Oldies comming back to New York? All Access thinks so!

If you have an All Access account, go to "net news" and then scroll down to:
"Oldies In Da Big Apple, Anyone?"

All Access is hinting that a couple of other New York broadcasters, (gee, I wonder which ones) are considering oldies. The next set of ratings apparently comes out today.

Let the debate begin again!

I definitely think an Oldies station should return to the airwaves in NYC, hopefully with a playlist of more then 300 songs. The ratings would definitely be there, and with careful marketing and planning so will the slightly younger demos.

OLDIES ON 95.5 PLJ??

Rumor has it that WPLJ will flip the switch sometime shortly, don't know how true it is but I can see it being that Scott Shannon already programs oldies!

Can you imagine it, Oldies on 95.5??!!

New York Doesn't Give Jack *hit About Jack

The new ratings are in, and Jack's ratings are still at the bottom of the barrel, further proving that NYC isn't like every other American city. It may work in many other major, large ,and medium sized markets, but in NYC Jack is a spectacular failure. If Country has any shot at regaining a frequency, 101.1 might be the one to be able to supply it.
The strongest candidate to go Oldies (in my opinion) is 95.5 PLJ, and with Scott Shannon on board it'll do it right.

RadioNation:

Since we can't post actual ratings numbers, WPLJ in the latest Fall Arbitrend Part 1 is at their lowest number ever(if not in 15 years).

If it happens, PLEASE, don't make it the satellite jockless "True Oldies Channel!" They should keep the WPLJ (or WABC-FM) calls and most of the airstaff.

Re: OLDIES ON 95.5 PLJ??

Well this would be great for fans of Oldies...what about those of us who like a true Hot AC/Mix station....a station that has personality, jocks (unlike Jack) and a nice mixture of music...I'm all for having oldies back, but I'd hate to see it at the expense of WPLJ...

Would a Oldies WPLJ try to hire Ex CBS FM Jocks like Bob Shannon, Bill Brown, Bobby Jay and Don K Reed if not as full timers as Part Timers.

Could the current Scott and Todd Morning show work with a Oldies Format or would it have to be Retooled.

Shannon"s "True Oldies" on PLJ will go FROM WORST TO FIRST!

JUST WATCH!

If this takes place I could see Infinity ending up with the 3 lowest rated FM stations in NY...Mix, Jack, and Free-FM which I predict will freefall when they go talk.

Re: OLDIES ON 95.5 PLJ??

They just brought back the Rocky Allen show. What would happen to him? How are those ratings?

I can definately see Oldies on 95.5.
1. I would not hire CBS air talent. They need to start fresh. I would keep most of the current staff.
2. PLJ's numbers stink- few people will miss it. Most will move to LTW while others will go to Z100.

I agree with you. I'd like to see oldies come back, but PLJ (in my opinion) is a great station. The personalities are good and the music is good.

These are probably just rumors (rumors that are sparking up lots of discussion). PLJ is such a high billing station and to switch to a format that doesn't do as well $$$ wise would be dumb, but I see the possibility of it since they switched WZZN in Chicago. I guess we'll find out! Maybe Infinity will change WCBS FM to a more Hot AC station WITH personalities and a new imaging if PLJ switched. If the calls change (IF THIS HAPPENS) maybe CBS FM could grab the PLJ calls. "101.1 WPLJ The Best Music Mix".

Very interesting.<P ID="signature">______________

A fresh start is a good idea, but it would be nice to hear the old CBS FM jocks. I don't see the current staff working with oldies though.

Or some will move to Jack, IF (a huge IF) PLJ switches. Also, PLJ's numbers may stink 12+, but they do well 25-54.

Re: OLDIES ON 95.5 PLJ??

allthough I hate wplj most of the time, mostly listening to thier 80's at 8 or 80's on saturday nights, I give them props for staying put becasue they know that allthough their adience is small, they have a loyal audience.
I think the main thing that keeps them from changing is they probably have contracts for advertising or they are getting good profit from advertising revenue.

I almost wanted to write a reply...but you wrote it for me. :)
Oldies comes back, sounds great.
Oldies comes back on PLJ, understandable cause of current PLJ ratings.
Make business sense? no due their billing.

Jack certainly hasn't been a spectacular success, as Infinity was undoubtedly hoping it would be. But I think it's too early to call it a spectacular failure. They haven't even been through two full books yet.

I do agree, however, that there's an excellent opportunity for oldies in NYC.

Rome wasn't built in a day and that is the problem with the zero attention span culture. The same was said of Blink when it was not a spectacular hit after one book and then the plug was pulled. True blink was a bad idea from conception to execution but you know just as well as I do that the audience doesnt really figure out that any real changes have been made for a good six months, I know it seems unfathomable that anyone in this world would not be aware of jack's presence and his replacing CBS Fm, but there are millions and millions of people in this city alone who have much more on their minds than where did my favorite radio station go?. Time will tell, Time.

Actually, in the case of Jack the results have been very fast to occur for the better in most markets, but not in NYC. Ratings would shoot up instantaneously for Jack. Take Nashville as an example. It had a well established Oldies station that went Jack. The ratings shot up immediately. As for Oldies, it found a new home on a station that was formerly Hot A/C, and that station's ratings went up instantly as well.

As for Blink, it was one of the biggest failures of all time in New York radio history. A full market FM signal that couldn't perform in the ratings.
Usually when there's a new station in town people want to at least give it a chance, tune in and check it out. Remember how big KTU was when it first debuted in the late 70s, and again in the mid 90s? Instant success! When Kiss FM went Adult R&B it found instant success too. Blink? It only found failure.

Now if a station debuts with a 2 or 2.5 share, then yeah maybe the powers will be will give such a station time to grow. But when it debuts with a 1.5, then manages to drop a bit more? The whole "the only way is up" theory is pretty much tossed out the window. It just means New Yorkers sampled the station, didn't like it, and Jack ended up with a smaller listener base...

Now if PLJ really will flip then perhaps with the new market landscape Jack will have a better chance of survival. Otherwise, I see Jack being kicked outta the big apple for not paying his bills ;)
