Odd translator CPs

I noticed on radio locator that K245CD 96.9 recently got a construction permit that would raise power to 250 watts from the current 160 watts but would point the signal north covering mostly Rio Rancho and the Indian resevations but weakening the signal in most of Albuquerque. But there is another permit for K292FW Taos to move to Tijeras and broadcast on 96.7. However the map here shows that the 250 watt signal would cover a mostly unpopulated area at Kirtland air force base. https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/patg?id=K292FW-FX&s=C It would not really reach anyone and it does not even cover its' city of license. It would also be airing KOAZ which already has a good signal on 103.7. Why would KOAZ even need a second tranlator?

Additionally K298BY 107.5 also has a permit which would point the signal more to the south which might help listeners in some areas but might also remove it from Rio Rancho. There would be no power changes which is currently at 55 watts.

The translator in Tijeras is so directional toward ABQ that it doesn't even cover it's city of license according to the FCC maps. Maybe they just want a signal in the canyon where FM reception generally goes to h***.

The translator on 96.9 (which at last listen wasn't on air) may have to have re-adjusted it's pattern because of the LP in Madrid.

Hate to reply to my own reply...

The 96.7 translator was on the air with smooth jazz. The 96.9 translator was on the air as well.

I was parked halfway between the two 102.1 signals. The one that got was totally dead air, but I couldn't call since I cooudn't ID which one it was :-(

The last time I could tune in KQUQ was about a month ago and it was dead air. They were still putting out a signal but nothing on it. So not sure what is going on with them. The translator for KNMM is on air with thier “K-New Mexico” format.

Can't really get anything on 96.7 from the northwest. They may have seen an opportunity to get another signal for 1510 Isleta while creating new opportunities for 103.7 but ended up clashing with KDAZ for the 96.7/9 space. 96.9 has been on for a while airing KDAZ 730 with a mix of religious and right-wing talk. Apparently they still call it “AM 730”. The new pattern would actually move it closer to KMRD-LP but it looks like Madrid would still be outside the blue line and the map. https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/patg?id=K245CD-FX&s=C. However the translators off the crest put out signals that often go further than shown.

I don't understand the western directional pattern for 96.7 unless Vanguard wants to air something else on it. The 103.7 is highly directional towards ABQ metro to the west while listeners in Tijeras, Edgewood and Moriarty are left out. Edgewood has grown like crazy the past decade. I hear ads for Rich Ford in Edgewood on The Oasis! (And in fact, the owner, Dennis Snyder calls up Jeff Young a couple mornings a week to tell listeners about the latest deals on Ford cars.) If the 96.7 had a directional pattern towards the Tijeras and eastward audience, it would make more sense.

Moriarty, Tijeras and Edgewood together have less than 5,000 population.

Tijeras, with 500 people, is in the Albuquerque rated market. The other two are not.

The Albuquerque market does not include Santa Fe County. It is Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties, and there are about 920,000 people there.

I'm pretty sure that the Ford dealer has low overhead in Edgewood, and can do good deals... so they invite folks from ABQ to go visit them.

Being directional away from the market makes no sense at all, mostly because the 96.7 signal is a translator for KOAZ-1510 in Isleta, at the south side of the city of Albuquerque. Being directional away from the "main" signal would expand the coverage beyond the contour of KOAZ, which is not legal. The same applies to 103.7.

Rich Ford is not based in Edgewood, their main dealership is on Lomas and Wyoming with a satellite one in Edgewood. There is more population between Tijeras and Edgewood in some unincorporated areas but the total population is still likely under 10,000 plus who knows how much of that is into smooth jazz.

I was picking up the Oasis on 96.7 but I wonder if that is KMYN out of Grants which serves as the source station for the Santa Fe translator since it may not be legal for an AM to feed an out of market translator. I heard it as "Santa Fe's 95.9 The Oasis" so maybe they are sending a separate feed since 103.7 and 95.9 have different programs in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Also it looks like there are two more applications. One is for KSVA 920 to air on 104.3 in Los Lunas at the site of 106.3, 105.5, and 97.7 which would have a 250 watt signal covering communities south of Albuquerque and limiting KTEG's coverage around there. The other is for KQNM 1550 which already airs on 98.9 in ABQ, to have a signal in Belen at 105.1 outside of KKRG's main range, but they did not appear to fill out any info on it so maybe it will be dismissed.

Yeah, I think KOAZ has separate commercials on the 95.9 feed. However, their webstream is from the 103.7 feed.

Well 96.9 has modified their CP to remain at 160 watts but still cover mostly the north area. KSVA was granted it's permit to air on 104.3 from Los Lunas as K282CD while KQNM will have a new translator at 105.1 as K286CW covering Belen from the west. APS has an application to move it's Santa Fe translator at 90.3 to 91.1 with no other changes claiming disruption from their own station KANM in Grants although that station has always broadcast from that site. Also K271CP was granted it's license despite the interference problems it is causing with KQUQ. I was able to tune it in somewhat yesterday driving through downtown and it was such an awful mess with both signals clashing. This is the radio locator map https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/p...0&lon=-106.60999&locn=Albuquerque, New Mexico which also inaccurately lists the format as Americana which this station certainly isn't. LOL!! It is some kind of Latin format.
