Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

The oldest tape I recall having in my household featured Peter Pan with Mary Martin. Wikipedia says that NBC re-aired its 1960 telecast (the last of three different versions of the production) several times, but the only post-70's airings were in March 1989 and March 1991 before Disney Channel acquired the rights to it. Our tape had to be the 1989 airing off NBC, because it had traditional commercials, one of which was (coincidentally?) a Peter Pan Peanut Butter commercial featuring Mark Linn-Baker, and another was the classic Raisin Bran "Everyone deserves two scoops" commercial, both of which can be found on YouTube and are dated 1989. Also, the version of Peter Pan on our tape edited out a dance sequence where Liza, the Darlings' maid, flies to Neverland and dances with the animals. Wikipedia notes that this scene was edited for time beginning with the 1989 airing.

The tape had bits and pieces of other shows or possibly TV airings of movies, but I have no idea what they were of. I re-watched Peter Pan countless times and would sometimes bring the tape to friends' houses to watch it with them. Unfortunately, while holding the tape outside a friend's house, I dropped it on the pavement of their driveway and it broke. Thankfully, I found the official VHS (released by the now-defunct company Goodtimes Home Video) at a yard sale not too long after that, and of course, it can be found on YouTube nowadays, and it was released on DVD as well. The earlier two productions were also remastered for a Blu-Ray release.

Another week of tapes! One at a thrift store I've never been to before, and several at a yard sale.

Thrift store (they don't open often. Cluttered and full of stuff everywhere you look. Hundreds of VHS tapes and very few blanks. They usually 'throw them out'.)
Tape 1 - Gallagher: We Need a Hero and part of 'Billy Bathgate' (1991) taped off Showtime 1/22/1993 with promos (Free Preview Weekend). Unknown T-120, quite old, from the mid '80s.
Two others I found were duds - one movie without pay-TV promos and another copied from the rental in SLP with NOTHING afterwards

Yard sale
Tape 2 - 'Days of Thunder' (1990) taped off HBO 7/11/1991 with promos. TDK T-120
Tape 3 - 'Threesome' (1994) and part of 'Sleep with Me' (1994) taped off Showtime 2 in August 1995 with about five minutes of promos in between. Memorex T-120
Tape 4 - 'Sommersby' (1993) taped off HBO2 in October 1994 with promos afterwards. Scotch PHG T-120
Tape 5 - 'Top Gun' (1986) taped off Cinemax on 12/7/1991 with promos. JVC T-120
Tape 6 - 'There's Something About Mary' (1998) taped off Direct Ticket PPV on 3/27/1999; this is followed by a long phase of channel surfing on the DirecTV receiver - CNN International programming on CNN (202); a couple minutes of ESPNEWS (207), and settles on a Sanford & Son rerun in progress on TV Land with commercials; rest of tape is blank. Gemini T-120
Tape 7 - 4 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show taped off TV Land in October 2000 with commercials. Fuji T-120
Tape 8 - Dancing with the Stars season 2 finale, Grey's Anatomy, KATU 2 News at 11, Ebert & Roeper, The Tim McCarver Show, Alias rerun and a couple of late-night 'making wealth'-type infomercials taped off KATU/ABC 2/26-27/2006 with commercials. Sony T-120
Just one dud from here, a tape with 'JFK' that went blank after the movie.

Next week could be a real doozy. There's an estate sale coming up in Terrace Heights (will be posted on Craigslist) with years and years worth of Indianapolis 500's on VHS, and out in Sunnyside, there's another estate sale at a 3-story house...the ladies who were doing one in West Valley this weekend (no tapes found) told me 'it's got everything you love'. Welp, how many are we going to get out there I wonder? ;)

Wheres the house listed at with the tapes.

Wouldn't know re: Indy 500 tapes. Probably '90s. I have to look for myself. I already have the full '91 broadcast and part of the '87. The older the better...always looking for the elusive commercial break.

