Oldies 107.9 FM

Tack on WYAY Atlanta to the list of stations doing oldies pretty well. A 12+ share of about 4.0 according to the latest arbs.

107.9 could do a WCBS-FM and WGRR type Classic Hits, and if they can be number one or two 25-54 they can hold on. I don't see them becoming a 55 and over station. It's been alluded here and on countless other threads, that a real good salesperson should be able to convince that agency rep to ignore the instructions of the client and buy the 55 and over station anyway, even when the buy is say, 30-45, or convince the client directly that even if their marketing campaign is designed with a certain demofgraphic in mind, they should go ahead and buy a 55 and up radio station anyway, because after all, they have money too. (Women drink beer for that matter but I don't see beer ads in Redbook when it's laying around the laundromat) Wonder if everyone thinks no one has ever tried, and fgound they were beating their head against the wall.

If 107.9 were to become WGLD in 1997 (and 12 years ago an oldies station could still have a very strong 45-54)
they would have to forget every bit of agency and multi location business and sell exclusively mom and pops (a dwindling number). Are mom and pops going to pay rates that Indianapolis stations generally command? Have my doubts. If a small AM, say WXLW, was to pick up 50s and 60s oldies, get jocks to voicetrack for almost nothing as WDJO(WCIN) in Cinncinati does, they could make a small chunk of change anyway. A full signal FM is not going to settle for that.

And, like WLS-FM, they have low operating expenses thanks to running a lot of Scott Shannon. So, they can be quite profitable - even if their power ratio isn't the best in the market.

Hate to sound like a money guy - because I'm not - but that's the reality of the situation. However, it's nice when a format that I enjoy can also make the suits happy. Such is the case with oldies, when done properly.

Sorry gr8oldies, but you're wrong :D - you said

This is simply too broad a generation, based on too little knowledge of the business side. The first five pieces of agency business would come from all casino and racino clients. That would quickly be followed by agency luxury automotive. Then, health care, espcially messages like heart and other services that are older baby boomer -centric. That would be followed by agency business for many entertainment options [ISO, Caberat, Broadway Across America, Live Nation shows, Pike Performing Arts]. Next, home improvement clients [Bee Window, Feldco, Indiana Foundation Services].

I could go on indefinitely, but Entercom's new Marketing Manager knows this. Again, programming cannot fix sales. Good sales understands the product.

They write $1.5-$2mil in agency business, and another $1-$1.5mil in local, and will look like stars within the company.

If I had the stick available, this is where I would go for immediate success.

If an Oldies station sales staff knows what they're doing, and isn't dependent on agency busness, they will be successfull.

Don't forget it also needs to be void of ego-driven ownership trying to create a personal iPod collection.

Looking at the PPM results from Arbitron (coming soon to Indy) it looks like classic hits is doing VERY well. Perhaps two or three "classic hits" stations will be able to earn a decent living in many markets. Does anyone else think that the PPM world will make only 4-5 music formats viable in a lot of markets? I think the "niche programming" experiments (i.e. Modern A/C) are done for the time being. I'm not suggesting that's healthy for radio long-term, just an economic reality at the present time.

Another hole in the "oldies is a dying format" argument...The Los Angeles PPM ratings just came out and K-Earth 101 is #1 12+. Take a look at healthy dose of 60's stuff they play on "The Greatest Hits On Earth" from the 60's, 70's & 80's. If 107.9 doesn't adopt this format--or something very close to it--they're asleep at the switch.

My guess is its gonna be Scott Shannon and I hope im right cause I like the true oldies format like WLS FM and WOKI in Knoxville, and the new 91.7 in Edinburg..

Very interesting. Real or ruse?

Some country stations use the name Wolf.

Would not surprize me if they went hot country or a rockn country since WFMS is the top station by a little margin, after they changed 93.9 to top 40, which could hurt WZPL. If 97.1 focus on classic country and 107.9 does hot country then WFMS would be in a squeeze between 2 stations. That might be rough on WFMS if that happens.

Gee! just what everyone wants. 3 Country stations. All the stations should just start duplicating
each other. Brilliant corporates. Instead of The Wolf, call it Radio India-no-place!

I pods are on sale at Kmart.

Thats a smoke screen im guessing..... Companys always do that.

Scott Roddy has also done Country up in fort wayne prior to coming back down to Indy to work at WKLU. so its either Oldies or Country. and im sure Entercom would want to strike back at Cumulus for trying to go at WZPL along with Radio one's WNOU with the top 40 format. so why no strike back at Cumulus' bread and butter WFMS

Could be, but I think Oldies would do better since no one is doing it. We already have Hank and WFMS,, WCBK, WKKG ECT....

What if they moved WXNT to the FM? They have Glenn Beck and Fox News. I bet they could get Hannity back buy putting it on a full market FM. All of those are strong brands. Then perhaps "Indy's Oldies" is available on 1430 AM and online.

A previous owner tried that and failed miserably.
