98.3 was oldies years ago. Then they switched to Z-98, a Christian format, with an impressive weekend rock show. After that it was Standards and now Classic Country.
While Oldies will increase performance in 12+, it may not bring any more money and the 25-54 #'s will only decrease over time. Of course heritage also won't move to a new frequency, so the ability post similar numbers may not happen? Oldies can happen, but will be somewhere like 98.3. I don't want to count-out WTHZ, but they can do more with their signal.
If two similar formated stations sound exactly alike, the one with heritage will win. It comes to what you know, have memories associated with and the personalities you like. I'm guessing it can do as well as Whistle 100 did, if they can find local personalities Country listeners will know and some new ones that will bring life to the station. This is why I suggested keeping WFMX Country a few months back. It was protection against this. Sometimes it's better to have one strong country outlet and one weak one, rather than fighting someone else and rimshots are perfect for this.
