NYC Arbitron Radio Ratings: May 2012

And I hope that the former WRKS would hold a candle to WBLS. The urban station did very well bringing former "Kiss-FM" people like Shaila, Lenny Green and a few others to the station.. WEPN now at 98.7 is near 2.0 and gets a 1.8. I'be been posting airchecks from the last weekend of WRKS' "Kiss-FM" back around late April and it was a lot of fun. It has been a 30-year run, but I missed that station. The loss of Hal Jackson was so sad, Donna Summer is gone, bur her music lives on, and Jim Ryan will be the new PD at CBS-FM replacing Brian Thomas.

What's going to happen on 1050? I live in the Poughkeepsie that they're still simulcasting ESPN Radio on 98.7 and it comes in loud and clear in the daytime and at night. And it is going to take effect starting in September. It will become a Spanish sports station known as ESPN Deportes Radio and it is going to carry all over the place including most of Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Newburgh and the rest of the Hudson Valley listening area to get a Spanish ESPN station. It's going to be the next "El Ritmo "

Five words can explain WEPN-1050/98.7's Springtime surge:

New York Rangers Playoff Games.

Sure, it would have been great for them had the Broadway Blueshirts made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, but for a station starting it's transition to FM, the Rangers' playoff success had to be a great thing for ESPN New York.

To get back on the CBS-FM situation, the station is still doing well right next to "Lite-FM". Now that Brian Thomas has left the station, Jim Ryan came in as PD. He has been a PD at WLTW for years and he is taking Brian's spot.

Last month, I was predicting that Joe McCoy was going to return to CBS-FM back in 2004, but it never happened. Now, Jim Ryan is now his replacement instead of Joe McCoy.

And in addition to that, they're playing too much 80's along with some 70's and few 90's thrown in. Look at "Fox Oldies" in Poughkeepsie, they did very well playing a selected songs from the 60's and 70's along with a bunch of 1955-63 pre-Beatles stuff thrown in. I'll give you a rundown of songs heard on "Fox Oldies":

1. "How Can I Be Sure" - Rascals
2. "At the Hop" - Danny & the Juniors
3. "Last Kiss" - Frank Wilson (Pearl Jam covered this song)
4. "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" Neil Sedaka (He also remade that song back in 1976)
5. "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) - Delfonics
6. "Bye Bye Baby" - Four Seasons
7. "Rebel Rouser" - Duane Eddy

These are al the songs heard on "Fox Oldies" earlier today while I was on the van when Bob Corisino is still on that station, and I hope CBS-FM needs to put 50's and early 60's songs back to the airwaves. "Fox Oldies" did well in the fall Poughkeepsie book with a 3.2, we'll see what happens in the Spring book. CBS-FM needs to wake up and smell the coffee and brings back oldies and branding of the station and it is still "New York's Oldies Station". If not, wait until CBS-FM's 40th Anniversary this July and we'll play some pre-Beatles stuff. Enough said, let's get on with it.

Joe McCoy was the PD THIRTY YEARS AGO. 1) He's retired 2) He's gotta be at least in his mid-70's. An incredibly talented guy, but his full time days in radio are over, because he wanted them to be over.

CBS-FM needs to wake up and smell the coffee? Yeah, why be happy with a 6.2 share in Market Number One, when you could have a 3.2 in Poughkeepsie!!!!

Not only is Poughkeepsie not New York City, CBS-FM is more successful in their own market than Fox Oldies is doing in their own market.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The 50's aren't coming back, they shouldn't come back, and because they're not playing stale music from 6 decades ago, CBS-FM is beyond successful.

I gotta second the not-broke-don't-fix rule. I never listened much to WLTW or WKTU, and except for a few individual shows, never cared for WCBS-FM period.

Yet, there are all three.
Very not broke.

* * * * * *

It's been twice now in the past year that I've gotten WGNY 1220 and its Fox oldies out this way.
We're between Hazleton and Pottsville.

