Off Topic Messages

I realize the moderation for this board is being handled by other moderators, due to the extreme situation in Southeast Louisiana.

But...are political/topical discussions now on-topic for this board? I'm talking about various threads about local officials, the federal response to the disaster and comments made by a famous TV/religious figure.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I'd rather see these threads moved to the "Off The Air" board, so this board can be used for a crucial exchange of information and ideas about media in Louisiana, its status, the status of people who work in the radio/TV business in New Orleans and elsewhere in the hard-hit state, and other "on topic" messages.

If this board is buried in threads with the 800th political debate on who did what in the hurricane, those messages will see less readers.

I have to second the comments from Old Akronite. I am in Columbus, but I lived in Biloxi for 8 years, and have seen a number of friends and former co-workers on tv... so I have a small personal stake in the disaster.

That said, I sense TJ that you are saying that Louisiana residents are free to use this RADIO board to bash Jesse Jackson because he appeared on TV in Louisiana... Fox News Channel handles this stuff quite well, don't you think? I personally wouldn't mind reading a civil debate on Nagin or whatever, but purely partisan slamming Rev. Jackson belongs on FNC's blog... not a radio board.

Why not use this space to talk about RADIO? They are already having the Republican/Democratic argument about mayor Nagin on the Arkansas radio board... can we get a break from the "conservatism is awesome and liberals suck" stuff please?

And I think I will vomit if I hear one more person say they need Giuliani in New Orleans... 50% of Americans seem to be brain damaged. I think I am joining Bill Maher and becoming Swiss!

I see some of it becauae it does originate soemtimes on Louisiana radio/Tv (such as nagin's attack over WWL) But at a point, it becomes more a political thread than a debate on the media itself here...It degrades the people trying to find info about how to rebuild South Louisiana's radio/TV infrustructure again and what's on here currently now.

I admit, with this national problem, the moderators have given some slack to discussions that normally would have been yanked or moved in a New York Minute but Louisiana and New Orleans right now has moved from the get outta here stage to actually looking right now to rebuild it back stage and some of the finger pointing may need to be seen elsewhere.

One thing I did see on Off The Air that may need discussion here will be about the Saints and possibility about Blackouts etc. to their game in their home market with the home market being unplayable at this time....

OA, I made the same observation awhile back. I will admit I have engaged in some of the political debate, but i've tried to use some restraint. Heck, even the mods are engaging in the debate!

I think it's hopeless.

The Jackson bashing and the Bush bashing belong on the Off the Air board. That said, who is and isn't on the air. i understand that Entercom and CC have combined operations, and the "United Radio Broadcasters of New Orleans" are on WWL and several other stations. Darryl Parks mentioned on WLW that he and a contingent from CC in Cincinnati are on their way to Baton Rouge to assist.

The message below where AM 690 is looking for missing staff members needs to stay near the top, IMO.

OA and gr8oldies (and now me) in the same post!? I must still be on the cleveland board ;)

Anyways, even though I have taken part in some the political discussions on this board, I agree that it's time to stick to radio and TV news and let's move the political discussion somewhere else. I agree about the AM 690 post. Missing people posts should be the expection to the "only radio and tv related posts" rule.

BTW, love your signature gr8oldies ;)<P ID="signature">______________

I waited to a day to see if the thought of posting would pass and it didn't. OA, are you not the king of OT? One can never forget the rants you had on 19 Action news....hmmmmmmmm

Me And My Off-Topic Messages

Hmm!

If you read the Mighty Blog of Fun(tm), that's basically where my "19 Action News" rants went.

And to be quite honest, TV messages on a radio board are generally considered on topic in markets without their own local TV boards here. It's still MEDIA after all, and many of the personalities are on both radio and TV...to list just two, WOIO's sports anchor Chuck Galeti (until recently on WXTM/92.3 mornings) and 19 preseason Browns TV analyst Bob Golic (WNIR afternoon talk host).

I'm not talking about TV messages here being off-topic. In fact, if you read my first message, I even say "radio/TV". Discussions of such things as the status of local TV operations in the New Orleans market is, IMHO, on topic even without the storm's aftermath.

I'm talking about the political stuff, the questions about the federal, state and local response to the disaster, etc. THAT is generally off-topic, IMHO. (Moderators, of course, can step in and say otherwise.) That has nothing to do with my own TV-related messages on the Cleveland board.

Like someone else posted here, I'm willing to give Louisiana residents and those with ties to the region some slack here, and it appears the moderators feel the same way. But I don't want to see this board become the latest home of the Ongoing Left vs. Right Political Struggle ("The president screwed up!" "No, the governor screwed up!"), particularly among those with no interest in talking about the broadcast scene in the Louisiana and Gulf Coast region.

There. One of my long messages again...please indulge. But I hope it explained my viewpoint a little more.
