NYT: Viewers Flee MSNBC

MSNBC doesn't care if a bunch of 70 year olds are mad at them, because that's not the audience they're looking to get.
Look at their spot load. Look at who advertises on their air and what gets advertised. The customers for that stuff is the audience they're looking to get. If the current programming draws those viewers in then they're doing right. If not, either the programming needs to change or the audience does. (Care to guess which is easier?) But they also shouldn't burn down the house just because their viewers have some temporary fatigue after a hard-fought election and have pivoted to other areas of their lives for awhile.

It’s probably the same spots on Fox News. They are not aiming at a younger demographic because they know that group isn’t watching.

Maybe not the exact same spots, but the same categories of advertisers: pharmaceutical companies telling you to "ask your doctor" about their latest wonder drug, durable medical equipment purveyors, attorney groups hawking class action suits or settlements, travel packagers. (Do precious metals con men also advertise on MSNBC the way they do on Fox?)

What you don't see are ads for products and services aimed at parents, kids, families, the 25-54 (or 18-49) sweet spot. Those eyeballs are elsewhere.

It's not just temporary fatigue, it's a sense of resignation from an audience that has watched Trump get away with everything, seize back power and embark on his path of retribution and destruction of the things they value. They're mad at how ineffective the institutions they hoped could stop this have been, and they don't want to hear from them anymore.

MSNBC hosts are still on the air talking about the same things they talked about before the election. The audience feels let down by the failure of this messaging and have no confidence in them to make any difference now that the election is over. And Morning Joe's betrayal of taking the show to Mar-a-Lago was the last straw. So they have tuned out.

Guys there's a 2025 Governors election and it will be the time when MSNBC Changes pundits and test them before the big events the 2026 midterm elections. Now how that exactly lowers the median age is yet to be seen here. But the 2025 Gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia is a test run on how things are going to be in 2026.

At least now they might actually be doing something to effect change, like contacting their congresspeople or getting involved in local politics, rather than watching a tv channel.

We shall see if this holds up in 2026 when the midterm elections come up when the News/talk channels show up at state capitals to cover Governors elections. But in past cases we mentioned that local news outlets tend to get more attention in midterm elections. Sure a small portion of viewers will get involved in state and local politics either as election staff or as advocates in some form.

Also how MSNBC survives without the resources of NBC News will be interesting to see in 2026 given that Comcast has sent its reporters to NBC News Now. It will be interesting to see the median age differences between NBC News Now vs MSNBC post spinoff.
