On Rock 103

Once the PPMs took over, I was somewhat surprised to see Rock 103's numbers move upward, and I had expected that they would drop. However, looking back, I suspect people started listening because they wanted to hear Bad Dog, not knowing how long they would have that privilege.

Now that Bad Dog has left us, what happens to Rock 103? I have a hard time thinking that their numbers will stay up, as many people will believe that an era has ended and will abandon the station. So, if the numbers drop, what direction do they take?

Does anyone else think that, within the next six months, WEGR returns to its old calls and becomes WREC-FM, simulcasting 600? I know about the HD, but there are, what, 50 people in town who have HD receivers? I think, unless the new morning show does better than expected, this is where they are headed.

OK, veterans, what do you think?

It could happen with WREC being simulcast on 102.7, if it saves Cheap Channel money. I once talked to Leonard Blakely about a job with Cheap Channel and said I wasn't interested because I was making more money sweeping floors and cleaning toilets at Garden Ridge. That was back in 1998.

Only time will tell.

The move of strong AM talkers to FM has taken off across the country, except for Memphis. So I imagine whichever CC facility is lowest in the ratings is going to be ripe for change. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't blow up a decent format already to put WREC on. They're doing it in a lot of other markets.

WREC on 103 would work. I believe now would be a good time for them to change to country. In keeping with 103 listener demographics, maybe have an edgier country music like The Rebel plays. I would start with the change in the summer around Fourth of July. The all-american type of launch. If Brian Elder decides not to run for office and their non compete was up, I would reunite Young, Elder, and Captain Pat on mornings. They were on-air for fifteen years on the format and since they know the competitor KIX 106 so well, it would seem like a good fit. At least on paper.

Back in the 70's it was country with the WZXR calls :D

Although I'm not a big country listener, I'd rather see 103 go country than to simulcasting WREC on the main channel. To me putting news/talk on FM is a waste of a station, especially when all it is doing is simulcasting an already existing AM station.

Forever Communications blew up 105.3 and 94.3 in the Jackson area, plus a translator on 94.1 to put on the same news/talk programming that is already on 1390. The translator rebroadcasting 1390 probably wouldn't be so bad, but a town the size of Jackson wasting three frequencies to simulcast an AM is ridiculous. I know they probably look at it now as 1390 is simulcasting the FMs, but that is still wasting at least two FM frequencies that could be doing something else.

I don't think that the Memphis market would support two 100,000 country FM stations. I believe Kix 106 has that market sewn up. We need to keep in mind it's been a few years since the days of Froggy 94. Froggy had somewhat respectable ratings against Kix 106 in the ratings, but let's not kid ourselves. Froggy 94 was never going to win that battle. I believe Froggy's losing to Kix 106 in the ratings had more to do with not enough country fans in the market than it did with Froggy's lower power.

I don't believe that 102.7's 100,000 watts of would be the answer that Froggy 94 never had in potentially competing with Kix 106.

You know, after looking at the PPM numbers, I don't think 103 is doing that terrible as many here are made to think. Yes they were down in February, but at least they are not consistently in the tank.

To add, I kinda like the new morning show. It's a good alternative to switch to when D&Z play wierd music or get to a boring subject like gardening. The other day they an interview with a guy about horse racing. Who gives a $***. I love D&Z to death, but come on!

I imagine because Drake is from Kentucky is why the horse racing guy was on. Kentucky = Horse Racing

FB&HW could get Rock 103 by for a few months. It's a cost saver for Rock 103, but I do think that a format change is in the offing. This FB&HW experiment is buying Cheap Channel time to figure out what they want to do with 102.7 long term.

However, Horse Racing + Memphis Market = Boredom

But there are so many other signals doing so much worse. I would name 98.9, Radio-Now, and 92.9 that are always at the bottom. If I were to pick a Memphis station to flip 103 wouldn't be the first. Though they will probably never again be back on the top like they used to be (same goes with FM100).

The radio industry continues to change, just like the Memphis market never ceases to change. So who knows what will happen next.

I'm sure that many of you still miss the Rock 103 of old (the pre Z-103 days, and let's not even go there!*), the Rock 103 that had the license plate with the walrus logo on it, the Rock 103 that used to play Keith Sykes on a fairly regular basis...ah, I could go on. I don't live close enough to Memphis to pick up Rock 103 anymore, but it can't be as good as it once was.

(*I have an old aircheck of "Germantown Blues" being played on Z-103, so it wasn't all bad!)

That's also what happens when you play the same 200 songs on an endless loop for 25 years. their playlists have stunk for nearly 20 years now, and I guess Clear Channel likes it that way.

lol..That's funny and very true to the droves of bored rock radio listeners in this market. I think the two easiest jobs in Memphis are (1) smoking pot and making pizzas at Memphis Pizza Cafe, or (2) be a Music Director at Rock 103 or The Max.

I'll tell you what... I'm not in the business, but I'll do both their hour’s jobs right now.

Rock 103:
"Hey Jude" The Beatles
“Don’t Fear the Reaper”’ Blue Oyster Cut
“Bad to the Bone” George Thorogood
“Stairway to Heaven” Led Zeppelin
“We will rock you/we are the champions” Queen
“Magic Carpet Ride” Steppenwolf
“Hey Joe” Jimmie Hendrix
“Let it Ride” Bachman-Turner Overdrive
‘Rock of Ages” Def Leppard
“Baba O’Riley” The Who

Max:
“Money” Pink Floyd
“Legs” ZZ Top
“Black” Pearl Jam
“Addicted” Saving Abel
“Love In an Elevator” Aerosmith
“Livin’ on a Prayer” Bon Jovi
“Start Me Up” The Rolling Stones
“Here I go Again” Whitesnake
“Sex on fire” Kings of Leon”
“Look at Little Sister” Steve Ray Vaughn

Over an hour of programming and I just did their jobs in a few minutes. When was the last time you heard any of these songs and thought ‘WOW! That’s great radio”

Thank god for Sirius and Pandora or we’d be screwed with boredom in Memphis.

Where are "Freebird" and "Hotel California"?

Sure would like to hear "157 Riverside Avenue" by the Speedwagon.

The Rock 103 I remember used to play it.

Others?

But when Clear Channel has taken over, it will never be the way it used to be. Z106.7 down here in Jackson used to way better back in the day before the Evil Empire took over. Now, they duplicate the same playlist as Rock 103.

To be fair...I can hear MAX clearly up here and enjoy listening to Jarman. But damned if I can turn it on at anytime during the day and NOT hear Kid Rock. Don't get me wrong...I like Kid just fine...but it's waaaay to often to be just a coincidence.
And, usually, it's "Amen!"

I will say this but once. There is a format hole big enough to drive a truck through. A big signal Country station would kick the sh** out of Kix 106. WGKX is WAY overdue for competition. Clear Channel would be smart to take WEGR Country. That nobody has dared take on Kix since the Frog died is really amazing. It's been ELEVEN FREAKIN years already! All because corporate mucky mucks are chicken sh**!! That's my $.02 for the day.
