Great site Kahuna, and those building pix are sad. I even rode by there (the radio ranch) last time i was in Charlotte in October of last year.
Late 60's, maybe 1967, my sister won tix on Big Ways to BWB (Big Ways Birthday Party) to see the Monkees. She won them from Long John Silver! We went to the building to pick up the tickets. This was before they expanded. Later in high school, we went out and visited the station,I think Scott Slade was on in the afternoon. Even later, I got to work there.
I know am a fool, but that place has loads of memories for me. I heard tales too. Boo Baron told me at night, back in the Big Ways days, the jocks (or maybe just him) and listener would jump the fence at Camp Wayside and skinny dip. Later, in '87, John Hill (Johnny Magic now WXXL Orlando) had some wild overnight happenings.
I remember even going back to work at what was then WAQQ, and the office in the back, that I knew as Mr. Wards office, had a trash can collecting water from the roof leaking, it was bad even then.
WOW...i have been told it was going to happen for the past few years, but this is really it huh?
I hope someone takes pictures or video. I doubt I will make it there from Florida. I would if I could...
