NTSC signals in analog for cable ready TV's after the turn off

My sister-in-law posed an interesting question tonight that I could not answer,
does anyone know what will happen to analog NTSC signals on cable systems
Comcast in particular after NTSC is shut off?
Many people (myself included) have a cable ready TV in a kitchen, basement or spare bedroom that is not used enough to justify paying for another Digital or HD cable box. If they shut it down a lot of people will be furious but any
reuse of the frequencies may be problematic.
Anyone you can talk to at Comcast these days have no idea what you are talking about, I have tried to reach the system CE on other occassions and would have better luck getting through to the Pope in Rome.

There should be no effect on cable or satellite subscribers at all.

The FCC enacted a regulation last fall that requires cable systems to provide downconverted analog of must-carry stations until 2012. They may do so either by continuing to provide analog signals on the cable, or by providing subscribers a converter box at no charge. I would imagine most systems will just leave the analog signals up.

They're only required to continue delivering the must-carry stations - those that have an over-the-air presence. I don't think they'll be dropping popular non-OTA channels, but no guarantees.

In the Boston market, chs 2,4,5,7,9,25,38,and 56 are retransmission consent.
Comcast buys ads on these stations (in the case of 2,the ch 44 sub channels are added) and Comcast gets consent to carry them.

Also after 2-16-09 they MUST carry them in HD IF they offer any other HD programming.
