Odd Coincidence in a DVD set

T

TimL

Guest
I mentioned a while back a DVD set I had picked up at a Family Dollar Store of 32 mostly rare classic TV shows, One of which was Ellery Queen with Lee Bowman in the lead role which was live on DuMont. The episode was originally aired November 8, 1951 (Thursday, 9:00 PM). In searching the classic TV forums for another reason I saw that in January poster DM601 had done a retro Cleveland/Toledo schedule-For November 8, 1951! So just out of pure chance I now have an episode of a series that I know was aired on WXEL-TV 9 in Cleveland, not to mention DuMont shows are rare in themselves. This may mean nothing to most of you but I thought it an interesting coincidence..
Edited by TimL on 07/10/05 05:40 AM.

Wish I had one of those stores near me. Never seen the set you mention on sale anywhere around here ...

Assuming you are in the Los Angeles Calif. Area the nearest Family Dollar to you is likely in Yuma, Arizona..The set is sold under the TV Guide Name and has 4 DVD's in it One each of Westerns, Comedies, Detectives and one with a mixture of Show types. There are some of the regular Public Domain shows that are on DVD's constantly but others included are:Gangbusters, Man With a Camera (Charles Bronson), Jim Bowie, Bat Masterson, Cisco Kid, Sgt. Preston, Sherlock Holmes (Mid-50's), Annie Oakley and Alfred Hitchcock. Several shows have original commercials. I got the set for $5.00..Might almost be worth a drive..
Edited by TimL on 07/10/05 06:15 AM.

I'm pretty sure you can find the TV Guide DVDs at a store near you -- Best Buy has them, though they're slightly more expensive that what Family Dollar's charging them for.

Not with gas prices the way they are, and L.A. to Yuma is pretty much an all-day round trip.

I've seen the TV Guide sets in Dollar General stores at $10.00, and they're starting to show up in the $5.50 bins at some Wal Marts, but I haven't seen them in any Family Dollar stores in West TN yet.

You mean I'm going to have to (shudder) set foot in Wal-Mart to get one?

Yes, and it's a piece of ...

Narrow aisles, merchandise crammed into too-small areas, and way too many people letting their brats run amok.

Scott, find me the DVD set and I'll reimburse you cost + postage. Anything to keep from going to Wal-Mart.

Let me see?

I have one Dollar General Store listed in Miami, and it's right near me, I've never been there. I'll go tomorrow and check for you. Aside from those $5.99 DVD sets at Walgreens (two for $10), I only have seen & purchased single Public Domain DVD's from "Dollar Tree", and the best Dollar Store in the Country, the "99 Cent Only Stores", like the one on Woodman & Parthenia. I miss that word, Parthenia!

Re: Let me see?

Ok KM, now that you have embarrassed me in front of everyone here who has no Idea what we are talking about, I am adding an extra $1 Finders fee, if I can locate your DVD set. How can I ever post here again, my alleged credibility is ruined :)

madman:

The store I got the DVD from is called FAMILY DOLLAR (Not Dollar General, though they are similar type stores) It's not a "dollar" store in the sense you are thinking of..I have seen this DVD set (4 discs) for $5.00 in several Family Dollar locations in my area. There are 15 Family Dollar locations in Miami..and probably many more in the suburbs.

You saved me a Trip to the wrong place

Alright, could you do me a favor? If I go there tomorrow and can't find it, will you send him this collection? He will pay, and we will be happy! No really, thanks for your info!

Wow, I just took a Virtual Tour there!

Pretty Darn Neat. And yes I visited one in BullHead City. Tomorrow I'm headed to 9616 SW 72nd Ave to see if I can help out my friend By the way Batman, how come you didn't offer to help?

I considered offering to help him out, but let me know what you come up with first..The name of the set is TV GUIDE PRESENTS... In a white cardboard case with four DVDS individually packaged in Plastic cases. If all the Family Dollar Stores are the same you shouldnt have much trouble finding it..I Dont expect you go go all over Miami, but you should be within range of 2 or 3 stores. Thanks a lot..
