"Office Pool" which station is CC going to flip in the QC?

Rumors are running rampant as to what CC is up to...
So let's open it up for speculation!
Which of these three stations is CC going to flip
1. Mix 96
2. KUUL 101.3
3. Q 106.5

BONUS
what format will the station or stations be flipped to?

My guess. KUUL is flipped to a CHR format.

Discuss.

If I was to put a bet down on this, it would be 106.5 flipping to 106-5 KISS FM and KUUL tweaking their music (which I think they did a little since going back to regular music after it's X-mas music). just my thoughts, they need to do something!!

I'm going to agree with QCRADIOGUY on this one. I think that Q-106 will do the change. As for KUUL, I like what they are doing but I feel that they have changed the music a little bit since coming back on from the Xmas music. Seems that they have added more 60's and changed some of the stuff that was getting stale

I do agree that another CHR coming into the market will happen. I don't think Mix 96 is going anywhere, but I think what is going to happen is that KUUL will be taking over Q106.5's signal and will do one of those simulcasts for a while....then 101.3 KISS FM will debut. Remember, people do not want to change their dial too far down the dial. Star is strategically placed as the next strongest FM signal down from 96.1. When 98.9 was around, they put B on 99.7. When WLLR was still on 101.3 they had the country station on 99.7. They moved down to 104.9 not too long after WLLR went down that way.

Only problem they have now is this: If they dump Q to essentially go after B, they have the same problem they had with 98.9 when they were on: Do they keep Bob and Tom, who from what I understand has done decent in this market for whatever reason, on the otherwise music intensive CHR in town? They target different kinds of audiences. I think they moved Bob and Tom when they did not because they wanted to really add local talent for their LMA'd 98.9 station, they wanted to protect their show and cut costs elsewhere in the chain. Why not put Bob and Tom on one of their own stations, and charge the owner of the LMA'd station more money to put on local talent? The suits at CC put the costs on their partner, not them, and more profit in their books since they don't have to pay anything since they already own the show.

Moving on, I would like to see an urban station come in, but the market here just isn't there for it. That would be cool, but way too hard to sell.
It would be in CC's best interest to go back after the CHR market in this area again because they could force Cumulus to put their money where their mouth is, and put money into B100 when right now they have no reason to do that, who do they compete against, Star, their own property?

If Cumulus has to compete, and they will for a while, one of them will get out and go elsewhere. But where do they go? Obviously, country, their best opportunity, just does not do well with how powerful WLLR is in this market. They already have Star competing against Mix, 97X will stay the course with Dwyer and Michaels where they are. We have an active/modern rock station in 104.9, CC will not go after that unless they are really gutsy they could with 106.5 and stay out of CHR in the market.

This area is not progressive or have a young enough market to go for a dance station or a rap station or latin station. They won't go for a "Jack" format, they have enough stations playing that stuff now to not really need it here. So what is left? CHR. Go for it, CC, then force Cumulus into a corner to make them spend some money or have to bail out of the format and try to kill off someone else.

Maybe after CC knocks B100 off the market, Cumulus decides to go for a two headed attack at WLLR, flip 99.7 and 93.5 to country, but two different approachs: one goes for the older 80's and 90's country, not the really really old stuff, and the other goes new country, both at the same time. Maybe with a 2-3 share each knocking at WLLR, it can drop them below double digits. Just an idea.

Good comments so far! It seems we are in agreement about the CHR.
Although I find it interesting that the long-shot idea is to go after
the active rock format. It seems what they need are 18-34 numbers,
but why go after B100 and cut their numbers in half? If they did a
modern rock format on a 100,000 watt tower, it would be a win
by default in 18-34 male. I would say the path of least resistance would
make more sense. But it's just an observation on my part.

Squealer, I am with you on this one. My thoughts are KUUL doing the flip. A CHR/pop would do the market some good. But there has to be an investment in a fantastic lineup of jocks and shows. Otherwise it's just another outlet for noise.

well 106.5 is sitting on a 100,000 watt stick and so is cross town 99.7, not sure on each(s) coverage, but to put CHR on a flame throwing 100,000 would be AWESOME!

We still have a week and a half till ratings come out...

I realize the idea of having an active rocker next door to another active rocker on a bigger stick seems like the way to knock 104.9 down seems like a good idea, but look at what happened when they tried putting a 100,000 watts against another 100,000 watts with the country format....a ratings loser on a huge powerful stick.
Same with B100, only reason Cumulus went for it is they knew that the deregulations were coming and that the LMA'd 98.9 would probably be the one sold out of Clear Channels stables. So they put a top 40 format on a 100,000 watt stick, sit back and watch as they sit in 3rd or 4th place in their cluster, with 2 and 3 shares versus 98.9 on a less powerful stick with 7-8 shares. 93 Rock was outperforming B100 for a long time on a lesser stick. Only reason B100 was around was because they knew they had that format lock stock and barrel at some point.
What does Cumulus have in their stable with any kind of ratings that Clear Channel would want to go for BUT B100 now? I predict Rock 104.9 to drop a bit because of the signal they are on now, and Dwyer and Michaels coming on at 97X might impact Dave and Darren some now too.

