Odd Twist

Here's an odd twist to the HD-Radio vs. internet radio debate:

"WOXY returns to the airwaves in Cincinnati, as WOXY.com partners with Cincinnati Public Radio to simulcast the station on News/Talk WVXU's HD-2 channel, beginning next month."

http://fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=441871

WOXY, of course, has been internet-only for several years. I wonder if this could start a trend of select internet stations being simulcasted on HD-2 and 3 channels. It would certainly be a better programming solution to the dreck FM stations are currently broadcasting on their extra HD channels.

Of course, no radios, no audience. It will be a long, long time before WOXY equals the listenership on HD-R that it has on the internet.

Actually from my talks with several broadcasters one of the major business models is to lease the HD multicast channels to other formats and programers. Meaning that say you could go lease the HD-2 channel from a local station for say $4-6K/months and run it as your personal station. I think this could be a major plus because then someone with an compelling enough format could do so without the major expense of setting up their own radio station and acquiring a license.

Surely you are joking!
In which sizeable market can you lease an HD-2 channel or even a low-fi mono analog SCA subcarrier on a reasonably powerful station that covers the market for $4-6K/month?
Before you engage in wild speculation, call up a few FM stations and try.

I already know of some people that have reported doing such and others that are still in negotiations. Perhaps they are a little smaller areas than say LA, but they are still doing it.

Then these subcarrier users you claim can rent a major market SCA for "$4-6K/month" would greatly benefit by switching from low-fi analog SCA to FMeXtra digital stereo SCA, with equal or better quality and coverage then HD radio, and you might be wise to sell them the FMeXtra radios, instead of bothering with deficient, destructive HD radios.