Last few days have been a doozy. Still adding tapes to the overall collection. Ellensburg flea market on Wednesday, then two estate sales in Sunnyside and Terrace Heights today! Great stuff overall.
No INDY 500s...the estate sale owner got them confused...they were NASCAR races like the Daytona 500, at Terrace Heights. Not listing addresses just because.

Great stuff coming soon! :)

Oh I would have been interested in getting the 2008 and 2006 daytona 500s, is there any chance youd still be able to get them?

I have tapes of the 1990, 1994 and 2003 Daytona 500 races as well. The one I have from 1990 doesn't have commercials, the one I have from 1994 is incomplete and only includes a couple of commercial breaks and the one I have from 2003 only has the first two hours of the race since it was taped in SP mode, but does have commercials.

Picked up a few more tapes this past weekend. Not all of them were all that great this time though.

Strongsville garage sale:
TAPE 1: Last 30 minutes of Panic (2000), In the Gloaming (1997) and part of Something to Talk About (1995) taped from HBO2 in May 2002 with promos in between. Fuji T-160.

Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds flea market vendor--most of these tapes didn't have labels and, evidently, it took this person long enough to upgrade to a DVR:

Next weekend is an estate sale in Independence that looks like it could be pretty promising based on the photos in the listing for it on estatesales.net. For you local radio buffs, that's the same Cleveland suburb where several of the Cleveland market's top radio stations are headquartered, specifically those owned by iHeartRadio and Salem Communications. The listing says the homeowner was the owner of a local restaurant and bar--would be interesting to find out which one.

No doubt, if I ended up finding nothing but 2012 stuff on old stock tapes, I'd sell 'em as blank most likely. That doesn't happen too often. Usually the newest tapes I'll find are in the late 2000s range - past the end of prerecorded VHS. I usually have a cut off of around 10 years, so 2009 is about as new as it gets on my YT channel.
I listed 34 tapes on eBay last night, putting up 40 more at the end of this week or early next week, then a smaller lot after that. Probably 80+ tapes to sell in the near future. Will be nice to get some space, I'm hoping, at least if the bids start flying!

Do you have an ebay scott would be interested in some of the 2012 tapes.

Okay, as promised, here's the full rundown of the tapes I found at yard sales last week, minus the "duds."

Yard sale #1 (the same house in Brunswick I went to last time):

I think WAGA aired George and Alana in Atlanta

There's a couple more that I haven't checked yet, including one with Northern Exposure 1993 written on the label.

Didn't do as well as you did this week. The estate sale in Independence didn't have as many used blanks as I thought they would. I ended up buying three and two of them ended up being Greek movies copied from rental tapes made by a company called Greek City. The third one was about 10-15 minutes of what looked to be a Greek soap opera. I tried translating the title on Google, but couldn't come up with a result. Strangely, on one of the movie tapes I got, during the copyright warning screen at the beginning, I could faintly hear the song "Georgy Girl" by the Seekers playing in the background before the movie started. I'm wondering if whoever copied the movie had somehow picked up a radio frequency as they were recording...weird.

The Lincoln Highway Buy-Way yard sale is this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but I'm not sure I'm going to make it out there this year.

Picked up six tapes from the Litchfield Flea Market on Sunday, all from the same vendor. This vendor actually had several boxes full of these tapes among the rest of the merchandise he had in the tent he set up and he told me that he actually had more in his truck. I probably would have gotten a few more if I had more money with me, but here's what I ended up finding.

TAPE 1: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Seattle Supersonics taped from SportsChannel Ohio on 1/4/1995 with commercials; most of the second half of the CompUSA Citrus Bowl and first half and halftime show of the Rose Bowl taped from WEWS on 1/2/1995 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 2: Stalin (made-for-TV movie) taped from HBO on 11/21/1992; Witness (1985) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1992; three episodes of Tales from the Crypt taped from HBO circa 1992; partial episodes of That's Amore and One Day at a Time taped from WOIO in November 1992 with commercials. Focal T-120.