So, since we all seem to be in consensus on the Top 40, including jmohare, whose log-in is very similar to Jim O'Hare, one of the programmers over at Clear Channel, do you guys think it will happen on 106.5? Also, what does Clear Channel do with Bob and Tom? They put a lot of money and advertisement into the "KUUL morning guys" and the billboards in the area. It almost makes sense that they leave them be and give them a chance to develop an audience rather than dump them this soon.
Although I think it might actually be easier overall to dump 106.5's format and personell at this point, wouldn't it be fitting that the oldies (I'm sorry its not classic hits, its oldies) station switch to Top 40? They would be coming full circle really, since that format is what took out KIIK FM back in the late 80's. Plus, it would probably be switching to a name similar to what it was before as well (KIIK vs. KISS) lol.

Thoughts?

Happy New Year to all in Iowa...I used to be in the market and think I may have some insight into what may happen...

1. CChannel is whacking costs and reducing their profile as they go private. This is reflected in several ways that are obvious: one market manager for Cedar Rapids AND QC, eliminated one of the sales managers, along with the downsizing of local staff on WOC and KCQQ (believe me the "Gunner" is a lot cheaper than Jim Hunter would be).It is all about trimming expenses. That is why they allowed Dwyer & Michaels to go...diminishing returns. Having said that, they are STILL generating $9m in revenue with a lot of expense eliminated.

2. This notion of them HAVING to go CHR is ridiculous. A fragmented CHR market goes against the goal of point one here. The other limitation is that CHR can not generate the cash the being the mkt leader could with Country, A-C, Oldies and Classic hits.

3. If they want to grow and hurt Cumulus, they need to blow up KUUL and go active rock and lure Dave & Darren away from Cumulus to do mornings. Rock 104-9 would be irrelevant without that morning show.

4. Bob & Tom have a new foothold in a market that they didnt have before...B & T never got off the ground in QC due to being miscast on the wrong formats (CHR, Oldies). Now they are in the right place and the mkt had 6 months to make them a habit while D & M were sitting out the non compete. B & T will still be a player in the book--if D & M doesnt deliver historical ratings in this book, Cumulus is in trouble, as they overpaid for that show if that occurs.

It's a possibilty but I don't think CC will get Dave and Darren.
If CC offered them the same money without the management responsibilities,
that would seem more likely.

The situation at 97x is interesting as it will probably be just like Q106.5 used to be where the morning show is the ONLY thing that carried the station with paltry numbers throughout the day.

So far the general concensus has been a new CHR, I've been believing that as well.
It would be a gutsy move to fire up an active rocker that had a harder edge than Rock 104-9
does. But in my opinion, it would be a well rewarded gamble.

Good imaging, playing the new stuff FIRST, D.J.'s that kick ass and a flame throwing stick...
that's a winner.
Just ask Peoria. 105.7 the X was #1 last book 12+

New Rumor

Unconfirmed: The Station Voice for Q106 has been let go.

Haven't they used that guy since the station came on the air?

Lots of talk about format changes but Energy has been speculating that for over half a year now and it's just not happening. I do agree, an urban format would be cool for the QC market if the audience and revenue was there. This is funny that Louisville, KYhas the same CHR formats that were once on 98.9 and 99.7, instead it's 98-9 Kiss FM and 99.7 DJX instead of All Hit 98-9 and B-100 at 99.7. I've listened to all 4 stations so can comment. Never spent much time in the QC area though :( . This format may not do well but I like a variety of formats in any market and there is no smooth jazz station or rhythmic AC station - not even an adult hits format. If anything KCQQ should go adult hits and call themselves "Carl FM." Just a thought. :)

Las Vegas, NV and Denver, CO don't even have a CHR station anymore - why should this market have another one when it's already got one? Personally, I don't care for B-100 much though - I liked All Hit 98-9 much better. When is that Cumulus gonna stream it's QC stations? Clear Channel has never even streamed KUUL or Mix 96 yet either. :(

Wow. I wasn't a fan of the station voice they had before, but I like the new one
even less. I hope it's just a temporary one until they actually flip.
The production on the spots themselves sound good though.

My guess would be if they do a format targeted at persons male or female 18-34
they would need new staff. I can't imagine anyone in the building pulling it off.
