Official WALE time clock

I have a great deal of faith in human nature (and the greed of humans who own broadcast properties. ;) So, I would be truly amazed if Peter Arpin and the rest of that ownership group simply lets something as valuable as a station license slip through thier fingers.

It seems much more likely that the "Brigadoon Strategy" will be employed, with the station emerging from the fogs and mists of silence once a year to air something recorded/atuomated for the minimum amount of time required to keep the license "alive", thereby re-setting the "doomsday clock" for another 365 days.

Unless I'm mistaken, I imagine they could keep doing that until the right deal comes along, and they can finally "cash out".

Dighton gets my vote on this one. I'll bet they put it on the air from Burrillville with a genny and automation, just to keep the license.

Dave:

A question for you or anyone else with the engineering or legal knowledge to answer this:

Assuming for a moment that through some act of idiocy and/or bungling, the 990 ownership loses the license, and it gets "deleted" by the FCC...... Would anyone else wishing to start up a "new" station on that frequency be required to meet more stringent rules and regulations regarding interference, etc., than the rules and regs which existed at the old station's beginning in (I think)...1961?

If that were the case, how much more difficult (and expensive) would it be to meet those new, more stringent standards with regard to putting together a "workable" signal pattern which would be competitive in the marketplace?

Marc.
I'll try to answer your questions in one shot. Should 990 go dark, someone could apply for it. I think the protection rules have changed a bit. I do know the old WLKW could send at most 250 watts toward the Canadian border. Not sure what that would entail now; perhaps Scott Fybush, Dan Strassberg, or Dana Puopolo(LA_Guy)could speak to this far better than I could. And you never know who may be interested in the frequency if Arpin lets it go. I'd much prefer Steve "The Troll" Conti's jazz on there rather than some 3d rate dreck...

I think for a lot of us here, Steve Conti would be the sentimental favorite, but my only real hope is that whomever winds up with the frequency is LOCAL, RESPONSIBLE, and COMMUNITY MINDED.

Lord knows we could do without any further consolidation. It's pretty much a 2 cluster market already.

I'm sure I'm not alone in the feeling that the market really could use some sort of independent alternative choice. Let's face it......The Telecom Act of 1996 sure hasn't done this market any favors. :(

If I was independently wealthy and could build "The New 990" I'd make it "MEGA 990 - Providence's Oldies Powerhouse." Music from 1959-1974, except for a speciality Disco show on Sunday Afternoons. Mostly all local. A few syndicated shows including ELVIS ONLY, Dick Bartley, and Goddard's Gold.

If I had the money and desire to build that place back up, I certainly would not load it up with Music programming. I think the audience who tunes into the AM band for music programming has dwindled down to nothing. Also take into account WALE's weird signal pattern. I wouldn't take nice music and ruin it by putting it on a static filled AM frequency. Not nearly enough people would listen. That's why they made FM.

But what I would do is turn it into a talk station with the most incredibly shocking jocks I could find. People like you've never heard before doing all kinds of wacky radio. It would be so different than anything else out there that people wouldn't be able to stay away. Live interviews where the host takes a wireless mic out on the street and starts interviewing nutty people. Homeless people, crack addicts or just your run of the mill weirdos. The station would also create game shows that the audience can play along with. Give away some cheap prizes too. I would also create some wild promotions to get the word out. Things like Bikini car washes with station banners all over the place. We could also organize a freak festival where all kinds of weirdos could come and gather for food and fun times. Get some oddball bands too and broadcast from there for a weekend. A few select freaks could have their own show. I'm talking about totally off the wall ideas to make it the most interesting radio station to exist anywhere.

I would name the station SHOCK 990. The place where you can hear ANYTHING! I already know what many of you are saying though. I've lost my mind. Well that's OK. Take a listen to the selection of bland stations on your dial. It's about time someone like me lost their mind. This city needs it~

You know what else? Most of you would tune in every single day.

I like what I hear...Sounds a whole lot more entertaining than what would happen if Salem, the K-LOVE people, or some other second or third tier group owner got thier hands on the license.

Sounds like a good strong antidote to the raging case of on-air boredom infecting the market.

And......Yes, I would probably tune in every single day. :)

Point of notice....today is 8/15...that would put us 2 months and 4 days passed the day that will change RI radio forever.....the salaries must be racking up big time on N main st with nothing to sell.......Ha! ::)

That's not financially realistic. How are you going to pay all these local jocks? I doubt you've spent much if any time in the radio business. With satellite radio, Ipods, CD's and more no one is going to listen to music on AM. AM is an information band now, whether we like it or not.
The "Shock" idea from another poster sounds like a damn good idea.

I remember Geoff Charles interviewing a bunch of bikini babes in a hot tub outside the Westminster Mall studios when he was at 990. So it could be done...and the right staff could make the station go.

What!!!......You mean all these people actually get PAID??? Don't they "love radio" so much, that they'll PAY THE STATION to do it??

OOPS!!!......That was the Battaglia-era WALE, wasn't it? ;D

Dave, How about the September mornings (usually Friday mornings) when he'd get up on the roof and start rapping on windows of the J&W dorm rooms at about 7am after the Lupo's and Living Room parties (not to mention Keg Room & Recess parties) from the Thursday night before....that was great radio for us insiders!

That was classic stuff! aUsed to love listening to Rudy Cheeks as well in the afternoon.....

At this point, I'm not sure which situation is more pathetic:

990 being off the air, OR

WARL 1320 being ON THE AIR.

With Buddy's comeback official, WALE is going to have to come up with plan B. Big Ange, Tom Isuzu, & the bunch aren't going to cut it. Big programming pow-wow at the Manton Avenue Wendy's expected soon.

If WALE comes back, will the nutjobs on 1320 go there ??? LOLOL
