OH GOD WEATHER CHANNEL

On some cable systems there is a sister service called "WeatherScan", Time Warner does not offer it, but should for those who doesn't like the direction "The Weather Channel" has headed, it's a shame a network that John Coleman created has come to this!

That's exactly where we turn when we want to see a quick forecast, radar shot or what the temperature is. Although people can get a lot of this info on-line, not everyone is constantly connected. And, despite how you see everyone playing games and watching movies on their smart cellphones, that sort of service can be quite expensive. So, the Weather Channel could still perform an important service. Unfortunately, it has chosen to pare that back significantly. So, when i need weather info, I tune to WeatherScan first. Too bad it's on the digital tier of our system.

The network's low point is "Wake Up with Al," no doubt.

I'm conflicted as the whether their low point is "Wake Up with Al" (which is just awful) or the airing of movies. I lean toward the latter basically because they're tossing away their credibility by spending all night on Friday night repeatedly airing the likes of "Groundhog Day". Yes, a good movie - but then again I would be just as critical as I would be if CNN was airing it.

The whole idea is absurd and smacks of "corporate group think". Based on some of the decisions we've seen NBC-Universal make in the past couple of years, they must have some real buffoons making these programming choices.

It's all moving to co-branding. I guess that's "group think" at its furthest point.
Saturday night, I saw seven minutes of the abbreviated NBC News.
Lester Holt I think it was talked to some local Mississippi affiliates, the Weather Channel, and and a Telemundo reporter in those seven minutes, with a couple for commercials.

Two words: Jeff Zucker. ::)

:sigh:

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We're talking about a website that happens to have a cable channel, not a cable channel that happens to have a website -- a fact that wasn't true ten years ago. Unfortunately, it's pretty clear that NBC still doesn't get it... and neither do some of you.

If you're more upset about the cable channel showing movies than you are about the website being in need of a complete overhaul to bring it closer to 2010, you're barking up the wrong tree.

I live in the Jackson, MS area and the weather maps were on every channel, but wasn't really paying much attention too it because I was on the computer. I didn't even know about the tornado in Yazoo City until later that afternoon. I just heard the classic line "It sounded just like a big old freight train" BTW, one local reporter will sometimes fish for that sound bite after a tornado. If the person doesn't say it on his own, he will sometimes ask the tornado victim "could you describe what the tornado sounded like?" Just once I'd like to see someone refuse to take the bait and give him some bogus answer just to annoy him. Of course it won't make the montage they will use for a news promo for the next six months.
We had a tornado in this area about a month ago and people said it did not sound like a train. It sounded like a plane.

There was another tornado that sounded like a train ...

The inherent problem with the The Weather Channel is not documentaries or even running movies. The problem is weather, with a few extreme exceptions, is LOCAL. A national weather channel can't provide local weather coverage for thousands of counties around the country. Yes, local on the 8's is a nice feature, but it is just a drop in the bucket. If I'm in the Rockies, I could not care less that folks are roller blading in their shorts in Baltimore. The problem becomes more evident every year as technology brings any weather information we want to us immediately and on demand. The weather channel is becoming completely irrelevant. So I don't blame them for trying new things, even though I have been one of those complaining about the docs and movies. IMO, they need to blow it up, rename it, and try something completely different. What that is, IDK.

Certainly, the internet has brought its challenges for cable news and weather stations. However, it is frustrating to want to see the weather in the Southwest and you get a documentary on the Air Florida crash in 198? -- nearly 30 years ago. Since I was about to get on an airplane, I turned off the Weather Channel VERY quickly and got on the computer.

Exactly, and if even TWC is in forecast-mode, the chances of them getting to your region anytime soon is remote, especially if there is a line of storms in a more populated area.

I too despise what NBC-U has done to TWC, but as I mentioned on a similar post, NBC-U wanted TWC for one reason only: weather.com

Don't forget the old thing that's black and white and "read" all over...

And it won't be long before they tank that, too...

Viva wunderground.com. ;D

Here's a new one: now you can literally "Wake Up with Al" (or Stephanie Abrams)...the show has a freakin' iPhone app where you wake to the sound of either voice ???.

And ironically it's just like everything TWC does now, because it's rated one star by users because the thing doesn't actually work. Can't they focus on...forecasting the weather anymore?

I can think of better things Stephanie can do to wake me up besides talking to me! ;D

But not through an iPhone app. ;)

Yup. Now if only they'd relaunch it with a new design. :sigh:

Now the girl, and i say girl because they have not said their name nor been captioned since I've been watching, just said,

"My arm hairs are standing up (holds her arm in the air) thinking about these storms"

Coulda been worse...They could have brought in Chris Matthews to say the storm gave him a thrill up his leg.

It's funny we are complaining how lacking TWC is for forecasts, think how irrelevant weather in newspapers has become! Yesterdays high, today's forecast that was probably put together the day before, etc. Another reason newspapers are dying. Although I do enjoy the neat colors in USA Today! 8)
