OMG!!! Howard Stern to leave in June 2009!!!!!!!!!

I just heard from a board op down the hall from Howard Stern. Apparently Howard will be leaving XM-Sirrius in June 2009 and return to another FM in NYC!!!

Re: BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoo hoo, you tell 'em, Fred!

Hilarious - even Stern is getting a bailout!

Makes sense: the stock he got from Sirius is worthless and when his contract ends they will not be able to afford to re-hire him. Because of stock losses his deal with Sirius probably ended up making him a lot less than advertised. Regular old radio will not be able to pay him anywhere near what he actually made at Sirius, but Sirius will be in an even worse position, if indeed it's even still on the air in summer 2009.

Is XM-Sirius stock really .18 a share on the NASDAQ????? That can't be right????

The subscription model is NOT going to work in a severely contracting economy.

If Sirius XM does shut its doors and Stern is forced back into terrestrial radio, it won't be the same as before he left. He will have to clean things up a bit, and what worked before may not work this time, and I'm not sure anyone will pay the price he asks.

I like Stern, but times are changing and changing rapidly.

Although this is a story of questionable provenance, it makes a certain amount of sense for Stern to be planning an escape route. He's lost not only some money (although he won't be hurting even if SiriusXM fails) but something that hurts him more than lost money--a lot of his visibility and clout. And he could lose a lot more if he doesn't bolt at the earliest legal opportunity. He was always at his best when he was fighting the boundaries of broadcast radio, testing the outer limits of the envelope. It wouldn't surprise me to see him as morning man on a more conventional talk station come 2010, or back in broadcast radio syndication, or both.

I'd say that if he would up on WOR I'd know I'd died and gone to hell and it had just frozen over. But it wouldn't be a shock to see him back on an FM in the CBS cluster (AFAIK he's on OK terms with Dan Mason), or failing that, does anyone know how long Don Imus' contract runs at Citadel/WABC?

92.3 is not going to bring him back they allready tried that why rehash the past ?

Because he was the highest rated morning personality in New York, and he show billed very very well.
Stations wish they had that kind of hash.

But, I dont think they will actually get that opportunity.

I think at this point he would rather retire than have a show on terrestrial radio. That will not happen. When his contract is up, he will go relax.

Not likely, but here's another thought. Forget about CBS, Westwood or any other syndicator. Stern's best bet is to syndicate himself--cut out the middleman, hire a sales force to sell the show and the ad time. Stations across the country, former affiliates and new ones, will be lining up ten deep to add Howard to their lineup.

And Bubble Yum is made from spider eggs...

You got to love these myths. They usually start up when companies go through change. I guess it helps people feel better about themselves when they can make believe everyone might be loosing their job, even the 'big guys'.

And so you know, if you are going to make up a story, you might want to get it right the first time rather than edit it. Originally the topic of this thread was "'BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'" Now changed to "Re: OMG!!! Howard Stern to leave in June 2009!!!!!!!!!"

And in your original post you said:

"I'm a board op just down the hall from Howard Stern. Apparently Howard will be leaving XM-Sirrius in June 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Only to change it to

"A board op told me..."

Nice game of telephone and about as much truth as Obama being a Muslim.

He will return to terrestrial radio because Sat Radio is doomed. That big payment is due in January and Howard will make a wise move. Good luck Howard, and welcome back to radio...

Do you think that he would consider it? Looking at his history, the biggest factor that saw him dump on terrestrial radio was what he saw as over censorship. It would be interesting to see if he could live in the regulated enviroment. I would also think that anyone game enough to sign him on would be looking for a penalty clause in his contract, to cover some sort of legal cost's he would doubtlessly generate.

Basically I bet Howard is hedging on Obama putting in the FCC someone who will relax the current obscenity restrictions. Chris Rock has my vote for Commish...

He's going to wind up back on the FM airwaves somewhere in NYC, most likely syndicated as well. As someone mentioned, he's gotta really clean it up if he wants to wind up back on that dreaded terrestrial FM band and people actually paid to hear his full blown, unfiltered raunch. It's going to be hard for people to go back to the way it was. And even more genteel than before, thanks to Michael Powell and these religious radio "watchdog" nut jobs. Granted, we the posters of Radio-Info are watchdogs and in some cases - myself included, nut jobs (at least I tell it like it is.) But I/we don't base our points of view via some Judeo-Something media wanna-be guru that tells us what families allegedly want and then goes home and beats their wives and kids with the Old Testament.

I'm only hoping Obama's choice for FCC chairman will have the good sense to know that radio is in trouble and it's only people like Stern that can save it from oblivion. I mean there are stations in Europe than get away with more risque stuff than Howard Stern is allowed to in the land of "freedom of speech" and that there IS an audience for this material he and other "shock jocks" do and they should have a terrestrial radio format and outlet to be heard in all it's glory. Maybe on HD 2-3 something - do those fall under the same "obscenity" hogwash as as the main analog signals? Would it even be noticed?

And when he's gone from satellite...well that just about wraps it up for Sirius XM. But terrestrial radio needs to wise up too. Because with mobile wi-fi for cars and portables is just around the corner, he could have a future option of doing it all by a subscription service through the web if need be. And that could also happen. But in the meantime, terrestrial radio had better be nice to the King of All Media. He's one of the very few left in this industry that can get what he wants at his own price and national advertisers KNOW this. And respect it.
