Oldies KDOK to Talk KTBB-FM April 27

allaccess.com is reporting KDOK will drop oldies and become talk KTBB-FM April 27. According to them, KTBB-FM will simulcast KTBB for morning drive and then split off for Dr Laura and Dave Ramsey middays. KTBB's PM sports show with David Smoak will move from KTBB to KTBB-FM.

Looks like Gleiser is staving off any talk radio competition by grabbing up all the sellable syndication. Good move to dominate the talk radio market (which is highly sellable if your AEs know what they are doing), but doesn't offer you much variety in product. This must have been a tough decision.

What an opportunity for one of the lower rated FM statons (with a half decent stick) to grab a very viable format that is doing well in numerous markets across the state. Who will it be?

In his announcement, Gleiser stated one of the main issues driving his decision in switching KDOK is the performance royalties the labels are trying to get from local radio stations. He said he expects many more FM's will go talk in the coming years due to the relationship between the music industry and FM radio "unraveling."

Now that I have recovered, I wonder if the heritage KDOK calls will once again reside at AM1490.

That's really a shame and disapointment, KDOK is one of the best sounding stations in East Texas. It will leave a huge hole in the market.

But adding an FM sick doesn't really help KTBB-AM any since 92.1's signal only covers Tyler, and barely gets into Longview.

Moving Smoaky to FM makes since, except it kind of cuts off the eastern part of his audience (unless there is a simulcast plan that I'm not aware of.) Having Smoaky's show start at 4 pm has created a collision of sorts with the Sean Hannity Show.

Personally, I would have just moved Smoak to 5 PM, or found an alternate time slot (if there is any), and kept the Oldies format on KDOK, but then again, I neither get to see Gleiser's financial statements, nor do I get to see his Arbs, nor am I familiar with his company's business plan and model. Like I said earlier, it could be that Gleiser plans to own the Talk radio market. If that is the case, this is a good move. Talk radio listeners on average have higher-than-average incomes, invest well, and are quality customers, who can write a check and qualify for financing. That customer is greatly needed in this economy, and talk radio has a good number of them listening. (Plus, there's the sellability of the advertising. Talk radio customers don't hit "scan" the second a spot plays.)

According to the announcement segment MP3 posted on smoaky.com, Smoaky will move to BB-FM and remain in the 4-7P timeslot. Hannity will air live in its entirety (1-4P).

While it may cut off the eastern part of his audience, he may well pick up listeners that wouldn't otherwise tune in because of interference inherent to AM radio. Plus, there won't be the sunset time power-down and default reduction in listenership.

This sucks. Not only is one of the few radio stations left in NE Texas with all local folks, is going by the wayside (not to mention great music), but it's being replaced by the same right-winged blowhards that I don't want to listen to on AM (with the exception of Smoak).

And this was not a difficult decision, it is money saving position. They won't have to pay any of the folks that were on-air at KDOK anymore and they'll probably be able to get a few more dollars for each of the spots. Not much more, because as it was pointed out, the signal is basically only good in the Tyler metro area.

I expect this kind of crap from Gap, Waller, or Access-1, I did not expect this from Gleiser. I thought he might be deserving of the TX HOF vote this year, based on this decision, not anymore!

I'd be curious to hear Paul Kyser's reaction to this news.

I wouldn't necessarily call Dr. Laura or Dave Ramsey right wing blowhards... I mean they are conservative, but their shows are a far cry from Limbaugh/Hannity. In fact, Ramsey is what Talk Radio should be.

The quote in the Tyler Paper about royalties was over the top. That issue had been raised and defeated in Congress before, and no station owner in his right mind would flip formats on a passing political event that would barely make a footnote in Congressional Quarterly.

Very disapointing considering that KDOK-FM was a winning station with heritage calls. Even near the end it was almost like whoever programmed the music took all 27 volumes of Rhino Records "Have a Nice Day" 70's hits collection and put them in a continuous loop.

I get the feeling Gleiser will be getting out of the radio business soon.

If I were Reynold’s Broadcasting, (and I’m not) I’d be waiting in line to pick up the KDOK call letters and apply them to KAJK. I’d then flip the format from “Jack” to oldies.

It is a giant hole that is missing in the market. I’d do it myself, but being the only standards station for well over a hundred miles has worked out.

I just wonder if Jack was the nail in KDOK's coffin. When Jack debuted last year KDOK almost immediately stopped playing 60's oldies and went all-70's and early 80's. That may have chased off a lot of long time listeners.

Again it's a shame this happened. KDOK had the best (non-country radio) DJ staff in East Texas. I heard
Mick Fulgham's sign off tonight, and he mentioned he had worked for KDOK for 10 years, the longest he's ever worked for any station.

For oldies, it's now KWRW (which can be hard to get in Kilgore because of KALK in Mt Pleasant), the more imaginatively programmed Oldies stations online, and my CD, Vinyl and Mp3 library.

Final songs on KDOK:

I'm A Believer - The Monkees
Brickhouse - The Commodores
You've Got A Friend - James Taylor
Show Me The Way - Peter Frampton
American Pie - Don McLean

RIP KDOK.
