I heard from a good source that the old offices/studios at 400 Radio Road will be coming down soon. The building is in bad shape and the transmitters were move out long ago to another building.

Sad news for those of us who listened to the stations back when they were out there in Oakdale.

Some may think this sounds ludicrous, and maybe it is. But, wouldn't it be a good idea if someone who had the resources would buy that building and make it into a museum of Charlotte broadcasting history? Take what Kahuna has done with thatwasradio.com as a "springboard" and maybe make a room for each of the big stations to have its memorabilia. Just a thought...

Please keep us posted as to when they might destroy history out there. I am so glad I made it out there last year to take the pictures I have on my site, I just wish I could have gotten inside to take a few pics. I talked to one of the jocks at WSOC-FM recently and he said there is stuff growing up through the floors in that building, he said it is mushrooms, LOL.

Hey, Kahuna. I went to your site but found only information for Z-100 and the WBT tribute page. How about directions to the other material, it sounds interesting.

Mike;
That's the entrance page, look for the text link in the middle that says "CLICK HERE TO ENTER THAT WAS RADIO", it will then take you to a sub-page about Fred Hardy's passing, then click on "PROCEED ONTO THAT WAS RADIO", and then you'll be able to scroll down and see a drop-down menu of all the other stations, including WROQ with the pics of those old studios.
It's set up like that because I originally set it up years ago as a Z-100 tribute site only, but it has grown over the years, let me know if it is too confusing, maybe it's time to change it.

Not a bad thought but the building is in very bad shape. I think it's best if I don't go into detail here but it's not healthy to go in there.

Yes that's what I heard too. Part of the roof fell in and they never bothered to fix it. So down it comes. I never got inside in the good old days but it looked nice from the outside.

The timeframe I heard was 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for the nice job you do on the site. Everyone here should check it out.

Great site Kahuna, and those building pix are sad. I even rode by there (the radio ranch) last time i was in Charlotte in October of last year.

Late 60's, maybe 1967, my sister won tix on Big Ways to BWB (Big Ways Birthday Party) to see the Monkees. She won them from Long John Silver! We went to the building to pick up the tickets. This was before they expanded. Later in high school, we went out and visited the station,I think Scott Slade was on in the afternoon. Even later, I got to work there.

I know am a fool, but that place has loads of memories for me. I heard tales too. Boo Baron told me at night, back in the Big Ways days, the jocks (or maybe just him) and listener would jump the fence at Camp Wayside and skinny dip. Later, in '87, John Hill (Johnny Magic now WXXL Orlando) had some wild overnight happenings.

I remember even going back to work at what was then WAQQ, and the office in the back, that I knew as Mr. Wards office, had a trash can collecting water from the roof leaking, it was bad even then.

WOW...i have been told it was going to happen for the past few years, but this is really it huh?

I hope someone takes pictures or video. I doubt I will make it there from Florida. I would if I could...

Now, aren't the towers for AM 610 still there and in use? I remember stopping by there 3-4 years ago, and I believe the sign out front still had "WEDJ" visible on it--from "The Edge" era.

Yes the towers are still there inclding a tall stick that holds the 95.1 aux antenna. A new concrete transmitter building has been built on the property and some of the CBS FM stations may have aux transmitters at the site in time.

At this point I think it would be too costly to save the building, too much damage has gone unchecked causing more damage.

I really like the country setting out there, yet it's not far from the city.

Kahuna:
I hadn't seen your site in awhile. That's a great pic of you and Fred. He WAS a wonderful human being. A big help to me by giving me access to a large part of PAMS back in the 70s when I was working on my senior thesis.

My friend collects LPs and is like always on the lookout for those old wooden radio station LP shelves. they were maple or pine and have these dividers in 'em so the records dont flop over. theyre like 7 ft tall by 3 ft wide. if anybody has some at any of these old radio studio sites i might know somebody whos interested ~Zoe
