Band-Scanner said:The big difference between this situation and WFLZ's attacks on Q-105 in Tampa was that Q-105 was becoming a little "fat and lazy" and with no serious competition thought it could broaden their demo's without alienating their core listeners. WFLZ proved them wrong & Q105 soon flipped to Country. Z-100 has been on target for years, the music, the jocks, imaging, promotions all 1st rate.
Agreed, and I think it's important to remember that. You can't just copy & paste the Marc Chase (then PD of the Power Pig) playbook from 1989, especially since Z-100 isn't as vulnerable as Q-105 was. Scott Shannon could have told you that as he is the reason Q-105 was so successful in the early 80s.
But don't worry as Domino is a bright PD, and he did a good job programming 93.3 in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I think Domino needs to spend a bit more time getting to know the New York CHR audience. Kevin Weatherly has been doing such a great job with 97.1 Amp Radio b/c he's based out of L.A., and has his fingers on the pulse of the market. He was also part of the team that made KZZP 104.7 Phoenix such a huge success in the 80s (though Guy Zepoleon was the primary reason), and it was Weatherly who helped make 106.7 K-Rock such an influential Modern Rocker in the 90s. Domino, meanwhile, spent years at FLZ before taking on the PD job at Channel 95-5 Detroit, and in the process caused 93-1 DRQ to bail out on the CHR format.
