NYC Dial-I wish it were like this.

Do you honestly want a religious station on a major market FM when it will serve the same purpose on AM?

There is a 99.1 rimshotting NYC in Zarephath, NJ. There are also a few 99.1 pirates in Brooklyn.

What about 87.7?

Don't forget WPLR in New Haven, also a strong 99.1 signal.

There already is a religious station on a major market FM in the NYC area (COL Newark, NJ), WFME 94.7, owned by Family. :)

Yeah, but no comparison to the presentation of formats on both stations. At least WAWZ (Star 99.1) is more "uptempo" with Christian Contemporary (being a Christian station) while 'FME is more "Catholic" in its approach as they have religion talk shows, church music, etc.

"Religious station" is about as accurate as saying "Spanish station."

There are many religious beliefs. There are many ways of presenting them. No single station will appeal to every seeker of religious programming on the radio.

As an example, a person who likes Contemporary Christian might never listen to a teaching and preaching station; a Catholic or Jew might not like either.

Since we're on the subject of unrealistic NYC dials, I might as well put my very unrealistic NYC dial fantasy list:

87.7 - WNYZ - Free form radio
88.3 - WFDU - Move them away from their signal share with NYU
89.1 - WBGO - Move jazz to a better signal, drop NPR
89.9 - WKCR - keep them there for now
90.7 - WFUV - their format is alright, just drop NPR newsbreaks at the top of the hour, same as 'BGO
91.5 - WNYU - the city gets out of radio for good, NYU gets a 24 hrs signal
92.3 - WUTP - New York Uptempo. Hey, why not?! And some Saturday afternoon Italo to boot (pun slightly intended)
93.1 - WPAT - Spanish-language sports format (mostly futbol and beisbol, with some boxeo in between)
93.9 - WNYC - keep them there since it works out
94.7 - WQXR - classical music gets a better signal
95.5 - WABC - news/talk goes to FM
96.3 - WXNY - Spanish A/C; Latin House mix Saturday nights
97.1 - WQHT - Hip-hop and R&B
97.9 - WSKQ - similar format as today
98.7 - WRKS - Urban A/C
99.5 - WEPN - ESPN New York moves there
100.3 - WHTZ - The Z isn't going anywhere
101.1 - WCBS - Neither is CBS-FM
101.9 - WRXP - Contemporary rock; drop all classic rock; keep alternative down to 1992
102.7 - WWFS - format similar to WEBE 108 or WFAS but w/o John Tesh and with local djs
103.5 - WKTU - not going anywhere
104.3 - WAXQ - Q-104.3
105.1 - WWPR - ghetto music needs a home, somewhere :)
105.9 - WQCD - smooth jazz returns
106.7 - WLTW - Bringing back some of the older A/C hits would be nice
107.5 - WBLS - some more classic soul would be nice

I would love to see WEPN on 99.5 FM. ESPN definitely needs to be there. However, I don't think 'BAI would leave the NY market. They'd have to go to a non-comm.

I don't see Citadel blowing up 'PLJ to move WABC to 95.5 FM. 'PLJ simply brings in too much ad revenue and reaches a desirable market, LI and NJ soccer moms.

Smooth Jazz isn't returning on any stick. 105.9 in NY has to be either a non-profit or brokered. :)

105.9 could be a Christian Contemporary owned by Salem. 105.9 The Fish anyone?

92.3... don't know about uptempo. If that doesn't work, the country music is a second option. :)

If we are going to be unrealistic, let's go all the way. Here's my vote for "not going to ever happen" New York City Radio.

No, there's more. Remember the country line dance craze of some years back?

jmtillery's line-up looks good, but he forgot country gospel and bluegrass. Maybe they could be on AM? ;D

He also forgot classic country, maybe that can go on 101.1? :p

By popular demand, here's my slightly revised vote for "not going to ever happen" New York City Radio.

87.7 - WNYZ - Country Bluegras
88.3 - WFDU - Country Bluegrass
89.1 - WBGO - Country Bluegrass
89.9 - WKCR - Just Country and Nothing But Country
90.7 - WFUV - Pure Country
91.5 - WNYU - Country Country with a Country Mix
92.3 - WXRK - Country with the Nashville Sound
93.1 - WPAT - Both kinds of music - Country AND Western
93.9 - WNYC - Country Legends
94.7 - WFME - Country Country
95.5 - WPLJ - Scott Shannon's True Country
96.3 - WXNY - More Country
97.1 - WQHT - Hip-Hop Country
97.9 - WSKQ - Super Country
98.7 - WRKS - Urban Country
99.5 - WEPN - Sports Country
100.3 - WHTZ - Z Country
101.1 - WCBS - Jack Country
101.9 - WRXP - Classic Country
102.7 - WWFS - Fresh Country
103.5 - WKTU - Dance Country (with a lot of Cotten Eye Joe)
104.3 - WAXQ - Q Country
105.1 - WWPR - Ghetto Country
105.9 - WQCD - Smooth Country
106.7 - WLTW - Southern Gospel Country
107.5 - WBLS - Deep Soul Country

I forgot to include the "Destined to be Number One" format of all time in the "not going to ever happen" to New York City Radio. I'm switching WAXQ-FM 104.3 from "Q Country" to Dixieland Country. Now, there's your big winner.

My wish would be for WMGM 1050, WMCA 570, WINS 1010 and WABC 770 to compete against each other playing
top forty. I also wish it was 45 to 50 years ago because nothing that I hear on radio today has any validity to me.

There's no doubt about it that radio has changed alot within the past 50-years. Not all change is bad, while some may consider some of the more recent changes to be not so good. Technology has certainly played a major role in many of the changes today. Consolidation has played another big role. In any event, we can all agree radio is definately different today than it was years ago.

Different=cheaper, more mindless and crappier

SO TRUE!!!! That was when you knew the DJs and what time they were on the air. The stations were involved with the community. Remember WMCA Good Guy concerts at high schools throughout the NY area? My school had The Jive Five, hosted by Big Ed Baer in the spring of '68. What a great night that was! :)

IMHO, New York and Miami/Ft Lauderdale have terrible talkradio. Local talkradio doesn't exist in Miami; in NY you can only find it if you're willing to make an appointment with John Gambling and Joan Hamburg on WOR. :)