TAPE 3: Most of Game 1 of the 1995 American League Championship Series taped from WEWS on 10/10/1995 with commercials; most of Game 2 of the 1995 ALCS taped from WEWS on 10/11/1995 with commercials. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 4: Super Bowl XXIV taped from WJW on 1/28/1990 with commercials; postgame coverage of the 1990 AFC Championship, episode of Babe Winkelman's Good Fishing and most of Channel 3 News at 6:00 taped from WKYC on 1/14/1990 with commercials; most of NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and partial broadcast of Hard Copy taped from WKYC on 12/6/1989 with commercials. JVC T-120.

TAPE 5: Comic Relief VI and part of Deadlock (1991) taped from HBO on 1/15/1994 with promos in between. Polaroid T-120.

Tape 6 had one of the games of the 1995 American League Division Series taped from WKYC with commercials, but I may or may not look at this one in its entirety because of a squeaking sound my VCR makes when fast-forwarding and even when just playing back the tape. No abnormal noises when it rewinds the tape though.

Some extra notes/thoughts:
Many of the tapes this flea market vendor was selling had movie titles written on the labels with a few sports tapes as well. I was more interested in the latter due to the fact that the movies probably would have been recorded from premium channels without any commercials or promos.
I have a feeling Tape 2 originally contained an unscoped, six-hour aircheck of WOIO from November 1992 ranging from Fox prime time programming to the late night hours. Tape starts with a few seconds of In Living Color before it cuts to the HBO movies, and in between the last two Tales from the Crypt episodes was a left-over snippet including a 1-900 hotline commercial and the start of the end credits of Simon & Simon. Would have been interesting to see what else WOIO was showing in the wee hours.
I wonder if Tape 4 originally had an unscoped aircheck of WKYC afternoon and evening programming from 12/6/1989. If so, it likely would have started with Another World, then Days of Our Lives, Divorce Court, The People's Court, Inside Edition, A Current Affair, Channel 3 News at 6:00 and, as was still shown, NBC Nightly News and the first segment of Hard Copy.

Wow! You found Super Bowl XXIV *with* commercials. Patience paid off.
And the 'That's Amore', even partial, is just crazy rare. Luca Barbareschi, an Italian man who starred in a bunch of no-name Italian films, was the host of that relationship game show which in most markets, was either on the cheapest independent in town or thrown to 2AM in markets that didn't have a C-grade independent. It had just as much success as Bill Cosby's You Bet Your Life revival, come to think of it! Meaning...nessuna.

Went through a tape from an estate sale last Friday (West Valley area) and it was a full broadcast of the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade taped off HGTV with commercials, most aired prior to all the festivities. Nothing else on that TDK tape and it dated back to at least the early '90s.

Let me know if youd be interested in selling the tape 3 with the alcs games as i collect footage from old stadiums like the kingdome.

Another small score from the Value World store in Middleburg Heights yesterday.

TAPE 1: Most of an episode of I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here taped from WJET in Erie on 3/2/2003 with commercials; part one of Salem Witch Trials (CBS miniseries) taped from WSEE in Erie on 3/3/2003 with commercials. Sony T-160.

TAPE 2: Starts with about an hour of an extremely scrambled aerial signal of an unknown TV station, content was barely identifiable, all I could tell was it was a recording of two back-to-back sitcoms--had commercials, but I couldn't recognize many of them with the scrambling; then reverts to part of The Bachelor: The Women Tell All and partial season finale of The Bachelor taped from WEWS in Cleveland on 4/25/2002 with commercials. Sony T-120.

TAPE 3: Three episodes of Hawaii Five-O taped from WTVU/WBNE in Hartford (now WCTX) circa 1996, no commercials intact except for a few station ID bumpers, could tell these were copied from other tapes. Maxell T-160.

Do you sell any of your tapes?
