NYC Radio Dream Dial

Looks like radio for New York after a sinister round of "ethnic cleansing" of the population.
Yeah, it's important to know that "Reich" is not a grunge band.

Sorry, but you have to go back. :giggle: I am joking of course.

Like I said, I left the Urban channels largely untouched. So if you include all the surrounding burbs everyone is demographically represented.

Besides if you flew to any of the mother countries of the demographic majorities in NYC you would expect to hear largely local content. Just as it is when people come here they are largely exposed to our culture and not the other way around.

If you go to, let's say, Colombia, you will find in the big cities about a third of all music stations playing op, rock and AC songs in English, mostly from the US. Along with that you will hear a couple playing mostly songs by Colombian artists, but mostly ones playing the same songs that you hear in all of Latin America.

And people who come to the US from different places in Latin America generally arrive as adults and their music tastes will stay pretty much the same for the rest of their lives. If they liked English language pop, rock or AC, they will continue to like it. But if they liked reggaetón or vallenato or Spanish pop and rock artists, they will continue to like them.

Very few will adopt a new "favorite" kind of music.

Sorry for causing you trouble, mikerock. I wasn't implying you were a white supremacist or anything like that, just saw the list and thought it was funny that NYC could have that kind of dial but didn't notice you'd left the existing Black and Hispanic channels out rather than replacing them with music that generally attracts white listeners.

You go

LOL, I know you were joking. The dial was not far from what I listed going back far enough.

In 1986 the top spots in the ratings from 1-4 were all AOR for the Nassau/Suffolk book.

In 1984 WNEW-FM AOR was #1 in NYC for Men, 18-34 and #2 18-49.

In the 1983 Spring NYC book, WAPP AOR ranked #3 with a 5.0.
In the Nassau/Suffolk book in the fall of 1983, WAPP 5.0 share, #3 for 12+ and ranked #2, 18-34.

In a market that is about 30% Hispanic in ages 18-49, you've eliminated two of the three Spanish language stations.

Well in real life both 95.5 PLJ and Alt 92.3 have been removed from the market but I know that doesn't bother you.

I viewed the loss of PLJ as a sad watershed moment for radio, not just in New York but for the industry overall. I've written about that here extensively, and ever since then things have continued going exactly the direction I knew they would for radio.

There will be no dream dial in New York. It will continue to contract and become less and less appealing. Don't worry, the Spanish stations will live on, and religion has a bright future on FM, just as it did on the dying AM and shortwave bands before it.

I agree. I'm sure that there are many unwritten ideas of how the New York radio dial should look like. As for me, I am not wasting any time participating in this academic exercise. I accept the New York radio dial for what it is: imperfect, pleasing some and dissatisfying others.
I think you take the thread too seriously. IMHO, this was supposed to be a fun thread not based on any reality. Personal preference "Dream dial".

I just because I don't have my own dream dial doesn't mean that I don't enjoy reading other members' dream dials. Actually, I have found some of the station ideas to be amusing, especially those of Steve Green NEPA.

Well, I just won the lottery. I'm okay now, despite a shark attack on the way to the bank and being struck by lightning back home. Here's the dial I just bought. Something for everyone, I ttust.

Where is my classic rock station? 😲

It’s a good thing that these are dream dials, because if they were true, they’d be a nightmare.
I would take several of them over the bland dial that exists today. NYC radio in particular is really awful compared to other markets and I am not just talking about the lack of Alternative. It is all bland spoiled garbage.

It is like every station - station owner has made an extreme effort to make it is sound as uninteresting, bland and dead as possible. Nothing unique or new. Just awful, which I bet allot of research by various companies went into making it exactly that way.

I would not recommend NYC radio to anyone and rather advise them to just stream other markets or use other services.

I agree no variety and very boring. The same 10 stations playing the same songs. We have 2 Hot A/Cs, 2 Hip Hop stations, 1 Classic Hip Hop station, 2 sports on FM, 1 news on FM, 2 Spanish Language Stations, 1 A/C, 1 Classic Rock, 1 Adult R&B station, 1 Conservative Talk Station, and 1 Christian Station (non-commercial). We lack commercial stations including:
1. Alternative Rock
2. AAA
3. Country
4. Variety Hits
5. Oldies
We lost:
1. 95.5 which was Hot A/C
2. 92.7 which was Spanish Language CHR.

And yet it's been explained many many times that New York, and New Yorkers, move to a rhythmic beat. The huge numbers of African Americans, Latinos, and other first-generation ethnics in the market, who have never shown an iota of interest in country, rock, album alternative or moldy oldies ('50s/'60s), preclude advertiser interest in those formats. New York radio has what most New Yorkers like to listen to. Look to suburban or non-commercial radio for those other genres, start streaming or start paying for SiriusXM.
