The tragedy here is that when the music industry lobbied congress for this royalty, they testified that the way the royalty was structured would benefit small streamers. We have seen how it really has benefited big tech, not small streamers.

Now this same group is lobbying the same congress wanted to extend this same royalty to broadcast radio, saying it will benefit smaller broadcasters. Fool me once....
 
I know there are licensing costs for streaming.
Is this only paid say if I listen for 5 minutes do they only have to pay for 5 minuts of my time?
You said per 1000 so can you explain this further?
Is there any way to know how many people are listening to your stream vs. OTA?
Now I know there's no way for tuners to report to the broadcasters since they don't have internet connectivity like smart TVs doo.
With cars having hotspots in them (at least the newer cars) is there a way to phone home to let stations know who's listening OTA? Or this only occur if you're using a streaming platform.

Like most legal things, it's very complicated.

It's not based on time, but on a per-song basis. So the platform pays a royalty for every song played. The have to report which songs were played, and the audience for each song. They know how many people are streaming based on subscriber logins. The payment goes to the artist, writer, label, and musicians.

The tuners don't report, but people wearing PPM devices report what they're listening to.
 
Realizing with the almost demise of the “oldies” and “easy listening” radio station formats there won’t the kind of radio tributes to Olivia Newton John upon her passing to her recording career the way there would have been 10 years ago.

Listening to a quickly put-together live hour on a UK online station "Sound of Spitfire" right now. But nothing on Boom Radio, which plays her music frequently --- pre-set playlists.
 
The Big WECK (Buffalo) is playing songs by ONJ at the top of every hour today. WECK is a fantastic stream with live and local talent for anyone who enjoys oldies. And they embrace the "Oldies" moniker.

Now get off my lawn. Just kidding.

Keep in mind they're live & local talent only if you live in Buffalo. If not, then they're no different than an outside VT.
 
And Ben FM in Philly did a couple of her songs this morning (not that Physical and the Grease mix are really that far outside the norm for them anyway, but that's neither here nor there). Morning host spent a couple of minutes talking about it. Seems like a perfectly reasonable approach. I'm not sure what more of a "tribute" there would need to be under the circumstances.
 
Looks like WOGL played "Physical" yesterday during the 4:00 hour and "You're the One That I Want" about an hour later. No idea obviously whether the jock mentioned anything or if the songs simply played along with the others.

Totally unrelated thought I have from scanning WOGL's playlist: Do listeners really want to hear Phil Collins so often? I'm obsessed with how obsessed WOGL seems to be with him. I'm squarely in the demo and Collins/Genesis was/were releasing singles when I was a young, active consumer of pop product...but I think his music is just "kinda whatever." But it must test spectacularly and that really surprises me.
 
By your own description, you’re obsessed. Listeners? Nope. I mean it has to test well enough to play of course, but he’s going to be a core for the bulk of that audience with a large “library,” so no surprise there’s a lot. And the listeners aren’t keeping score 😉
 
The poor guy can barely stand anymore. Can’t really drum. What dates does he have booked solo? After his remarks and that final concert, smart money is on saying “that’s all” there is.

Got this message when I tried to stream it “This station is not streaming to your geographic area at the moment.” I’d expect to see this with an station from another country (or if a sports broadcast can’t be broadcast outside of their area) but not for music programming from another state in this country.
