I Dont Want To Love You--Barry Lee Show.
Hold Tight in the last Tarentino movie with Curt Russell.... my brother was stationed at
Lakenheath England (mis-spelled I'm sure) 1967-1969 he came home raving about Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich

"Bend It" did get some air play in the US. I heard it on WOWO in 1966. Dave Dee & the group were very big in the UK.

As did Zabadak a couple of years later ('68 or '69 IIRC). I think KIOA in Des Moines, KSTT in Davenport, and/or KXOK in St. Louis were playing it. We got a fair number of requests for it on our campus carrier current station. Mostly it was regarded as a joke, although I don't think it was intended as such. I think I still have the 45 somewhere.

Hornet....

Have you ever spent any time in the UK? If so, you're aware that the charts from the top 40 "heyday" (and hence the mix on what passes for oldies radio over there) were "the same but different" than here. Meaning that there was lots of good stuff on each side of the pond that deservedly charted on one side, but for whatever reason didn't make it to other. That illustrates your great point about the "experts".

Another example involves my daughter, who's lived in London for ten years. She's a Jimmy Buffett fan. She reports that aside from a few rare spins of "Margaritaville", his music is invisible on British radio (unlike many of his contemporaries), and most of her UK friends (including her boyfriend) are unfamiliar with him. Yet here, he remains a major force on the concert circuit.

Cyberdad is right. There's a whole different world of Rock & Roll over in the UK. My first trip there in the 70s I briefly discovered that.
In the 80s & the 90s I had a friend over there periodically send me tapes of a program called "Pick of the Pops". This show featured the Top 20 of a given week in the 50s, 60s & 70s. I managed to hear so many artists & songs undiscovered in this country. Also some artist from this country that weren't very big had major success over there.
I have a copy of the "British Hit Singles" book. It's the Joel Whitburn UK eqivalent of charted singles over there. A very interesting book if you're a pop music lover like we are.

I have discovered many of the British hits on a Dutch oldies stream I listen to. A couple of my favorites include

Mac and Katie Kissoon-Sugar Candy Kisses...This song hit #3 in the UK in 1975 but not the U.S chart at all. As you can tell by the title it's a sweet love song...a soul-pop song that actually sounds more American than British to me. Look this one up, you will love it from the first time you hear it and be amazed U.S stations didn't touch it.

Real Thing-You To Me Are Everything...this was #1 for 3 weeks in the UK in 1976, re-released in the 80s and covered by other acts as well. A true classic in the UK yet was a stiff in the U.S..it peaked at #64. I would call this one uptempo soul-pop with a great hook.

My heart was in england , my body was in USA..1964-1975 the music , the fashions, the birds,
the mods, the teddy boys, I loved it all....

great british lady pop singers that i love their music ,that didn't make the us charts,

Billie Davis....I'll Come Home, I can remember
susan maughan...make him mine, I've Got To Learn to Forget
kathy kirby...way of love, all of a sudden my heart sings
helen shapiro..she charted one I think.. I looked , she charted one. She sounded just like Johnny crawford...

I love the ones that did chart:
marianne faithful
sandie shaw
cilla black
petula
dusty
lulu

Did you ever hear Kathy Kirby's version of "Secret Love?" It was #3 in the UK in 63 & quite different than Doris Day's.
Helen Shapiro was a big star in the UK & still tours in Europe. Cliff Richard is the all time biggest selling artist in the UK--bigger than Elvis ever was.
Regarding Lulu, she had many big hits in the UK that were never charted in the US. Conversely, "To Sir With Love" never charted in the UK.

+1...Amen. Unfortunately British Oldies radio seems mostly centered on the 80s. Some 70s and only a small amount of 60s....although they do have some programming that dials it back a little more on the weekends. To me it's a little weird that you actually hear more hear more '60s British invasion stuff on this side of the pond than over there.

True story...My daughter, obviously having been around me, grew up hearing a lot of oldies and for the most part likes '60s and '70s (although her tastes are basically more contemporary). Anyway, one night in the Pub with me and her boyfriend, we were talking about one of her favorite British songs/singers....Sandee Shaw's "Girl Don't Come". Her 34-year old boyfriend....a native of Essex....had never heard of either the song nor the singer! At least he vaguely knew who Cilla Black was.

