Just a few random TV related events that happened on November 5. Discuss or comment as you please……
1956: The Australian Broadcasting Corporation makes its first TV broadcast from its Sydney studios. It is inaugurated by then Prime Minister Robert Menzies.
1973: KLCS (channel 58) signs on in Los Angeles. Owned by the Los Angeles Unified School District, it is currently one of just 8 TV stations nationwide owned by a local school district.
1977: CKCY-TV (channel 2, now CHBX-TV) signs on in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
1991: Actor Fred MacMurray (My Three Sons) dies in Santa Monica, California, aged 83.
1994: WTVU (channel 59, later WBNE, now WCTX) signs on in New Haven, Connecticut. The station’s claim to TV History Infamy is that the original construction permit had been granted in 1953! The original owners couldn’t make a go of the station, and sold the permit to another party in 1967, who used the channel for many years for a low-power translator for New Britain’s WVIT. This 41-year delay is the longest gap between CP/license and actual commencement of operation in TV history.
(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)
