Oldies return to Knoxville

I don't know about this weekend, but they were doing the legal ID twice an hour on Friday, coming out of breaks at about :27 and :57.

We run the True Oldies Channel on Cool 97.5 KJMO in Jefferson City, MO, with a live local DJ in the AM Drive. Since Cumulus owns us, it could be done there since Citadel owns the network. Will it??

Looking what was there before I worked for them, it might have been wise to leave 98.7 as Smooth Jazz. Who knows?

As I said before, my only concern is what happens to two good and decent people, Joe and Angie. I ain't playing in that sandbox any longer.

Put Joe and Angie on in the morning drive. Then, put Tom Kent's syndicated oldies show on in the evenings. Tom gives oldies that boss radio feel, and was a great addition to 95.7/106.7 when they did oldies. WLSQ also ran the TK show during their brief run with the oldies. I think it's going to be hard to beat Phil Williams on WNOX in the afternoons - he probably has a lot of the oldies-age listeners to begin with.

So far what I've heard on 98.7 has been a great variety of oldies - we just need some voices there for at least part of the day to break the monotony.

Tom Kent is no longer on the syndicated TKO oldies show. He is, as they say, looking for his next opportunity. They replaced him with one guy on the weeknight show and John Landecker on the weekend.

Wow - had not heard that. I thought that was Tom's own show. Thanks for the info and good luck to Tom.

You should have told us who or what "McWhorter" is, what the website is, and where his blog is.

A little searching on the web determines that you are refering to Ben McWhorter who apparently works at WIVK. His website is www.benmac.com, however I don't see any blog on the site. So I guess you'll be the only one who enjoys this "laugh riot" unless you decide to share it with us.

I'm sorry. I thought that the majority of posters here were industry types who knew who the players are.

Yes, it was Ben McWhorter's website. Click on "articles" and then "Media news."

Of course Ben is going to put the old Citadel spin on things and isn't going to come right out and admit that they (Citadel) can't get a
handle on the Knoxville market so they're once again throwing darts in the dark at a format wheel. This format will be a failure
just like all other formats they have tried outside of the country genre.

I think Citadel would do well if they executed a major house cleaning on Old Kingston Pike. These are the same knuckleheads that
brought the Knoxville market that stellar facility "WHIG."

OK, so outside of the 98.7 frequency, what at Citadel would benefit from a housecleaning? WIVK may not being the best country station from a music standpoint, but it's held a 20+ share for years. We can argue all day about playlists and personalities, but what's going to give them BETTER numbers? NewsTalk100 and the Sports Animal are both strong in the ratings, and most importantly, in billing. What would you suggest they change there? Citadel bills far more than any other cluster in Knoxville. According to R&R, Knoxville was one of Citadel's top-billing markets. They can afford for one of their signals to drag in the ratings, especially when it's costing them next to nothing.

The only time in its history the 98.7 signal has been even a minor success was when they went Rhythmic when there was no other FM rhythmic choice. It failed because Russ Allen and Hot 104.5 did a better job reaching listeners and programming music and personalities that the young audience could connect with. They also had a good sales team that knew how to sell the younger market, and were able to package a few things with Star 102.1.

Looking at some old Arbitron numbers recently, I saw that 98.7 did very well a few years ago when they switched from satellite country to rock as WXVO "98.7 The X", however that success was very short lived. I believe the "smooth jazz" format on 98.7 did well initially too. That frequency is known for format changes that get a lot of attention right away, and then drop off fast.

Like I said before, they probably don't care about ratings for the oldies format. It's just another clearance for national advertising on Citadel's "True Oldies Channel."

The X days were before I followed the business of radio, but I remember that I loved 98.7 The X and that there was an outcry followed by a story in the Sentinel about the switch. I remember someone from management saying in the story that they were going to play the complaint calls at the Dick Broadcasting Christmas party because Smooth Jazz was doing so well. "The X" format returned for a short while in late 1999/early 2000 on 106.7 before that signal was purchased by South Central.

I think you're confused BRice. The "outcry" was a result of their first attempt to drop the "River" format on WOKI (now WNOX) 100.3, not the "X" format which was WXVO on 98.7 which was "Earl" but first was "River" after the swap a couple of years ago.

Regarding the house cleaning, well it will never happen. They (Citadel) have decided to leave the Knoxville market well enough alone since WIVK is carrying a big wad of this market's annual advertising budgets. They don't have any real debt.

But, WIVK has been in the low 20s/high teens since "The Hitkicker" was launched, which they now LMA. Am I the only one who remembers that before WOKI went country WIVK was the perpetually in the 30+ range?

From Southern Comfort: What was "WHIG?"

WHIG was a separate identity created for what was then WIVK-AM 850 in the early 1980's. It was partly driven by then FCC rules regarding AM/FM simulcasts. It did play pop music, but it was short-lived. And they went back to WIVK-AM playing country Music with separate mid-day airstaff until the simulcast rules changed completely, making the separation times irrelevant. Since this was 20 something years ago, another company, NOT Citadel, with another General manager/program director, and a facility they don't even own anymore, it kinda makes this accusation irrelevant...dosen't it?

And yes, there *was* an outcry when "The X" was dropped also. Maybe not as publicly visible as "The River," but an outcry nonetheless. I was there. I remember the phone calls and e-mails.

When Calude Tomlinson was alive and on mornings, WIVK had a 40 share once. Yes, 40. By themselves.

No, I'm not confused. I'm thinking outcry circa 1997. It was nowhere on the scale of the River, but there were quite a few pissed off people.

I'm well aware of the WOKI 100.3 The River rally, I was a pretty big part of it at the time.

Let's be honest. The "X" didn't really make a blip on the ratings radar. Todd was a good guy, but
their consultant was the worst. I don't remember any outcry except for the overpaid jocks when they
went "WYLD" and created some ratings for the signal.

Want to talk about WTNZ's lightbulb burning out now? We can talk about Clinton Top-40 in the mid-80s too.

nobody cared when it went away either.

From the Knoxville News Sentinel, April 9,1999:

"THE X AND WHY

What happens when you take a fire-breathing, wide-open, turbo-charged, rock 'n' roll radio station and move it to a smooth jazz format?

Well, the first day isn't pretty. The storm has just about blown over at Dick Broadcasting, and the former rocker 98.7 is now smooth jazz. (Soon the WXVO calls letters become WSMJ, too.) [*EDIT]
and from elsewhere in the paper that day:
ALL THAT JAZZ: The folks calling Dick Broadcasting and blasting them for changing the format of 98.7-FM from hard rock to smooth jazz should be advised of an important fact: Dick Broadcasting has Caller ID on its phones. General Manager Bobby Denton has been the recipient of most of the angry, obscenity-laden messages over the past few days since WXVO changed its call letters to WSMJ to signify the format change. Winter '98... 12+... WXVO (in their first book as "98.7 The X") jumped up from a 0.7 to a 5.5, tied for 6th place.

I would say that's a good "blip"
