Official: BAS and CC close the deal

The fault does not lie with BAS, where was CC management hiring Nick or anyone else knowing that the station was sold...

It's a classic case of "Pass the Buck". We don't want to be the "Bad Guys". I guess if you still want people to advertise with the stations, you have to take the cowards way out. Here's a thought, man up to your decisions. I've seen this time and time again. It's disgusting!

You're right Rick Bell...it happens all the time. My question is why does it have to happen at all. Why would CC hire people, take them from a job or out of school and not tell them that the stations are for sale or in this case SOLD and let them decide if they want to come on board. In this case it sounds like Nick didn't find out about the sale till after he got hired. That's just plain wrong!

Not defending either side here guys....but in college I was taught Business 101.....educate yourself about a company/business before applying to work there (reference to Nick....it's not like he didn't know the group was for sale). I am sorry for programming/sports/news/on air talents in small markets for the Radio industry continues to change, as most aggressive companies have to in survival mode.....so to read online what might happen or might not....we will see/hear differences come Friday but it will take months to really see the fall out (good or bad). I personally wish the best to everyone and continue in your efforts with the passion that brought you to this business in the first place. Mean while...on a lighter note, if I win the Mega Millions tonight.....one of the first investments I will make is to bring a true local radio station back to the markets that its licensed to serve.....so feel free to send me some resumes boys!

Come Friday when word gets out who was kept & who was let go, THAT's when all the wrongness will be revealed.
as it's looking like more part timers are being kept than full timers Nightfly '61

Friday will be a sad day not just for Sandusky radio, but for the whole city. Everyone deserves much better, and for that, I truly feel sorry.

What CC gave them away for?? 5.2 mill for the 5 that BAS bought. Obviously CPZ and the Findlay FM is basically what they paid for.....
"Gave away" is right on the money. Although CC had the sense to not 'throw-in' WCKY. If they had, we'd have to test the water their drinking in San Antonio.

While $5.2M seems like a steal now, BAS better be careful to not strip them down too much, as many of of us suspect they will. Those stations may not be worth 5.2 a year from now. Time will tell.

And for those CC-Sandusky staffers that may be reading this......good luck Thursday!

Get over yourselves!

Changes suck and getting fired blows, but does the audience really care?

This evening on WCPZ was filled with hints of "the end is near" "it's over soon" "the end of an Era", "the last time".
Oh the drama! Radio geeks get erections over this stuff and it does NOTHING for the audience.

I'm a radio guy. Radio is in my blood, but at the end of the day I'm smart enough to realize it would suck to
walk away from the mic, but the last thing I'm going to do is produce a long painful-to-listen goodbye.

Here were the songs played on WCPZ about midnight.

When will I see you Again Three Degrees
Chris Brown Say Goodbye
Green Day Good Riddance
The Famous and Final Scene Bob Seger.
Na Na Kiss him Goodbye.

Jesus of Nazereth!
Did I miss something? Did they turn the transmitter off forever? Did 102.7 go away?

Yeah, it sucks. Bitch about it on the boards, at the bar and to your buddies, but leave the audience out of it. It makes radio look bad and the last thing we need is another black eye.

As if the the guys working at Callahan Auto parts on the 2nd shift care there are new owners to a radio station coming in at midnight. All they want to do is make the best brake pads, earn some $$ and hear their favorite songs.

Are you kidding me? I think you may be taking listeners forgranted just a bit. I remember the dupe WMMS tried to pull, and as a kid listenting to the radio the second I thought that station was a goner. I did the same thing for WENZ when they flipped from "the End." There's a lot of people who hold WCPZ close to their hearts, and I'm sure a lot heard the end of that station as we know it.

It's this type of thinking that has led radio to exactly what BAS is making these Sandusky stations out to be. Let's all just assume our listeners don't care what, or who we put on the airwaves, and let's see how that goes. I hope we all have career backup plans if that's the case.

The guy had been on-air with WCPZ for almost 15 years, most of them in the Evening slot. So I am guessing he has grown on a few people. Cut him some slack, the guy just lost his job, the same guy that many listeners are now at the bar buying him shots. It's emotional!! Radio could use more of it! (emotion that is, not dj's losing jobs. God please no more dj's losing jobs!)

No Sir, I'm not kidding.

WMMS and Power 108 were well organized, and creative stunts designed to get you to listen. Guess what? It worked.

Tonight was not a stunt, just rather an example of how radio has lost touch with the audience, thinking they care who owns the xmitter or what the station is called.

Sure, WCPZ is special, but guess what? Friday morning or Monday morning, the audience will turn on the radio and still hear the same AC format.

Again, underestimating the listener is a dangerous prospect. It's radio 101 that many corporations still don't get. But I guess it's not up to us, we'll all find out soon enough how these BAS moves affect Sandusky, if at all

I have to agree with you Chris. If the listener is not important, then why have advertisers? Apparently if I were an advertiser, I wouldn't want to waste any money unless there was someone wanting my goods or services. Sure there are button pushers out there, but if you own a radio station, is that something your going to pitch on a sales call? Maybe it sounds stupid, but it is radio 101. Back to the basics if you want to make any money at all.

I don't know. Maybe it's just a dream anymore, but the whole reason I got into this was for the listener, and more and more I see company after company moving away from it, a little more jaded I get. And the company I work for is far and beyond better than most. But then again, there must be something to it if they keep doing it, right?

Chris - You would hope so, but it seems that now a days, nothing is ever good enough. Will it ever change? That is yet to be seen. ???

You bust your butt trying to make it sound huge but still "local", sales people give you great expectations of a possible raise or incentive,or "these new owners sound like they're not going to mess with programming", and what's the payoff? Getting sold & ousted. Hey Baylor for somebody who didn't like what you were hearing you sure were sticking to the frequency like a vulture circling the last of the Night Mix last night, werent you? Talk some sense. If the sound of someone's last stint in radio PERIOD was too agonizing for you, you should've tuned out, or better yet, just tune in tonight to hear something just as annoying (or maybe compelling in your world)...no jock...no funny bits...no entertainment...just NexGen running on auto pilot & a 50:00 wx. Hah! It might as well be XM radio! After years of the whole "it'll be better soon" schpeel, it apparently was the "famous final scene" for local radio in the evening in vacationland. The average listener only "half hears" what they're hearing anyway so I'm sure the gang down at Callahan Auto Parts weren't too bent out of shape. Then you'll be right.

At least they let Nick and Ace say goodbye. Radio One any of the WENZ jocks do so when they took over. IIRC, they literally took out the mics from the studio after the change was revealed on the air, forcing 107.9 to go jockless for a day before the R.E.M. "It's the End of the World as We Know It" 24-hour loop.

For the record, the version of "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss 'em Goodbye)" was a cover by Bananarama.
