The truth is today's commercial radio is nothing short of a joke as a whole. There are a few shining spots on the dial here and there, but in general it's only a hull of what good radio of even just 10 years ago was. 10 years ago was only a shell of what radio was 20 years before that. The sad truth is radio has been dumbed-down to the point that consumers have little other choice than to either endure it or try some other source like XM or an iPod.

Amen, brotha! WKY and KOMA were Top 40 giants back in the day. KJ-103 carried on the legacy in the 80s with great talent and KZBS had a fantastic line-up, too.

Personally, I think that KXY sounds really good these days. I prefer it to the screaming, hyper delivery of the Twister personnel. I'm sure the two stations are tweaked that way to distinguish themselves from one another, but I can't listen to KTST for any length of time without needing an aspirin.

We might as well face it, the glory days of radio are over. As bad as things sound now, I can only see things getting worse.

KTOK is lucky not to have a strong competitor.

I'll have to disagree with you on this point. The NPR station out of Norman features excellent programming and it's a definite alternative to the conservative nature of KTOK. However, it splits its signal over two different frequencies, depending on where you live in the metro. So, it has issues in terms of signal strength, but it is a GREAT sounding station.

"JournalGuy:
Thanks for the instant feedback OKCGUY. Seems like you see/hear what I did. I will check out channel 5 before I head down the turnpike. Lots of tornado coverage today. All way north but very interesting to watch."
On that subject, did it seem that 9 was having switching problems due to a greenhorn at the controls? I felt sorry for Gary because the bad job the switcher in MC was doing was making them look REALLY stupid on the air. They sure had some neat chopper shots of the tornados doing their thing though. K4 had a rent-a-chopper so they were rather limited on good video but otherwise 4 seemed to be on top of their game last night. They caught several spin-ups that 9 missed somehow. I think there were a few times that 9 had something on the chopper live when the other two where still trying to determine what was going on because the tornado was rain-wrapped. It was interesting that the only stations that were simucating TV were doing channel 4. (94.7 96.1 101.9 102.7 89.7 99.7 88.5 and 91.7 for a bit) I'm sort of shocked that Renda didn't see fit to interrupt that boring OU stuff to put 9 on 1520 at least. I'm also a bit supprised that 96.9 didn't carry 5. The most supprising thing is KSPI-FM in Stillwater continued some stupid OSU game right though all the storm without regard to the fact the storm was in their immediate area. I suppose it shouldn't be too big of a supprise as the MaHaffey bunch is from Kansas and micromanages that mess by remote control from up there.

"I agree with you that OKC is a cattle town. Reminds me of Ft. Worth."

There is a striking similarity to the two isn't there?

"Tulsa is more like a small Dallas. Tulsa seems to have some class and culture too." They most definately do have their similarities. On a down-side they are similar in that both Dallas and Tulsa will spend money on the arts and civic beautification but truditionally they will let infrastructure fall totally apart before spending money on it. The latest downtown project and the hard time getting it funded in Tulsa seems to me they might have turned a corner on that subject though. Tulsan's might be getting a bit tired of the chugholes..

Tulsa roads seem to be getting better. Maybe my imagination. Weekend radio in OKC is even more boring. Nobody is doing anything fun this weekend. I do like the Saturday night show on Mix. It is fun to listen to while you hang out on a Saturday night. OKC radio, not so much. The Twister does sound good the more I listen. KOMA and KRXO are good too. Those are my 3 OKC picks. KRXO seems to go a little deeper into the library compared to other Classic Rock stations. I like that too. KKNG is a joke. It is like a parody of a country station.

l know I should be having fun, but this is fun. Traveling and learning that our stations sound pretty good.

You are correct about DFW radio. Heard it a few weeks back and not very good. I was surprised to hear Lex & Terry. Thought they were done. They we on 1430 in TULSA and I listened to them when I couldn't take any more MDG.

Could I borrow your PIKEPASS? I am heading home. (What a rip off!)

Hahaha! Yeah.. The Turner Turnpike is the greatest rip of all time. The promised us that it would be free after it was paid for which should have been somewhere around the early 70s at the latest yet we still pay and pay and pay. LOL!
