Odd Liner

There was an interesting liner from the Frosty, Heidi & Frank show on 790 KABC. It said: "Same show. Less fidelity.” FH&F used to be on KLSX 97.1 when it was talk and before that station became KAMP with a CHR format.

But KABC has been broadcasting in HD-AM for several years now (they were one of the first in L.A. to go HD). So what is the liner implying; that the analog signal sounds lousy (because of the severe roll-off to accommodate IBOC), that the show doesn't sound as good on HD-AM as it did on analog FM, an admission that so few Angelenos are listening in HD and are therefore enduring telephone quality audio in order to hear FH&F?

It's also interesting that KABC let this go on air rather than tout the allegedly superior audio of HD.

Bizarre. Did you try calling or e-mailing station management to ask what the liner is about?

No, I just took it at face value. I know some of their fans complained about the team being on AM. Maybe the liner is a response or a reaction to that. For a year these people had no radio gig but were only doing daily podcasts. And from the sound of their press release FH&F just seemed grateful to be back on the air in L.A.

I think I will e-mail KABC and find out what gives.

I would suspect that it's probably just a reference to being on an Ibiquity impaired AM.

Of course, there could be a hidden message. Something like "more music and Les Nessman."

I suspect you're right. The majority of KABC listeners are doing it on an analog radio. And KABC's analog audio is...well, let's put it this way, when the audio quality of a caller through a phone patch equals the in-studio audio, that is not good.

Back when KABC was running AM Stereo the in-studio vocals had a nice richness to them. That richness is gone now.

I have yet to hear from the station.

Along similar lines, my local 97.9 WSIX has an interesting liner that I've only heard during the "best of" program for their morning show. While it goes along with the self-deprecating humor of the morning personalities, I thought it was cool that they had the guts to pick on IBOC.

"Now broadcasting in HD, for absolutely no reason. The Best of the House Foundation, The Big 98 WSIX"
