NWA Radio Battle

JJ, There is a lot more where that came from if your interested. I've got over 100 drops recorded from the old reels. I have some from when Power was simulcasted on 97.9 in Ft. Smith as well as some old ones that talk about digital radio's and compact discs like they were new technology. I've also got every Power sticker since 1996. If you want to check all that out, let me know.

Since we got a NWA section going on here, I went through my old clips and put this together. It's airchecks from Power, The X, and Mix from back in the day. I was a teenager when I recorded this, so forgive me if it's not recorded good.

I like the first one from Power.... "Hey...All of our disk jockeys...really live in Arkansas...imagin that...the number one hit music station....Power 105...105.7.

Dude that trip back to the 90s was da' bomb! Bazooka Joe, Richard Kidd...great stuff!

I still might have some drops that go back to the early 90s of Mike Chase and Bazooka Joe that I should dig up and find.

Dallasrockradio, Power 105 has always had some great liners. Back in 1990, they ran one that'll read tame here, but really jumped out back in the day: "Power 105.7 -- we don't suck as bad as those other guys."

That be the one.
While Power 105.7 doesn't, my memory for exact words does -- suck, that is.
Thanks for the memory.

Since we are on the subject of old school Power 105.7 drops, I dug up the first one ever. Here is the sign-on of Power 105.7 as it flips from Hot AC K106. It features Big Dan Hentschel at 7am on July 31, 1989 and the intro to the very first song on Power (an appropriate one for the new moniker). Enjoy!

I just played this for Dan here at the office and we both got a kick out of it. Thanks again for the audio!

That was awesome. Thanks for sharing that!

I'm curious now, and JJ you might need to ask Dan on this one. I've got some drops that I always thought was before the voice talent Paul Dickson. His part in the debut of power was...."The 100,000 watt power station KMCK Northwest Arkansas". After hearing this clip of Power 105.7 coming on the air, I can't help but wonder where this old stuff came from since the station started with Paul Dickson. ???

Here is the old clip I am referring to that I thought was before Paul Dickson's days.

Thanks for posting these clips, especially the launch of Power 105.7. I remember listening to them that whole weekend before this when they kept saying "On Monday Morning, K106 goes away, forever." They also played a lot of scratchy 45's that weekend.

Those composites were fun too! The X was my favorite station at that time and it was good to hear those drops again!

I lived in Fayetteville from 95-04...

I even WORKED in radio in Fayetteville from 01-04, and all of these comments about Power 105 are very interesting..

I love how somebody on here knows when Power 105 launched...

Thinking back, that must have been something considering that they were a Hot AC before being a top 40, and the top 40 format in the late 80's was great, playing a wonderful mix of rock/alternative/ and dance..

I am curious...what was the radio dial like in Fayetteville back in '89....

Somebody even told me once that KKEG flirted with a Top 40 format for a short time in the late 80's......

Somebody get on here and tell me!!!!!

BTW....the woman that sings the Take Two Video adds is RICHARD KIDDS WIFE!!!!!!

Power 105.7 came alive just after Magic 107.9 went on the air in Feb 1989 after being EZ-108 since 1980.
K-106 was too similar and there was no Hot Hit station in the market so K-106 got sold and Power 105.7 was born....still with Dan Hentschel for a while.

Big Dan does a great job with keeping Classic Country tight.

Believe it or not...Magic 107.9 was almost country.

Too bad CC voice tracs everything. Someone should get some balls and go 24-7 live....yes, the listeners can tell.

KKEG never tried Top 40...they did try "New Rock" and dropped their "Classic Rock" format and that is what killed KKEG and even with their feeble attempt to call themselves classic rock...KKEG, with the best call letters ever, will never recover from that brilliant format change.

Many stations on FM didn't exist yet. As NWA experienced a population boom in the 90s, there were many sign on's during that time. Here's what I remember about the FM dial in 1989:

92.1 was KEG 92 playing album rock. I wouldn't be surprised if they leaned rock 40 for a brief time during that period as the rock 40 format was doing well during 1989, but I don't recall that.

93.3 didn't exist yet. They signed on sometime during the early 90s and I think they might have been something else briefly before they became The Eagle in the mid 90s.

94.3 was 94 KAMO playing country. Their studios were located on the west side of Rogers at the time.

94.9 didn't exist yet. They started out as a gospel station sometime in the early-mid 90s.

95.7 didn't start until a few years ago.

I remember 95.9 was a low power simulcast of KISR 93.7 out of Fort Smith during 1989.

96.7 didn't exist yet.

I believe 98.3 was a religious station based in Bentonville in 1989. Sunshine 98 perhaps ?

99.5 didn't sign on until about '93 or '94.

101.1 was still KLRC out of Siloam Springs.

101.9 and 102.3 didn't show up until 1992 when it signed on as Hot AC "102 Kiss". It only lasted maybe a couple of years before it became Q102, playing classic rock and trying to go against KEG 92. A few years later, it became Mix 101.9, then Hot Mix 101.9 circa 1999.

103.9 has been country KIX 104 for about as long as I remember.

104.9 was CHR KC-105. KCIZ was the local CHR throughout much of the 80s. Here is an interrupted sampler aircheck of KC 105 in November 1990:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/qtfjkt

Power 105.7 quickly become dominant and in 1991, KC-105 flipped to I believe oldies and later country. 104.9 The X didn't start until 1996.

