Actually, in the case of Jack the results have been very fast to occur for the better in most markets, but not in NYC. Ratings would shoot up instantaneously for Jack. Take Nashville as an example. It had a well established Oldies station that went Jack. The ratings shot up immediately. As for Oldies, it found a new home on a station that was formerly Hot A/C, and that station's ratings went up instantly as well.
As for Blink, it was one of the biggest failures of all time in New York radio history. A full market FM signal that couldn't perform in the ratings.
Usually when there's a new station in town people want to at least give it a chance, tune in and check it out. Remember how big KTU was when it first debuted in the late 70s, and again in the mid 90s? Instant success! When Kiss FM went Adult R&B it found instant success too. Blink? It only found failure.
Now if a station debuts with a 2 or 2.5 share, then yeah maybe the powers will be will give such a station time to grow. But when it debuts with a 1.5, then manages to drop a bit more? The whole "the only way is up" theory is pretty much tossed out the window. It just means New Yorkers sampled the station, didn't like it, and Jack ended up with a smaller listener base...
Now if PLJ really will flip then perhaps with the new market landscape Jack will have a better chance of survival. Otherwise, I see Jack being kicked outta the big apple for not paying his bills