That's definitely NOT the case for my sister-in-law, who's from Manchester and is of our generation. She saw Sandee Shaw perform live in-person on a few occasions as well as frequently on "Top of The Pops" etc.

Marianne Faithful? In his book that came out last year, Keith Richards relates a funny story about the one and only time he spent some "quality time" with her. It was at Mick Jagger's home, and was interrupted when Mick returned unexpectedly and Keith was forced to make a very hasty exit through a window. In his haste to dress and leave, Keith left his socks on the floor, and Marianne was managed to push them under the bed at the last second before Mick walked in. According to the story, to this day when Keith and Marianne meet, their running joke is her saying to him, "You've forgotten your socks, Keith"!

Ahh Sandee Shaw--singing with her shoes off. I have several videos of "Top of the Pops". Great show at the time along with the Sunday radio sister show "Pick of the Pops".

Kathy Kirby's version of "Secret Love" is almost disco sounding, very upbeat for it's time, same with her "Let Me Go Lover"...I like her version of "Little Thing mean A lot"..she sure had a strong voice (check out her song "You're The One" ....a cross between cilla Black and Shirley Bassey another fine british singer.

"girl Don't Come" are you kidding me that's my favorite , slightly ahead of "Always something There".....I have an only child,41 yr old, Phoenix/part-time bartender..oldies playing at her bar..she knows all the songs and some old guys(my age, you know) at the bar ask where she knew the oldies,,she said "don't even Go There"..they called me at 1:00am with a couple of trivia questions who did "Matchsticks " and "Something In The Air".. I told them Staus Quo and Thunderclap Nueman, and "If you are going to call me at 1:00am make it a tougher question." we all got a chuckle over that.

Marianne and Keith see what hard drugs do to you..........

Move over Radioman and hornet.... Not only does my daughter know the oldies (yeah, right...wonder how that happened), but she's also Pub Quiz night music trivia champion at her and her boyfriend's "local"! Again...wonder how that could be.

For those unfamiliar, many of the neighborhood pubs in the UK have quiz nights on one weeknight each week (usually Thursdays). "
Her most recent experience at their local was several weeks back when she was the only one who could name the required three Manfred Mann hits. Everyone got "Doo Wah Diddy" and "Blinded by the Light", but she was able to also chime in with "Pretty Flamingo".

She's talked about bringing me along sometime as "guest ringer". I'd love to, but so far when I've been over there, the "logistics" haven't worked out.

As for Keith & Marianne.... Obviously no shortage of drugs between those two. It's been almost a year since I read Keith's book. Actually bought it at Heathrow and read the first half or so on the plane home. Anyway...the story IIRC, didn't involve drugs at all...it was more a case of satisfying a mutual "what would it be like?" curiosity.

What happened to "Mighty Quinn" with the Manfreds?
Obviously we taught our kids well.

I'm sure she's familiar with it...but probably associates it more with Dylan.

there's a national trivia game at bars accross the country on the NTN ( Ithink it stands for Natl Trivia networks)..you compete amongst the bar patrons where you are at, and against all the network bars indiviually and collectively....5-6 categories of trivia and on sat night nationally it is music trivia at 6:00pm - 8;00PM..mst.... talk about some tuff competition.

We should all get in on this. I'd bet on the people from this board.

I first came across the network video trivia game at an East Side Mario's up the street from the hotel where I used to stay in downtown Winnipeg. (East Side Mario's is a Canadian chain....sort of like an Italian version of TGI Friday's.  A pretty good place, actually).  This was about fifteen years ago, and the place was loaded with people who really took it seriously and knew what they were doing.  I got into a few rounds and did well in the music trivia categories but got creamed in everything else!  I'm no slouch at trivia, but the regulars there were phenomenal.

Sure enough, subsequently for the next few years whenever I'd be in a place with this game, I'd sometimes see "ESM downtown" Winnipeg on the North America-wide high scores leader board.
