Oh No! The Sound is blowing more hot air

Anyone see the "message" from Andy Chanley of the Sound in LAradio today? ::)

Basically Andy said that "experts" say a station can only be successful by playing several songs in repetition. He went on to say The Sound was made for true music listeners.

I love music but this is ridiculous (notice I didn't say The Sound). No ratings to speak of and no money coming in. It's time to sink the ship.

I saw that Andy Chanley "letter" yesterday forwarded to me in an e-mail from a friend who is still on The Sound's mailing list. Since I am now persona non grata with them, I'm sure they have long ago removed me from their mailing list. I found it especially funny that they e-mailed Don Barrett as a "listener/fan" i.e. part of the 'mass' e-mailing.

Two statements in the e-mail really stood out:

"The "experts" say radio stations can only be successful these days if they play a handful of hit songs... over and over."

Yet the ongoing complaint had been the repetition of the same classic rock songs or the repetition of the same one or two cuts from acts that are not considered classic rock. I say "had been" since there is no longer a forum available for complaints...prolly why it was 86'd ;D

"a station that takes risks by playing more than just hit singles"

Ah yes the ol' 'taking risks' that The Sound is/was famous for ........

They should do themselves a favor and instead of TALKING about how good they are, they ought to start actually BEING good.

Don't tell us that you know what we want and then talk to us like saccharine Stepford people on Valium, it's insulting.
NOBODY TALKS THAT WAY!

I'm giving you that advice for free!

What he says is true, but if you're in the Sound Management that statement is a contradiction! Stations like Indie 103.1 are considered daring radio, radio for real music lovers. The Sound is...uhh...obviously not that. 27th in 25-54, come on! You can't boast about anything if you're in The Sound's position. Great signal but crappy music, crappy DJ's and crappy revenue

Andy's message makes him look like the Don Quixote of LA Radio - crazy man tilting at windmills.

And to prove it, when I tuned in for a few minutes yesterday, he was going on about the joys and wonders of the clicks and pops derived from playing the album sides off of vinyl.

Hey Andy, if the vinyl fidelity is so great, why don't you go with it full time? That pure, clean, digital sound one gets from CDs and MP3s is so joyless to everyone, they really do want their music to sound like Rice Krispies in the morning. Jeez.

Album Sides Wednesday is my favorite special show on KSWD. I love listening to vinyl! You can't beat the warmth and imaging of vinyl.

I can't wait for the KMET Day! I am going to record the entire day.

SuperRadioFan and I have discussed the problems with KSWD on several occasions. When I first began listening to them, their playlist was excellent! I was hooked!! Over the past several months, KSWD has taken a nose dive.......so sad. Maybe they will adopt the KMET playlist and attitude after July 10th!

I was going to buy an HD radio, but the problem is that they are just small portable units and I want an HD radio that I can hook up in my studio. If they make anything studio or home stereo ready, then I will buy it.

I don't know if "nose dive" is an accurate depiction. It should be noted that prior to several months ago their ratings were challenged to get to a 1.0, but the last few ratings are 1.1; 1.4; 1.2. And you know why.... They are an AOR station now, any resemblance to Adult Alternative is just a coincidence.

If by the "KMET playlist" you mean they're going to play the best CURRENT rock? They're going to concentrate on music by active bands that are relevant to the times? What a HUGE change that will be!! I've been hoping for a year that the Sound would become a progressive, innovative station like KMET was!! I mean, they can't possibly expect us to believe that just playing 30 year old songs by bands that haven't been together (or alive) in decades with a DJ that sounds like Jeff Gonzer's grandfather would be a reincarnation of the Mighty Met, COULD THEY ???

I wouldn't hold my breath, my friend ::)

I meant that their quality of music play has taken a nose dive. I wasn't referring to ratings. I don't have a problem with KSWD being an AOR station at all. I just don't like that they are not a current AOR station. Yes, that is what I meant by adopting the KMET playlist. Current album rock would be awesome! And if they would adopt the swagger and I-don't-give-a-shit attitude that KMET had, that would be nice too!! ;D

OC, I'm not trying o be a dick here, although I'm always a Dick, but what exactly do you mean by "...the warmth and imaging of vinyl?"

I am referring to the warm, analog sound and the stereo imaging of original vinyl recordings. Vinyl does sound better than CD.

McIntosh, along with several other high end manufacturers, sells receivers capable of receiving HD broadcasts.

okay thanks, I will look into it.

Most of the time but not always the case. There are hundreds of CDs out there that also contain warm analog sound and stereo imaging. Many of those CDs are even considered audiophile quality.

That must be my problem because I don't buy CD's.
