inspiration for the Swedish Chef on the Muppet Show) Friedman Paul Erhardt (d. 2007) is born in Stuttgart, Germany. His television and guest appearances include "PM Magazine," "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee," and on QVC.

1966: As the UK celebrates 'Bonfire Night', Patrick Troughton makes his debut as the star of the BBC's science-fiction show Doctor Who, in part 1 of a six-part story, Power of the Daleks The intoduction of Troughton's portrayal of 'the second Doctor', after three years with original star William Hartnell, is only the first of many changes of lead actor; the mysterious time-traveling alien's 'regenerations' soon become an accepted part of the show's mythos, and the original series lasts 26 years, before spawning a revival in 2005.
