NYC Arbitron Ratings: Holiday 2012

http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb001

These are publicly released age 6+ overall rankings covering the Holiday 2012 survey period of Thu. 12/6/12-Wed. 1/2/13.
Next survey period is January 2013 covering the dates of Thu. 1/3/13-Wed. 1/30/13 with the data release date being Mon. 2/18/13.

With Mark Simone taking over the 10A-12 noon timeslot, WOR ratings will go only up and even better.
And if Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity also move from WABC to WOR the station will go higher in the ratings.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Hannity is the reason for WABC decline. If WOR has any clue they would hire some talented local host for the afternoon drive.

A 2.2 for WABC and a 1.1 for WOR..these have to be the lowest ratings ever for both of these stations. WOR should improve with the latest changes, Mark Simone, in particular.

WABC might go below a 2 share next time. With the continued direction of wall to wall syndication, this is a distinct possibility.

Mark Simone will do nothing for WOR' s numbers. Hannity is a disaster. People are tired of sour grapes and that's all we've heard since the elections and let's not even mention the BS these hosts did leading up to the election!

These numbers for WABC and WOR are probably all-time lows in audience share. (They certainly are all-time lows dating back as far as ratings have been taken in New York, and that means the Crossleys and HooperRatings of the 1930s and 1940s. Meanwhile, noncomm WNYC-FM has now done something that pubcasters have already accomplished in other top-10 markets like Washington, Boston and San Francisco--achieve parity with their cnmmercial format competitors. This means WABC, WOR, and commercial talk radio as a format, are in serious trouble if they don't rebound immediately to more normal levels after the holidays.

WPAT,
WQXR,
WOR.

Ouch. Good thing the Holiday book isn't that important, eh?

In Washington, SF and Raleigh NC, the NPR talk affiliates are typically #1 or #2 overall 12 +. Taken together, WNYC AM-FM checks in with a 2.9 for the Holiday 12 book, which tops the other N/T stations in the city. BTW, considering that DC, SF and the Research Triangle of NC are also heavily liberal places, does this settle the debate over whether NPR is the progressive answer to conservative talk?

WABC's 2.2 is tied for their worst book ever. They also pulled a 2.2 in the Winter, 1984 book. That's, of course, since they've become a talk station. As for WOR's 1.1, yes, it is the worst they have ever done in the history of New York radio ratings.

Vince,

If you've read my post on the NYRMB under the thread Arbitron Book, I predicted that with Mark Simone and the possibilty of Rush Limbaugh and Sean hannity jumping to WOR from WABC, WOR is only going to get better. And if Limbaugh and Hannity migrate to WOR and WABC slides even futher downward, the station's in trouble.

What's your take?

Thanks,

Limbaugh and Hannity are their own disasters. Sponsors no longer want to be associated with such dividing shows. Have you heard the kinds of spots WABC is running most days? Also it's no longer about ratings it's about the bottom line. WABC will do better without these two shows and WOR will be stuck with them. Like Nark Simone their time has passed. Wake up, it's 2013 not 1998 anymore!

OC3,

What's the reason why Rush Limbaugh and Sean hannity are falling? Are they burned out, or is it because the talk radio listening audience is just tired of hearing Limbaugh & Hannity and they offer nothing new to the table?

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Radio is a business and IMHO Limbaugh and Hannity no longer fit into a good business plan. The stations have to fork over big bucks to Premiere to carry the shows AND then they have lots of trouble selling the shows. Take away that payment, sell the same number of spots, and the bottom line is already better. The number of clients that don't want to be associated with these shows grows almost daily and it is national and local. Limbaugh has never had great national sponsors on his show...even from the start. The big national companies don't want to be associated with any shows that alienate part of the potential audience for their products. Big Payments + Trouble Selling = the End!

You also can't ignore the fact that these stations need to make a full-time commitment to news/talk programming in order to really succeed.

The weekends, even if they don't sell like weekdays, are a 48-hour promotion for the station. You can't fill all those hours with crap and expect a result other than a slow, steady decline. That's what happens to any company when it stops advertising. Radio is in the advertising business for heaven's sake -- these guys should know it better than anyone!

With a few exceptions, talk radio in New York and around the country is a vast wasteland on weekends. Brokered shows, infomercials, "best of" shows, etc. With the two Mark Simone Saturday shows gone from WABC, it is worse than ever.

I can't imagine these weekend shows get any ratings at all.
I'm sure the medical and financial shows have very tiny, but loyal listeners, virtually all over 65.

KFI in LA, probably the best talk station in the country does have some good weekend shows. KGO,as well.

I was in South Florida earlier this month and enjoyed WIOD and WFTL during the week. Saturday and Sunday were unlistenable, with the exception of Ken Held's Doo Wop show.

I really wish there were more general interest shows on the weekend. I know these info mercials pay the bills, but does there have to be so many of them?

A respected news/talk station leasing time to quacks is the equivalent of a luxury hotel renting rooms by the hour. Sure they can get away with it for awhile and rake in some quick bucks, but eventually the mainstream customers who really support the place will tire of the floozies hanging around the lobby and will go elsewhere. WABC and WOR listeners have gone elsewhere.

No one said they were smart, just money hungry. Face it.... this is not the Golden Age of Radio and the owners of today are at the low end of the food chain but this is the reality. NYC radio in 2013 is what it is and it won't change until they kill the fatted calf.
