The truth is today's commercial radio is nothing short of a joke as a whole. There are a few shining spots on the dial here and there, but in general it's only a hull of what good radio of even just 10 years ago was. 10 years ago was only a shell of what radio was 20 years before that. The sad truth is radio has been dumbed-down to the point that consumers have little other choice than to either endure it or try some other source like XM or an iPod.
Amen, brotha! WKY and KOMA were Top 40 giants back in the day. KJ-103 carried on the legacy in the 80s with great talent and KZBS had a fantastic line-up, too.
Personally, I think that KXY sounds really good these days. I prefer it to the screaming, hyper delivery of the Twister personnel. I'm sure the two stations are tweaked that way to distinguish themselves from one another, but I can't listen to KTST for any length of time without needing an aspirin.
We might as well face it, the glory days of radio are over. As bad as things sound now, I can only see things getting worse.

KTOK is lucky not to have a strong competitor.
I'll have to disagree with you on this point. The NPR station out of Norman features excellent programming and it's a definite alternative to the conservative nature of KTOK. However, it splits its signal over two different frequencies, depending on where you live in the metro. So, it has issues in terms of signal strength, but it is a GREAT sounding station.