There's a pretty good AM oldies choice in these parts. WAZL 1490 is the best for me. Gem-FM's 730 signal reaches here and they're okay ; that station is the next radio choice. WLSH Oldies 1410 would be third. The latter two are a bit mired in the 300-tune syndrome, though.
WLSH punctually would show in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton book even as a strict daytimer. Not anymore, though, since the Arbitron cutback/boycott.

That said ..... the main avenue for Oldies here remains the internet stations. It's getting more main by the week.

I'm really stunned that somebody would propose that a radio station add '50s music to its playlist! I think that poster might have to repeat over and over again in the mirror that the year is 2012 and NOT 1986!!

With WLTW getting a rating above 8, does anyone know when the last time it, or any other station received such a phenomenal overall number in NYC, outside of the Christmas music season?

Not only if you can listen to Sirius/XM's "50's on 5" or Rewound Radio. Satellite radio would be a good choice to get your 50's or early 60's pre-Beatles music fix, but "50's on 5" and "60's on 6" from Sirius/XM would be a good station that has the same selection from "Fox Oldies" in the Poughkeepsie area, because it's on 98.9 and it's on terrestrial radio.

Rewound Radio is a streaming site where it has the same music than "Fox Oldies". I guess any former CBS-FM listeners can tuned in to "Fox Oldies" for their music just like the way it sounded on CBS-FM since 1972. "Fox Oldies" sounded almost a lot like the old CBS-FM from 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995 and so on until 2005.

"they're playing too much 80's along with some 70's and few 90's thrown in."

Keep in mind that 90s music is now 20 YEARS OLD--older in relative terms than the music WCBS-FM was playing when it started its long (though briefly interrupted, then happily resumed) run in 1972. If you were graduating from high school in the 90s, and 90s music was therefore your music, you're now in your 30s, in the heart of the target demo. In 1972 CBS-FM was playing a lot of stuff from the immediate pre-British Invasion era, and even a little early Beatles and Stones, at a time when they were still core artists for WABC. If they programmed now the way they did then, to reach listeners all the way back to their late 20s, you ought to start hearing songs like Outkast's "Hey Ya" or the Stones' "Rough Justice" or Destiny's Child's "Say My Name" soon on WCBS-FM...not to mention some of the first releases from Jay-Z like "99 Problems." You probably won't, for a while, but it might make a lot more sense than some people would think...

Perhaps Merlin should flip WEMP to Soft AC and get listeners from Lite FM and CBS FM.

If I Owned the station, I would do that. Only problem...... The station needs a decent amount of time to gain an audience, and as much as i love Soft AC, I will note that the format does not bill as well as a typical AC due to the older demographics.

But, people thought that WFEZ Miami would fail when it premiered at Christmas 2010. Now, its beating the heritage AC station down there (WLYF) AND is now #2 in the market.

Thanks for the info! I was listening to Fox Oldies and I hear "Twistin' the Night Away" by Sam Cooke which is a great song which was also part of CBS-FM's format. I remember back when WGNY's "Fox Oldies" was playing "In the Still of the Nite" by the Five Satins and it is still the #1 oldie of all time in the "New York Top 500" on CBS-FM from almost 20 years ago when it was played on Thanksgiving, and I hope this station will play "In the Still of the Nite" which is one of the best oldies song in NYC, and I hope CBS-FM should play it for the 40th anniversary next month.

As you know, the 50's are not going anywhere. You've got satellite radio as I said "50's on 5", "60's on 6" where they had a lot of pre-Beatles stuff along with a lists of stations including WMTR which is a pretty good station than CBS-FM, but the signal reached NYC, but it was originate from Morristown, NJ. And if you have the internet or TuneIn app, there's "Fox Oldies" in Poughkeepsie and they have streaming if you want to check http://www.foxradio.net to go to the "Listen Live" section and click the "Fox Oldies" link and BINGO! Now you can enjoy the music, just like the way it sounded on CBS-FM from 40 years ago. If you are a long time listener of CBS-FM from 1972-2005, you would love this. "Fox Oldies" is the best!
