Oldies 106.7 - Your Impressions?

One more recommendation for 106.7: They should carry Imus in its entirety until 10 a.m., instead of cutting out at 9 a.m.

Why play an extra cut of Seals & Kroft, when you can carry another hour of a legendary air personality with ample opportunities for carrying a higher inventory and generate more revenue? (you can play more commercials during talk programming without anybody noticing!)

Unless he has changed his ways, the 9:00 hour was always just a throway hour. Not much live just replay mostly of bits earlier in the show. I hear they are gunning for the "#2 Listen while you work station"

Isn't that what 105.7 use to do when they carried that MJ guy?

I dunno... this morning about 8:45 I heard him promo a guest for "the next hour".

That obviously means I was listening. Lately, Neal Boortz' Atlanta-only half-hour has gotten a bit stale. Neal is obviously saving much of his material for later. I've started trying Bill Bennett and Imus. I'm OK with Imus' interviews and guests, but I don't care for the attempts at comedy. Maybe the comedy plays well in NYC, but it seems lame to me.

Well, if you've got the next 4 hours to perform, are you going to bring your A material for 30 minutes, when you're only going to be interrupted every few minutes by Captain Herb?

That sounds about right. He repeats interviews also in the last hour.

Agreed. It's also one reason why I quit listening to Boortz and started listening to TRG during AM drive. I couldn't stand all of the interruptions telling me things I already knew (weather) or didn't care about (traffic).

Question for you folks who are actually in the radio biz: Does frequent traffic and weather really help TSL? It would seem like it becomes an annoyance after a while, unless there's new news to add (a wreck, inclement weather). Or is it one of those things that's just "expected" for news/talk?

Since I moved to the Atlanta area 3 years ago, I've been punching radio buttons trying to find a station that wasn't country, rap, the 70-80's rock, or who know's what some of that other "music" is. Finally this week I happened upon 106.7 and said, yes!!! Music I can sing to or listen to and brings back good memories. I was determined to let someone know in fear of loosing this station. I must state again, moving here from the Chicago area, I have heard enough "country- good ol boy- rebel", along with "nasty- rap -word trash" to last my lifetime!
I see where this station still needs some tweaking because right now the format seems pretty basic-- even with Inis!! (I have no idea if I spelled that right). I've listened to him a few time in years past, here and there, and I am familiar with his "faux pas" that got him fired. I'm willing to give him a whirl. I enjoyed his comments this morning concerning Obama's speech.
I didn't like the female who was on air with him the other day. She came across to me as young dumb, and trying to be heard and added absolutely nothing. I'd like to see them bring on a woman more like myself who is white, in her 40's, not a product of the system, has lived a real life, is open minded and fairly educated. I think someone like this would be a great compliment to Inis...sort of like a female Dr. Phil!!

In answer to your question, traffic and weather updates may compromise TSL with a few P1 listeners. If you are the type to sit and listen to your radio for 10 hours a day, you may have the perception that these updates are frequent and even unnecessary.

However, traffic and weather builds cume for a very, very large P2 and P3 audience. These are listeners who will tune in at the top of the hour to see if there's a major traffic delay, and tune away as soon as Boortz comes on.

I worked at WCBS Newsradio 88 in the mid 1980's when the PD helped develop the concept of "Traffic and Weather Together" on the 8's. He worked with a consultant who discovered that the first questions people have when they wake up are "do I need an umbrella?" and "is there a crash that's going to make me late for work?" By super-serving this basic informational need, News-Talk stations can guarantee themselves a large P2 and P3 audience, while the majority of P1's won't mind either.

I didn't mean to imply he should be all A-material for that half-hour. I meant that, for me, the 15 or 18 minutes that he's actually on during that half hour, and it seems to have gotten less over the years, has gotten more and more stale. I've come to realize that I don't need the traffic as much as I used to. I've even taken to tuning away because I know pretty much how long the breaks are going to be, and then tuning back in.

And I've been such a loyal WSB listener ... since January, 1978 when I moved here.

I couldn't believe I heard "Smokin in the Boys Room" what a blast from the past along with a load of memories!

I think its great, way better than fox 97 ever was. It reminded me of the radio station I grew up with in cleveland, WMJI. They've been playing songs I haven't heard in years and I have yet to turn the dial. Thank you, for a good music station, finally. Music today is terrible, its all sex, drugs, cussing, all to cover up being talentlessness. Now its all greedy hacks, all appearence no subtance.

When songs about sex/drugs/cussing are used to cover up being tasteless ... now, that's baaaaaad!

I remember all the complaints about Fox-97 and later Kool playing all the same oldies over and over and then we get True Oldies 1067 with a very broad playlist and people like itburns bitching it needs to be tightened up. Give me a break! I think what Scott is doing will work just fine and everyone I speak with LOVES the format. It's far better than Fox and Kool ever was and just be thankful we have a True Oldies station in Atlanta. If you support it the station will be around for a long time. True Oldies is Scotts baby and he is very passionate about saving the oldies and I for one is very appreciative and you should be too.

amlover,

I agree with you completely, I love this station. Just wish they could maybe have a local midday show with call in requests, and make up their mind on whom will be on in the afternoon drive. Also, I truly wish they could move Nascar to Kicks. Plus, when is the website going to come up?

I'm very impressed with the format as well. Excellent, broad music selection! Like most others, I'd prefer it to have more of a local feel as well. Here's a couple local hosts that I think would fit the afternoon drive bill perfectly:

JJ Jackson: I'm sure he would leave Louisville in a heartbeat for an Atlanta gig.
Bob Bailey: As far as I know, he's unemployed.
Randy and Spiff: It would require getting Randy out of his God awful GST morning gig, but who knows, this would give GST a chance to correct a mistake and bring back Tom Hughes or the Kimmer to do mornings.
Thinking Outside of the Box: Willard or Kadey Kiley.

Dream on, guys. The whole point of blowing up the country format was to eliminate salaries and put a near zero-cost format on in it's place. There will be no hiring of any "talent" to work this station. If you like the music, be happy you at least have a jukebox playing your favorite songs, because you will NOT have a real radio station.

1067 will have an afternoon host live. Imus 6am to 9am,Scott Shannon from the network 10 am to 3pm local jock 3pm to 8pm then back to the satellite and Nascar on the weekends during race season. Call it a jukebox or whatever you want but it works. 8)
