and what WRNO should become too.....

Bands been open lately, haven't tried on radio, but to catch KPLC and KLFY on a portable TV on the bayou was amazing recently...

Yup. It's been open BIG TIME that past couple of days.

Now, DE is a ham, and has been pretty busy working 144 MHz stuff in the opening, but, I have rolled through broadcast.

Here into Memphis, I got Channel 8 from Houston, strong, last night. This morning, Pensacola was in digital. A brief roll through FM in the car brought Dallas. I suspect San Antonio was there, too.

I got much further on ham, but I'll spare you.

BTW: This isn't "skip." This is ducting in the troposphere. True E-layer "skip" ("skip" is really an imprecise term; it's more like refraction, but let's not get too esoteric) stuff is usually a Summer thing, and almost surely what brought in Canada in 1988. Such stuff is really pretty common in-Season, if you know when to look.

The band will almost surely open back up tonight. Have at it.

I posted the same on the San Antonio board. KISS-FM/San Antonio was blasting into Houston like a local station last night.
______________

i was listening to the radio yesterday evening and i noticed a hispanic station on 103.3 coming in OVER diva 103.3 in baton rouge. the format gave it away as to where it may be coming from. as far as i can tell, it must'a been some houston or san antonio station.

then, almost every day of last week, skip was in from the east. just about every frequency on the FM dial had a station coming in on it. i'll bet the AM band was unbelievable that week, too. i was getting panama city, florida stations on frequencies that i'd normally get biloxi stations. i was also hearing mobile, hattiesburg, meridian, and jackson, mississippi stations. at one point, i was listening to a station that gave their listening area as the tampa and orlando area!
______________

Could have been a lot of things. But, my best guess is KJOJ-FM in Freeport, Tx -- a little west of Houston.

Not surprised about Tampa/Orlando. The mapping I had seen showed that blanketing the Gulf. I know someone in Pensacola that was getting Veracruz, Mexico on his car radio at ~ 900 miles. 'Quite a duct.

As far as AM is concerned, no. AM is not impacted by what was going on. This is ducting in the troposphere, not "skip." Wavelengths on AM are way too long to make that work. If you were receiving long AM, another process was at work.

Most of this is over, but Gulf tropo can last for days. If you pay attention, you might get a little more.