As I already posted, you see that 105.7 fliping from K106 to Power 105.7 in 1989.

106.5 didn't exist until about '92 or '93. It has been nostalgia/adult standards ever since.

107.9 had just flipped from easy listening EZ 108 to Magic 107.9.

Wow, thanks for all that info. Very interesting!

I scanned some old bumper stickers I have. The razorback one from The Keg has a copyright of 1980 on the front, but a coupon for "The Big New Yorker" From Pizza Hut on the back. So i'm not sure if they remade the stickers or what.

WXMAN79:

Thanks for posting the KC105 aircheck. Wow! That brings back memories. I was the Music Dir and Afternoon guy there briefly....very briefly (I almost forgot working there until I stumbled accross that airchec you posted). THEY STILL OWE ME MONEY! LOL. The DJ on the aircheck was doing overnights when I was there; I forget his name but he was an incredibly nice guy.

I worked there for exactly 3 months (my last day was 11-28-90, my 23rd birthday...and the day before that aircheck). I just remember that the paychecks were late, then stopped coming; the owner wouldn't return phone calls, etc so I split. Wonder if I can collect my backpay with interest? Hmmmmmm.

It was a tough battle. Power 105.7 had a "big" sound (but a bit pukey) , a better signal, better marketing, etc but our morning man Don Christi was awesome (the best in town in my honest humble opinion).

Although getting stiffed with no paycheck and only being there 3 months, it was well worth it to work for the OM/VP, the legendary Les Howard Jacobey...one of my favorite people on the planet earth.

Here's the irony: fast foward to many years later...Les and I found ourselves as competing PD's in the same market (Gainesville, FL), and the old GM of KCIZ Bob Hendrickson was selling cars or something in the same city. How we all got from Springdale to Gainesville is a long strange trip.

All of these comments are really great...

Brings back LOTS of memories..

Nothing like kickin' back with a 6 pack on a late Friday night in 95' and rockin out to "The Frye Zone" on the KEG.... ;D

Other questions that I have........

Wasn't Dr Demento on Power 105.7 at one time?????

Who aired the old version of "American Top 40" with Shadoe Stevens......or was it on at all?????

Did "Powercuts"..a rock show, ever air on The Keg????

Who aired "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40" during his mid-eighties heyday?????

Was "Scott Shannon's Rockin' America Top 30 Countdown" ever on in NWA?????

How long was "The Top 20 Music Mart Countdown", a show that I remember very well, on Power1057 on Sunday nights????/

Technically, it did; it just wasn't on 93.3. It was 95.3 KJEM-FM, which was a class A signal. It moved to 93.3 in, I believe, either '91 or '92, became KESE and increased power substantially. I talked to the engineer at KMXV Kansas City shortly after the upgrade, and he said KESE was using an old KMXV transmitter.

94.9 didn't exist yet. They started out as a gospel station sometime in the early-mid 90s.

Signed on in either late '91 or early '92.

96.7 didn't exist yet.

96.7 is a translator. I'm not sure when it signed on, but I first remember hearing about it on "99.5 and 96.7 KOOL FM" in 1995.

I believe 98.3 was a religious station based in Bentonville in 1989. Sunshine 98 perhaps ?

Sounds right. KBCV, I'm thinking, were the calls at that time.

99.5 didn't sign on until about '93 or '94.

Technically, it was silent and on 95.9 as KFAY-FM. It was off-air for a long time. When I went to my orientation at U of A in late 1993, it was off-air. It was on when I started in January '94.

103.9 has been country KIX 104 for about as long as I remember.

I believe it became KKIX in 1983. It was easy listening KNWA before that. In 1989, I believe it was still just a 3,000 watt class A, though it was around that time when it became the class C1 100,000 watt signal it is today.

104.9 was CHR KC-105. KCIZ was the local CHR throughout much of the 80s. Here is an interrupted sampler aircheck of KC 105 in November 1990:

KCIZ was CHR until 1991, when Kelly sold it to Westark Broadcasting, which immediately flipped it to easy listening as "Eazy 105."

I seem to recall 98.3 being a satellite fed oldies station starting around '89, though I may have my years mixed up. I've still got some of their imaging stuck in my head all these years later (like one going to the tune of "Tobacco Road" singing "The Oldies Channel"). Before they signed on, I struggled to hear KQLL on 106.1 out of Tulsa.

Dr. Demento was on both K106 and Power 105.7. Growing up in the 80's I never really heard much of a difference, format wise, between K106 and KC105. To me, they were both Top 40 stations. KKEG was AOR, but they did have sort of a Top 40 slant for much of the 80's. Those were my three favorite stations growing up.

I can't remember who aired AT40 or Rick Dees, but they were both on somewhere on Sundays, cause I listened all the time!

Thanks so much for the KCIZ aircheck. God, I'm 15 again!

The change from KBCV to KOLZ happened sometime in 1990. I believe it happened at about the same time KPHN "95 Alive" in Ft. Smith became KOLX. I also seem to remember both of them running Westwood One's Oldies Channel. I'm not 100% sure that was on KOLX, but I remember it on KOLZ. It was a button on my radio when I was in Fayetteville, though I only hit it occasionally. I remember when it changed to "Soft Rock Z-98.3" on March 1, 1994.

AT-40 was on KCIZ. I'm thinking Rick was on K-106/Power 105.7. I know K-106/Power 105.7 had Casey's Top-40 after it launched while AT-40 continued on KC-105.
